Was it a mistake to send NewJeans to the collabo when it , out of the 5 groups featured, was not given the Favorite New Artist Award? - Yes it was.

  • The tale of 2PM and 2AM are well known.

JYP fitted 2PM and 2AM against each other. He himself led 2PM, while Bang Sihyuk, better known Hitman Bang and later the boss of BTS, led 2AM.

2PM did better in the overseas, and while 2AM was a contender against SNSD in K-O-R-E-A, eventually SNSD overcame it and its position in K-O-R-E-A as the premier vocal act in there was overtaken by the person on the left of this post(I promise I won't mention her name on this post), who did defeat SNSD in late 2011, and after that 2AM fell into oblivion.

    ======

You can say what you want about how successful NewJeans was this year.

However, I have expressed concern that its popularity in K-O-R-E-A might hurt them.

Min Heejin, who developed NewJeans and Red Velvet before, is a witness of Red Velvet being grouped together with GFriend, whose ex-owner is now nominally responsible for Le Sserafim (although he holds little actual influence on how LS is run; LS is directly run by Hybe).

So it is basically a continuation of the fight 2016.

NewJeans collaborated with IVE, NMixx, Kep1er and ... Le Sserafim.

And the latter four received the Favorite New Artist Award while NewJeans didn't get anything.

This MAMA was given in Japan where LeSserafim, because of its popularity in there, has a huge advantage.

And NewJeans showed their disadvantage against LS and other acts by being grouped with them while not winning an award. Whatever they might win tomorrow does not matter because they were, well, not considered to be up to speed with the other 4 acts.

I think Min Heejin might have made a mistake by putting NJ to there with the other 4 acts who won something, although it might not be her who made the decision. Being classed with them is something, and being shown to be not of the same level as the other 4 who were in the same level was, I would say, quite painful.

Already some Bunnies are afraid that LS would overtake NJ in the overseas, where the money is. LS's superiority in Japan, due to its 2 Japanese members (1 quite known) 1 IZOne member and 1 PD48 contender, is hard to assail in there; NJ has to make it up from its popularity in other countries, and its great success in K-O-R-E-A, which doesn't really mean anything as far as revenue is concerned, might hold it there and not being able to compete against LS in the overseas.

  • New Jeans is hindered by their concept. Danielle and Hanni do have international appeal potential though. HYBE made a mistake in debuting both girl groups within a short amount of time because the number of fans were impacted by strong GG performances in general and HYBE Stans being stretched thin. If HYBE tries to push both groups in the west then it will impact the groups because they are compete for the same fans. NJ will continue to do well in SK but their concept is not going to be welcomed in the US. Being cute is not valued in the US. It’s in fact kinda off putting coming from anyone who isn’t a baby or under the age of 12.

It is likely that LS will concentrate in Japan while NJ will be promoted to the world. However, if LS has enough popularity in Japan it will jump into the ring and compete with NJ in the rest of the world as well.

NJ will have to reinvent itself if it wants go anywhere in the rest of the world . Ironically aespa is on that stage, shunning K-O-R-E-A and transforming itself to be more appealing to the rest of the world. Min Heejin will have to shake her trauma from RV and learn to ignore K-O-R-E-A since it is a very insignificant market.

  • The award the other 4 got was just a general award. if newjeans gets any major main important awards (aka ROTY) tomorrow that would mean they are better than the 4 groups they collaborated with in comparison. therefore by your logic LSF and all the other rookie groups will be “not up to speed” with New jeans?

If that’s the case then MHJ is a genius.

  • Then NewJeans should not have collaborated with them.

Being there made it compared with other acts

I know it’s hard but in life not everyone can get a gold star for something. I’m glad newjeans joined the collab even though they don’t win anything. I rather this than having acts not attending just because they are not getting any award.

Time for kpop to grow up

  • I'm confused. You mention that NJ's success in Korea doesn't mean anything as far as revenue is concerned. Yet it also means they start bagging a large amount of endorsements and commercials in Korea, which is a TON of money and can lead to other opportunities like acting. So that doesn't really make that much sense. The girls will end up rich, booked, and busy anyways lol

  • I don't like acts to be limited by their owner/producer's strange philosophy. For example, Yang Hyunsuk's strange philosophy limited BlackPink significantly, making it overshadowed by IU , who owned herself at that time which mattered the most.

but they Newjeans are still considered big in this year right?

just like even Blackpink got limited by YG, they are still considered big names along with IU

so it doesn't matter that much?

It is the perception which does matter. If you and 4 others stand in one event and only you didn't get recognized, wouldn't you be upset, especially when the whole world is watching?

Unfortunately, any endorsement and commercial which can come from K-O-R-E-A is minuscule compared to what could be earned in the world.

A ton of money ? IU , who achieved the ultimate on such things, made about $23 million on 2021. Which is the maximum a female act, soloist or group, can make in K-O-R-E-A. She was the owner of her company at that time so she kept most of it, but comparable acts which made that much would still have to pay their companies

An internationally big act virtually has no limit at all on earnings

LeSserafim will rake money from Japan NJ has to carve a niche as big as what LS will carve up in Japan in order to stay in the game.

perception is important but i don't know why yours should be taken as fact. an equally valid take is "I've been invited to this stage despite existing for half as long and not even having a CB yet"

i'd feel stoked to have that kind of impact

This perception only mattered because MAMA was split into 2 days. If it was combined in one day and the other 4 girl groups got the favorite award and new jeans didn’t but they got a bigger award then you wouldn’t be kicking up a fuss. Why aren’t you waiting until the very end to see if this perception of them being snubbed is even valid.

The fact is, all award shows are about bagging the official awards which is why you haven’t heard any of the fans being salty or even bragging about this favorite artist award because it’s basically a participation award.

New jeans hype boy just went up the charts again and they’re going viral for their visuals and participation from MAMA so regardless it gives them exposure, new fans and experience and that’s great. New jeans haven’t even had a comeback yet so we don’t know if their concepts will grow and what market they will do best in. there is nothing wrong with building a solid fan base in Korea first. It’s KPOP not jpop or international pop like chill.

  • giving the best new favorite artist to NMIXX and Kep1er must be the biggest jokes ever

at least for Kep1er i can understand they came from a Mnet show so it was sure they would receive it

but Nmixx ?????? and Not Newjeans ?

that award was only given to rookie groups passing 1m sales this year. nj is 4 months old and has released only 1 mini album (unlike the rest of these new ggs who all had 2 or more releases) so obviously nj haven’t passed 1m sales yet and don’t get the award. It’s not that deep lol

One can only win a rookie award once in an act's life

NJ starts its career in a heavy disadvantage as other acts will begin to look down on it

And in the end NJ got nothing

MAMA decided whatever NJ did was not worth recognizing, although it did award NJ's producer.

NJ now belongs to a different class from IVE, Le Sserafim, Kep1er and NMixx.

  • WhyKnock

Changed the title of the thread from “Was it a mistake to send NewJeans to the collabo when it , out of the 5 groups featured, was not given the Favorite New Artist Award?” to “Was it a mistake to send NewJeans to the collabo when it , out of the 5 groups featured, was not given the Favorite New Artist Award? - Yes it was.”.
  • It's interesting - this concept that groups/artists don't attend shows because they didn't get an award came up in the watch party, which is essentially what you're saying - that they shouldn't have done the collabo if they weren't going to get a made-up award which :pepe-cringe:

Basically they were shown the door and the other acts will eternally feel superior to NJ as long as they exist.

  • so whos winning, 2pm or 2am??
