Do you need to love and support all the members pretty equally to be a true stan?

  • It's so weird to me when I see stans call out people in their fandom for not supporting all the members enough. Like, when did kpop become a job? I get not wanting toxic akgaes in your fandom, but it's natural to gravitate more towards certain members. I'm gonna give all the members a chance, but I'm not listening/ streaming an album that I don't like. Just coz i didn't vibe with so and so's song, doesn't make me not worthy of the fandom.

At least that's the way I see it. What do you think? And have you ever been called out for not being enough of a fan?

  • I think it depends, but you don't need to like support all solo activities. You might not vibe with them the way you do with group activities.

  • I mean, theres a reason kpop fans have developed the concept of biases. There’s almost always going to be a member or two that you concentrate on a little more than the others, and that’s not a bad thing in my opinion. I’d be hypocritical if thought like that, because everyone can clearly see I have a strong bias in one of my ult groups lol.

I think it’s a good practice to not completely concentrate on only one member though, because you are supporting a full group after all.

However, I don’t like the idea of only stanning one member of a group (not as a bias) when they are functioning as a multi-person act with no other solo careers from the members, and giving zero support whatsoever to the other members.

Speaking of solo careers, if multiple artists who were previously in a group together go solo and somebody only wants to follow their bias’s solo career or the member they like the solo music of the most, there’s not a problem with that, their solos would be functioning as separate units and not as a group anyways.

  • not sure if thats possible

even parents dont ever treat their kids equally no matter how hard they try

  • I don't think you need to really love all the members equally or even in the same way (I mean we all have ults and bias), don't even need to support all of the members the same... BUT you do need to have respect for all the members to be a stan. Hate it when I see someone who is a fan of one of the same groups as me and they send love for one or a couple of members, but in the same breath send hate to the others. As a BP stan I see it all the time.

Also I think a lot of people have different definitons of what it means to be a stan.

  • I don't want to be a true stan if I have to do that. I don't even love and support my family members equally. I must not be a true family member to them.

    ^^this exactly

And it gets even more out of hand when they put the member ahead of the group like “group x is hindering their solo abilities” when the reason a solo is even on the table is because they’re in group x and the reason you even knew they existed was because of group x.

I don't think so. I like Twice but I find half the members irritating. I just plane don't like Nayeon and Momo. I've never understood why JYP thinks Nayeon is some kind of goddess. I used to dislike Dahyun but then I saw

and fell head over heals in love.

Not immediately liking everyone makes for room to grow and wonderful discoveries

  • there's nothing wrong with having favorites or supporting one member's solo and not another's 🤷🏻‍♀️

idk about actively disliking a member though to the point where you put them down or go out of your way to say like "i love and support all these members except for YOU :cursing:"

i don't think i could ever stan a group if i didn't have positive feelings towards everyone in it, even if i didn't necessarily stream/buy/watch all of their activities outside of the group

although i'd probably do that for twice ngl, even for my not favorite members

I love questions like this, although my take might be a bit different. I think people all have their different standards in their minds about what it takes to truly be a 'good' fan'.

For me however as I have stated many times, I don't mind solo stans, and yes sometimes I do solo stan myself. BUT you have to respect your fav, respect their group members and their hard work. It takes so much to be a idol, you can at least respect how hard they have worked to get their dream job. That's all anyone can really ask for tbh.

I don't understand why fans have to listen or streams the songs they don't enjoy, everyone has different music tastes after all.

+ Yes I have been called out before which is why I left twitter mid 2018 almost 2019 after following BTS and EXO from 2017. I wasn't 'good enough', and focused to much on ATEEZ, BlockB, BLACK6IX or a Chinese survival show on my Union Fanbase account. Basically the fan account I ran gave support to its followers, updating them on the times to vote for the idol they wanted to make to the next round, sharing clips from the show and daily reminders to send in letters to the trainees on the show that they supported so their letters could be read.

However, before I deleted both twitter accounts, many have apologized in the fandoms and have assured to do what was comfortable for me and that not everyone as a ATINY, EXOL or ARMY was like that, and honestly they were some of the nicest apologies I ever gotten. I'm still grateful that even some wrote me privately.

I love Apink, I know I hide it well, but I hate CopyCat... The music video was funny and creative but just didn't work. Never like something just because, it actually causes harm to a group because they can think they did something right and keep doing it when after a while your simply not going to be able to fake it any more. Then they are stuck in a concept no one likes.

  • No, I don't believe so. Just because you don't vibe with some of the members don't mean you aren't supporting them or don't love a group. Hell I'll be the FIRST to admit as a diehard Honey10 I cannot stand Wooseok's solo music. Aside from his first album, i can't stand his stuff. Not even the b-sides. Bring him back to up10tion, he's the "visual" of the group but I don't see it. Does that mean I hate up10tion? Nah, it just means I don't vibe with him. But when He's WITH the group I feel he fits in, and he's perfect.

I only collect WooSan (Wooyoung and San) in Ateez (occasionally Yeosang), it doesnt mean i dislike the other members I just don't want to collect them. But I still buy every album and such.

I don't think you're any less of a fan/stan just because you only like a couple members.

  • It’s impossible for me to stan a group if I dislike a member but I never love the members equally. I am a music lover so I check all the members solo music but I don’t listen to it if I don’t like it. I ignore what I don’t like just like I don’t care about the group music that is not my taste.
