HyunA

  • I. Introduction

HyunA is a South Korean soloist who first debuted as a member of the JYP girl group Wonder Girls in 2007, but left after the release of the group's debut single album, "The Wonder Begins", over reasons concerning her health. However, she re-debuted with the Cube Entertainment girl group 4Minute in 2009, a group that she'd be a part of until its 2016 disbandment; during her time with Cube Entertainment, she was also a part of the units Trouble Maker (with Hyunseung of B2ST/Highlight) and Triple H (with E'Dawn and Hui of Pentagon), and also managed to make her solo debut in 2010 with the single "Change". She left Cube Entertainment in 2018 after she was caught dating with Pentagon's E'Dawn - despite this, she signed a solo contract with P-Nation in 2019 and has stayed there for her solo promotions ever since.

    II. Solo Career

On January 4, 2010, HyunA released "Change" her first solo single. The single was a commercial success debuting at #2 on the Gaon Digital Chart. In 2011, HyunA released her first mini-album Bubble Pop with a lead single of the same name. The song peaked at #4 on the Gaon Digital Chart and the music video gained one million views in two days on YouTube. "Bubble Pop" would go on to become a worldwide smash and became the first K-Pop music video to break 100 million views on YouTube. That same year HyunA was named one of Billboard's "21 Under 21" and "Bubble Pop" landed in ninth place on Spin magazine's best songs of the year.

In 2012, HyunA was personally chosen to appear in Psy's "Gangnam Style" music video. "Gagnam Style" drew worldwide attention to HyunA and Psy later released "Oppa is Just My Style" a female take on "Gangnam Style" with vocals by HyunA. On October 21, HyunA released her second mini album Melting with the title track "Ice Cream". The video featured a cameo from Psy and became an instant success, becoming the fast Korean music video to reach 20 million views.

On July 28, 2014 HyunA released her third mini album, A Talk, with the lead single Red. A Talk peaked at #3 on the Gaon Album Chart and Rolling Stone named "Red" one of the best music videos of 2014. HyunA released her fifth mini album A'wesome on August 1, 2016 with lead single "How's This?". A'wesome debuted at #2 on the Gaon Album Chart and that fall she embarked on her first solo Asian tour. For her tenth anniversary, HyunA held a series of fan meetings in North America. On December 2, 2017, HyunA debuted her single "Lip & Hip" at the 2017 Melon Music Awards. The song was officially released two days later and peaked at #14 on the Gaon Album Chart.

On October 15, 2018, Cube announced HyunA's departure from the company. In January 2019, it was announced that HyunA would be joining P Nation and on November 5, 2019 she released the single "Flower Shower" which debuted at #6 on the Billboard World Digital Sales chart. On January 28, 2021 HyunA released her seventh EP "I'm Not Cool" with a title track of the same name.
