The song is fighting tooth and nail to stay in the top 10 on Melon, even surpassing new releases. And is only 10 weeks away from being in the chart for over a year. I also shouldn't have to mention how every idol from every generation and their mothers were dancing to Hype Boy for months. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Hype Boy is easily the biggest hit of 4th gen. But is it on the same level as the generation-defining hits that came before it
Is Hype Boy a hit on the level of Tell Me/ Cheer Up/ Gee?

its a weird position for a song bc those songs change careers for those respective ggs (twice being called flop bc loa debut, drop then rise thru promo, wg losing hyuna and irony didnt doing as well, itnw did well but gee its ust other level even for them)
I dont think hype boy did that for nj as they debut straight with a lot of hype, whatever song could have done that bc attention and their other songs have chart well too

i’m licherally gobsmacked that you aren’t passively aware of Tell Me by the Wonder Girls who got to tour with the Jonas Brother’s internationally?!?!?!?!?!?!?
-
-
In Korea?
I think it depends how you look at it. Tell me and gee are different kind of hits. These 2 songs definitely defined one whole generation and they are hits 15 years later and that's what makes them different and outstanding.
Hype boy is imo definitely on its way to be just as big of a hot as these song and maybe even bigger. Will we still mention Hybe boy 15+ years in future?
ProbablyWe also can't compare how many weeks songs that were released almost two decades ago spent on charts vs Hype boy. We are talking about completely different metrics.
So I don't think there is point in comparing them.
Globally? Hybe boy cleared.

Of course I know Wonder Girls but just I only know Nobody, because it was everywhere back in the day (kinda like Cupid now). And Sunmi from Wonder Girls. But yeah never knew any other things about them. Tell Me kinda has T-ara’s Rolly Pollie vibe. Cute.

Hype boy definitely spent more weeks as no1 on melon and more weeks in top 10 compared to gee and tell me.
Comparing Melon charts in 2009 and 2022/23 is.. interesting

Yes.

I was using the melon chart to show Hype Boy's longstanding popularity with the general public which shows that it is domestically the biggest hit of 4th gen. Like how Gee was the biggest hit of 2nd gen, with Tell Me not falling far behind, and how Cheer Up is the biggest hit of 3rd gen(at least domestically.)

Oh I see!

ofc it is

It's completely deserved too. The song is almost a year old and I'm not remotely tired of it yet. Still the most viral song in Korea and got a second life from recently becoming a meme

it's a bop

Hybe Boy has destroyed every other song in terms of longevity. Like it's sick. Love Dive, Dynamite, Spring Day, none of those could even dream about going 45-50 weeks in the top 10 of Melon.
However.
It's peak UL count was only 450k. That's less than Love Dive 470k, and miles behind Dynamite's 708k. Also it never once got #1 on Melon Daily/Weekly. And i'm not sure it topped any of the daily/weekly charts in Korea, not even Bugs? I know fans wanna claim that it was blocked by Attention but that's not true. Attention lost the #1 spot after a few weeks, which meant that Hybe Boy couldve taken over, but it was actually blocked by Afterlike and was also behind Pink Venom for some of August/Sept.
After Love Dive was blocked for months by Bigbang, Tomboy, and Psy in April/May of last year, it still managed to remain relevant enough to earn #1 on Melon Weekly two months after it was released, showing incredible longevity and GP popularity. Yet Hybe Boy was unable to do that.

Anyways, I feel like the biggest hit is still Next Level?
But Hype Boy is definitely up there as one of the biggest 4th gen hits no question

Hype Boy was not #1 because NJ blocked themselves

#1 spot is a relative ranking. So it carries less weight actually. The total digital index ans cumulative ULs should be paid more attention to.
Melon Uls for comparison
Hype boy current UL is 3.9mil
Attention 3.6mil
Love Dive 4.1mil
Next Level 4.6mil
Tomboy 4mil
I think safe to say Hype Boy is quite up there. It will likely be their song with the most ULs on Melon and has chance to surpass Love Dive & Next Level
