Karina going viral in SK for Instagram post being linked to support Conservative Party

I could care less if one of my favorite idols was political one way or another.

I’m not surprised it’s going viral, but I feel sorry for Karina when it is obviously unintentional.

Right now in Korea, you’ll see massive posters of all the candidates plastered across the railings of every major road, with even bigger banners of them at every intersection. They are everywhere and in your face all the time.

There’s even these little trucks that drive around blasting out trot songs with lyrics about the candidates that come with teams of “dancers” that do little performances as they roam around the cities.

Everyone knows the colours and numbers of the 3 major candidates. 1 is blue, 2 is red, 4 is orange. So yeah, it’s not surprising this has gone viral. Poor Karina.

I don't know the politics there but it feels like an honest mistake. I know we don't know these idols, but based on her past actions I feel she's not a hardcore conservative like people are saying on sns.

I agree, it feels like an honest mistake that is now sadly getting used by representatives of the red party (PPP 새누리당).

Tbh, the choices Korean voters have look terrible to me. I wouldn’t vote for either of the 2 major parties.

Why people think everything is about politics?

Honestly, I hope one day we're gonna see Idols and celebs in general just stand up and say:

"Fck you all. I can do whatever I want, it wasn't political, I can wear whatever the hell I want, and it's not your business."

BTW, even if she wanted to make a political statement, who cares? She's a grown woman, she can vote, and she has every right to pick a politician who she wants to support.

This is why I hate talking about politics, btw. People only like doing it if you have the same opinion.

Depends on what kind of politics for me.

If I disagree with them on the budget spending, I don't care.

If whatever party they support actively harms others or wants to throw away democracy, it becomes a different matter.

I don't think Karina meant anything political with this, though.

Is there something big happening in Korea politically? Generally celebrities are expected to be apolitical there but they have subtle ways of showing their alliances. Wearing color coded outfits is a way of showing them. It would make sense why knetz are suddenly digging through celebrity posts to look for such signs right before an election or something. It would also make sense why she deleted the post.

I would definitely side eye celebrities supporting parties that prop up incel audiences in a country rife with divisive politics and rampant cases of molka and things like nth room, burning sun etc.

Oops the elections are next week and this is a quadruple whammy.

For the Americans apparently this is like wearing a red hat AND a jacket with an elephant on it AND THEN posting an emoji with an American flag. A week before the election.

If I understand correctly it’s not just one thing that knetz are mad about it’s the combination of multiple things the red + the number 2 and the rose emoji this being posted at the time of the election period also does not help.

The reason why a lot of Koreans think it is intentional is because she posted with a Rose emoji and it's a Rose election which seems too coincidental to be unintentional

Karina ain’t got time thinking about politics. She is constantly flying all around the world non stop without a rest. Aespa is currently in Japan for another award show or festival or smth.

Idk but it seems intentional, and not a mistake. Too many coincidences, but I think the company made her do it. I don’t think Karina is dumb enough to involve herself in politics.

Well this really blew up. Intentional or not (only she knows), Karina stepped on and triggered a political landmine. Not exactly the greatest PR, hence the swift apology and explanation. But this has become such a big story in Korea that those posts by Karina and SM are like trying to extinguish a wildfire with a water gun.

Almost too many coincidences for comfort if I'm being honest.. yikes.

And it's definitely strange that this was let through, by Karina, managers. From what I've seen, idols are very aware during election time, and if anything, will overthink their actions just to be sure they can't be seen as advocating for anyone. I've seen basic peace-sign poses cause immediate regret and back-tracking. So it's crazy somehow that post went through..

I can see the top being a mistake, but the rose? is just wild. This is right after other famous figures have been bending over backwards to avoid posting/wearing anything with blue or red. Even Twice's CB teaser got dragged into this with people making a joke saying its revenge for the martial law that messed with their CB. I get the brain fart moment over the jacket, but the rose?

I saw some tweets talking about how Karina has made no effort to hide her Catholic heritage and speculating that she is most likely conservative. If true, i would not be surprised at all to discover that she supports the PPP.

I've said this before several times, but i think it bears repeating...as someone born in Korea, what i find so fascinating is that so many international Kpop fans are so "woke" and left leaning...meanwhile, many of the idols they stan come from literal bastions of conservative power in Korea such as Taegu, Busan and the entire Eastern half of the country pretty much. And then there are plenty of Protestant and Catholic Koreans throughout the country who are also generally conservative.

It's not unreasonable at all to conclude that idols with these backgrounds would support the PPP, especially since many of them are still so young politically speaking and might still adhere to the beliefs they were raised with.

This is a non issue for me of course. Despite my antipathy toward MYs in general (due to the insane hate train they led against LSRFM on Twitter), i still adore Karina. She is HILARIOUS on camera, her personality SHINES every time i see her on a variety or Vlive, and she's a solid performer as well. I think she should be allowed to support whoever she wants and not be shamed for it.
