Unpopular opinion about dancing in kpop

  • I don't think it matters a lot. I'll explain why

Obviously any given group is going to have more songs than choreography, this alone is a testament that dance talent is not essential. And then even in performances, I think being synchronised and organised, and most importantly charismatic is much more important than having outstanding dance skills. I'd rather watch a charismatic and engaging group execute an easy choreography on stage than watch a group with very technical choreographies but lacking in charisma and stage presence. Charisma alone can make and sell a performance but dance alone can't.

Besides, I think kpop is a waste of time for talented dancers because it limits their potential and freedom to showcase their skills. They'll be limited by choreographies that serve the purpose of the song, not dancing itself, and also by the skill level of their group mates. Many skilled kpop dancers only get to showcase their talent in sparse special stages and dance breaks, meanwhile the singers and rappers get to showcase their skills in every single song and every single performance.

  • I agree, though I would like a choreo, the most important thing is you perform well. I don't put pressure on whether the choreo is easy or hard.

Also notice how all the kpop dances that went viral are either very easy to follow or have catchy key points.

Roly Poly, Sorry Sorry, Gee, Genie, Gangnam Style, Nobody are forever going to be more iconic and memorable than the cardio-level choreographies most boy groups do nowadays.

  • I agree. Dancing won't be as important as singing/rapping to me (unless it's a Lisa dance break :clown: ), so using dance to evaluate a performance of SINGERS isn't a priority to me neither I will take it seriously.

It's great to dance good and to have "beautiful" choreos or hard choreos, but if the vocal/rap is lacking then i won't be satisfied with just the dance.

  • I do agree that a lot of times, point choreos are a lot more memorable and those dances are simple af which do not require high level of dance.

But, having a main dancer who really catches your attention really changes everything.

I'ma use Chaeyeon as an example. Everytime she is in the center leading the group, it just elevates the entire group dancing look better.

Like she ties everything so perfectly for the group, especially when she is in the center or when there are dance breaks

She shines at the center, but at the same time make everyone shine with her together

  • Yes it's not essential to have even anyone in a group have amazing dance skills. They just need to meet a certain minimum standard of a kpop dancer meaning they can do the moves correctly and synchronize with the rest of the group while also having the charisma when you are the center at least.

  • Very interesting !

I agree with what you said especially "Charisma alone can make and sell a performance but dance alone can't.".

    and

"Many skilled kpop dancers only get to showcase their talent in sparse special stages and dance breaks, meanwhile the singers and rappers get to showcase their skills in every single song and every single performance."

    > Yes but not really ? Its not like groups sing and rap live. Im talking about performance...dancers, rappers and singers can still do side projects on YouTube. Its very easy these days with YT

Every groups now do hardcore choreo...its so unnecessary. (And so obvious they will never be able to sing live.)

The issue is the lack of charisma.

Kpop is a stage, a performance, not a dance contest, and every groups that debuted since 2 or 3 years have difficult choreo but very little impact because they got no charisma, no stage presence, no members chemistry...

    its boring.

And that also why Lisa must be one of the best performer, if not THE best, of the world. She's a god tier dancer, and her charisma on stage is above everyone else, including some US artists. both talent + skills + charisma + killer instinct execution are required, and sadly, k-idols nowadays have skills, or maybe some skills and talent.

soooo my conclusion would be to stop debuting idols that are skilled dancer but have the charisma of a plain bread lol.

  • I’ll say choreography is the most important element of kpop. Even more than the music.

Not necessarily the difficulty level of the dance. Like how you like that is not a difficult dance but it’s soooo easy to imitate. Same with what is love that is going viral on TikTok rn. It’s cute and easy to copy.

What TikTok has shown us in even trash songs that have fun choreo that can be copied or looked at multiple times… will go viral.

Kpop was always on top of that.

  • We are living in a time where everything is made a dance challenge, but even before that fans loved to learn their faves choreography.

So choreographies are important in Kpop.

But I do agree, skilled dancers aren’t getting enough spotlight for their skills compared to the singers and rappers. So being an highly skilled dancer isn’t serving much in a Kpop Group, especially not if the other members aren’t on your level. Like you said they get limited to a choreography.

That’s why I’m happy that Lisa opened her own YouTube channel to showcase her dancing skills without limitations.

  • Yes I prefer easier but synchronized dance performances, especially if they sing live.

edit: Even if dancing skill is important, then I prefer if all members to be good. Not to the point that everyone is the main dancer but more like there are no hole in the performance.

  • But even if choreography is the most important thing in kpop, what you're saying here is another proof that being a specially skilled dancer is not necessary. What people want is a catchy easy to follow choreography, not a technical work out routine.

I don't agree that choreography is the most important thing but it's very important. I don't think it's a coincidence that kpop groups doing more and more difficult choreographies and the general public having less and less interest in kpop go hand in hand. It's not a coincidence at all. In fact, some if not most of the biggest hits in kpop history had catchy dance moves that helped them go viral. Choreographies do really help sell a song and it's so sad how kpop companies keep moving further away from that in favour of intense technical choreographies.

  • There are some SK singers and groups I like who don't dance but have good vocals and very memorable melodies. Having competent dancers is a factor for most groups. I think overemphasising dancing at the expense of everything else (the vocals, song, and melodies) is a setback for K-Pop long-term.

Dancing or charisma won't get me to like a weak song though. I'd just watch the performance..that's it.

  • Frankly I don’t care about dancing. I pay more attention to the aesthetics in a music video than a bunch of fancy footwork and some of the moves are a bit silly imo.

  • Well singing comes first but I enjoy good choreos and stages. Charismatic dancers if they also have the skills that's better. All the members in the group of course wont be at the same level. They can be dancing the same choreo but having skilled dancers in the group adds so much to the performance imo. So I think it's important for me
