We don't talk enough about how the 4th Generation Girl Groups have shown up and supported each other this year

  • My biggest complaint about this era of K-Pop is that we don't get nearly enough content with different idol groups interacting and vibing with each other.

Some of my favorite content from 2nd and 3rd gen was when idols from different companies got to spend meaningful time together. I'm talking shows like Invincible Youth, Weekly Idol back during its peak popularity when it was THE show idols wanted to appear on (even GD/Big Bang appeared once) or the joint season of Showtime with Mamamoo and GFriend.

We are STARVED for this kind of content today, which is why everyone got so excited over the few crumbs of Babyjeans content we got yesterday.

BUT, I will say this. Those shows are all scripted and directed.

When it comes to today's girl groups, I want to give them their flowers for how they have very publicly supported each other and openly cheer each other on in ways I rarely saw even in the previous generations.

First, we started lighthearted with the aespajeans content, right when the biggest scandal of the year started, and it was clear both groups were on that HYBE hitlist:

Then we have both members of StayC and (G)I-DLE getting emotional while NewJeans deliver their speech after winning the daesang at the KGMAs:

And then just the other night at the MMAs, when Soyeon announced that all the members of (G)I-DLE would be renewing their contracts, look at how members of both aespa and IVE reacted during the speech:

I don't know about you all, but I thought all of this was both heartwarming and wholesome, and it shows that while K-Pop can be a cutthroat competition, especially in the girl group space, there is also a sisterhood, and they are all each other's biggest fans.

Keep that in mind next time you think our petty fanwars ever warrant attacking the idols and idol groups themselves.

  • They are uniting against the 3rd Gen assaults next year

I'll be expecting an essay from you on the upcoming war between generations next year

wait this is one of your best if not the best thread ever :holding-back-tears::holding-back-tears::holding-back-tears::crys: .

I tapped into my energy from my OH days, when I was a messenger of peace and dignity

What about illit and le sserafim

Yes. Them too. Had ILLIT been present for their ROY award last night, they would've received support. I noticed all the girl group idols did the Magnetic choreo during their video montage.

  • Yep I was thinking the same exact thing from seeing the babyjeans interactions the other day. The fact that we are so excited over them existing in the same room says it all lol. Well it was a bit more than that but I want to see more!!

I suppose it's harder for groups from different labels but like I'd literally give my right arm to see some collab or content with BP and BM. I've always wondered why the industry doesn't do more stuff like this, especially YG. Is it competition between labels? Negative fan reactions?

As for the actual topic of the thread, I was very pleased to see Babymonster openly supporting Newjeans especially in these trying times.

  • I have 0 clue lol

They could be called Stays as well for all I know actually :meme-confused:

    :meme-kek:

Well, STAYC fan tag TBD at this point

I really couldn't tell you when or why these interactions dried up to the point we're so happy with maybe 30 seconds of interaction between two groups

The competition absolutely wasn't any less fierce during previous generations, and I can especially speak to that for the third generation, but it felt like we got way more crossover content

Going back to MAMAMOO and GFRIEND, both groups were skyrocketing in popularity in 2016, and before they even did a Showtime season together, they did a joint stream together on v-live, where Mamamoo spent half the time just gushing over how cute GFriend was, especially Umji

Or that idol collaboration show i told you about yesterday? I would've never known how much of a Moonbyul fangirl OMG's Yooa was without it. That big sis/little sis dynamic was so adorable I made a whole video out of it.

Damn shame this type of content is so rare now

I love crossovers in any form of media so it really is a dam shame that it's rare. The more I learn about earlier gens the more I can understand why some older kpop stans dislike current gens lol.

  • I love seeing each one of them supporting each other

There was also another cute moment at MMA of the girls looking worry when they saw only 3 members of aespa walking to get their award

I saw the hilarious clip of Giselle flash stepping through the arena to get on stage in time for the acceptance speech, but I didn't see any clips of the other idols' reactions. I'll have to look them up

I almost forgot all about this. Mamamoo would probably die of cringe if someone showed this to them. But I love it.

And yes, they are the biggest crackheads in K-Pop history. Only Mamamoo would follow up one of the most emotional tracks of their generation, I Miss You, a beautifully arranged R&B masterpiece, with a West Coast hip hop style diss track where they roast EACH OTHER about their 1cm difference in height, aptly titled 1cm Taller Than You

You know a show you probably don't know of that I would LOVE to see return and ended way too soon?

Actually I don't remember the name, but the concept was a previous gen girl group member would be paired with a current gen girl group member and the episode would be about them building a big sis/little sis or mentor type relationship

    It was so cute

Ah, I just looked it up. It was called Secret Unnie

I NEED THIS TO COME BACK!! What a great concept. Labels need to make this stuff happen, surely there are plenty of fans begging for this type of content. I guess we are in the era of tik tok crossovers now.

This is the pro and con of idols and their labels producing most of their own content through their social media platforms, particularly YouTube.

We get a lot of carefully produced and edited content made by the groups for their fans, so the pressure to be "varietydols" is WAY less important than it used to be, but it also means we see idols on variety shows way less. And there are just way less idol programs in general.

During third generation, we kind of got the best of both worlds. Some of my favorite MMM moments are from their MMMTV series on their YT channel

at least your faves release a good amount of content!! I am subbed to NJs YT channel and they seem to release content fairly often. Monstiez have been deprived, we take anything we can get.

Good luck with that. YG has always been the worst with consistently releasing content.

I think 2NE1TV was the first group specific content I ever watched, but the problem was that there just wasn't enough of it

    Same with BLACKPINK

I can forgive long waiting periods between albums if I get lots of idol content, but YG gives you the worst of both worlds historically. Fingers crossed they move differently with BM

  • I have low confidence so far, but I will continue to hold out hope for BABYMONSTER House.

You talk about MMM friendships and forget their biggest besties RV. There is nothing bigger than MamaVelvet friendship and it's by far the most underrated friendship in the whole kpop, they always try to hide it but always give us so many crumbs every years :holding-back-tears:

I was debating whether or not to post this clip, since it doesn't exactly fit the wholesome vibes of this thread :meme-trying-not-to-laugh:

  • I think most idols know how hard is was to train and debut and having gone through similar things they understand the sacrifices they had to make and the hard work it takes to get to where they are so it would only seem natural they support one another having gone (going) through the same journey as each other

  • My view on this is that kpop is a competition but more so between the fans and fandoms, than actual groups. Idols just do their job but I've never seen them fight with each other verbally or being nasty to each other. Of course, they all want to be successfull but they don't seem to have any ill feelings towards other groups.

It's been like that in previous generations too. Idols from the same or different companies would befriend each other, hang out, probably share similar struggles since they're in the same industry. Support each other. It's sadly the fans who often pit them against each other, ot prove that their group is better.

The only time I've seen evidence of friction between top groups was with SNSD and 2NE1, particularly in 2014 when Come Back Home won over Mister Mister

I remember that, but the whole "scandal" to me was so funny ^^

I don't know if you've been or are a SNSD fan but I am and Sunny just has that resting face, when she's not on camera (and sometimes even on camera, when she's listening to someone). But non-fans wouldn't know that and it was kind of blown out of proportions. She's actually my bias, so I would know and that's why it was funny to me.

I just thought the whole narrative around it was hilarious even way back in 2014 :meme-trying-not-to-laugh:

It certainly was used as fanwar fodder, not that Sones and Blackjacks needed any extra motivation to come for each other's wigs

I will say most of the SNSD members wasted no time getting off that encore stage :meme-side-eye:
