  • I understand that it's a tricky decision but haven't they met like 3 times already about it? I would expect they'd reach some sort of answer by this point. That's more than enough time to say yes, no, or determine a partial hybrid sort of service. There are not many options for a response. Pick one.

SEOUL, Nov. 25 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's defense ministry stressed the need Thursday for "prudence" in considering whether to allow active-duty military service exemptions for K-pop superstar BTS and other top artists, citing the nation's shrinking population and other factors.

Boo Seung-chan, the ministry's spokesperson, made the remarks as the National Assembly has been deliberating on a revision bill aimed at allowing male artists who have contributed to national interests to work in fields of their specialty for 34 months under an alternative program that would exempt them from mandatory active-duty service.

All able-bodied South Korean men are to serve in the military for about two years. But only global award-winning athletes and classical musicians have been granted a waiver in recognition of their role in promoting their country's image abroad.

"Regarding the revision bill, the defense ministry cannot help but consider situational variables. The one that we face at this very moment is the situation caused by the shrinking population," Boo told a regular press briefing.

"Secondly, there is also a need for social consensus. In other words, this is about a fair military service," he added, stressing the need to be "prudent."

Proponents of the revision bill argue BTS members and other globally acclaimed stars should be allowed to continue to work in their cultural spheres, especially after BTS recently became the first Asian act to win artist of the year at the American Music Awards.

A subcommittee of the parliament's national defense committee, meanwhile, discussed the revision bill earlier in the day but failed to make any progress in its deliberations.

Its election time in Korea, that may also be a reason the government may be pushing it ahead and do not want to decide fast.

  • I agree with the social consensus thing so it is clear that most Korean citizens are okay (not okay) with a BTS excemption.

Having said that, BTS has brought glory, promoted Korean culture 100x over compared to those classical musicians and Sports personalities.

Understand you perfectly Seriously, this hemming and ha-ing is both agonizing and annoying. You have to make a decision, no matter what is decided, in order to move forward.

  • So not everyone is one board with this ?

Also what has shrinking population got to do with 7 men enlisting or not?

Why won’t they let them still work as a Group but as in community service, where most of their income would be donated to government aid organizations or something, like this they are serving but also still promoting their country 🤷🏽‍♀️.

  • Its election time in Korea, that may also be a reason the government may be pushing it ahead and do not want to decide fast.

I also understand this, but I'm not sure anything will be resolved even after the elections are over. I pray we get an answer soon, but I've been praying for years. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if whoever I'm praying to is like - STOP RIGHT THERE. I know what you are going to say! AMEN.

  • Its election time in Korea, that may also be a reason the government may be pushing it ahead and do not want to decide fast.

They had at least one or two prior chances to decide. I really don't understand why they're dragging their feet. If it's no, say no. Unless they plan to say yes but need to wait for the best time (when it's not an election). A yes or partial yes is the only reason to not just give a clear answer already. It makes zero sense to delay this long only to say no because no is the answer that would cause the fewest issues so if it was a no they would've said it already. That's the only logic that makes some sense to me.

  • They totally deserve an exemption... hope the decision will be made soon and everything finally will be clear

  • It's really nerve-wracking. Especially because the issue has been going on for so long. I hope that everything turns in favor of Armys and BTS and everyone is happy with what is decided for the future.

they will postpone it as long as they can

and I still believe the decision will be made by one-two higher ups behind closed doors

I mean 'order' for it will come from higher ups to this comission or jury whatever they're named

like paradis is saying, it's election time in Korea

remember that each country has different people within it's border, they will be people who will be angered if BTS is pardoned, and then they might vote for different candidate

also there is one thing that people here don't know...

but I've digged deep and apparently president candidate Lee was accused of having links with organized crime, and was involved in corruption in property development project in Gyeonggi.

as for current president Moon apparently he picked justice minister Cho Kuk, and then after month minister was forced too resign because of series of illicit business involving his wife, as well as the falsification of the academic records of his daughter.

It also doesn't help that South Korea's last two presidents are currently serving time in jail after being found guilty for corruption and bribery when they were active as presidents...

  • I'd think giving them and all other men a choice instead of mandatory would be best. Believe it or not some Korean men do want to go and maybe for BTS, instead of mandatory, maybe ask them, do they wanna go? (HYBE should not have an opinion in this)

2PM Taecyeon is very much exempted back then because he still has his US PR. Yet he chose to go and gave up his green card after seeing the almost war that happened at the borders. Because technically they are still at war with the North, it was an armistice so any side can basically just say "Hey we want those land back". I would understand the Korean men would want to go as much as the Korean men who doesn't want to go.

    Like I dunno... ask maybe?

Yours make the most sense. A simple no wouldn’t have taken this long. I’m starting to think they are seriously considering this

I think the politicians want to give them an excemption but are afraid of a citizen backlash thus the delay, so as Ripia mentioned, just have Citizens vote on it. But that's another story since it costs heaps to conduct such a consensus (especially just for a BTS military excemption which might turn some Koreans off). But then again, maybe the boys might regard military duty as r&r.

Anyways, whatever will happen will happen.

With good pay a lot of men would go anyway… I don’t know how it is in different countries, but here in Germany we also had mandatory service until 2011 for men. Now they lure them with a lot of money. I heard in America they will even pay your tuition if you want to study. Right now those in mandatory service don’t get much payment in Korea.

I don’t think the citizen backlash against bts is the delay but the criteria to define the exemption is the issue now. They are all very aware that BTS deserves it at this point but they can’t just give it out to them solely. They need to create a fair system to ensure that other acts after BTS can earn it too and also other people don’t find loopholes to take advantage of this bill :whatr:

I bet a lot of Koreans will complain if less deserving groups underqualify for this privilege

  • I don't like bts getting exception because all male should serve. But I also don't like that Korean economy has to suffer just because 7 guys go to the military.

They should perform as a military band or something like this. So they serve. But at the same time the fans still get their content and the economy don't suffer. Also the income generated of the 2 years could be used for welfare or stuff like this.
