People only remember peak, not longevity

I mostly agree. Longevity is important only up to a point...nobody cares if your song managed to stay in the top 100 for 29 years or whatever, especially now that the UL counts are so low that giant fandoms can easily skew results. I mean the only people streaming the song at that point are your fans.
I would say peak plus longevity in the top 10 of Melon are the best indicators. The first shows public interest, the second shows public acceptance.

True lol

I don’t agree. Michael Jackson’s comeback in 2001 has several songs that are classics. You Rock My World & Butterflies still get heavy play & both still get radio play to this day.
Longevity is very important. It’s how we separate the legends and icons from the people that were just short-lived stars. Michael Jackson is more than Thriller and Bad. He has several classic songs from Jackson 5, as a solo star as a kid, from Off the Wall (his first album) & the other albums post- Bad (Black or White, Remember The Time, You Are Not Alone)

but since we're talking kpop everyone should know or already do know that Spring Day is still charting in melon to this day

Said peak usually births longevity tho 👀

& Billie Jean is actually his best performing song on any given day nowadays except Halloween lol
The song is also on thriller so I assume op is referring to whole era/album but yeah billie jean is arguably the biggest pop song ever

I heard u unstaned BP
Isn't it time to update that username perhaps finally adopt the widely used TwiceHouse?
-
longevity matters to the artist's fandom
I want my faves to keep making music for a long time
-
It fits all the criteria u mention for a peak hit song but u still used to write paragraphs about why it isn't big 😂
-
Bad example. MJ is MUCH MORE than just thriller and bad. Billie Jean, beat it, Heal the world, Smooth criminal, black or white, you're not alone, i can go on and on with the list. MJ is legendary and still being remembered till this day, definitely not because of those 2 songs only (the peak u described)
And NO. For example, Katy Perry hit big during Teenage dream with 5 #1 singles and multiple top 10. But, who cares about her nowadays? If u say peak is all that matter - why she is being forgotten now? Even Lady gaga which flopped earlier than her have revitalised her career with a Star is Born

Katy discography still pulls streams tho & teenage dream is still charting on billboard 200 till this day 👀

Look at Backstreet Boys. They have been going for 25 years and they are remembered for I Want It That Way. Katy Perry is still active and single so she's gonna still be pumping out hits.
-
Yeah, there is a tendancy for that to happen. What would you call that? "Limited bandwidth"?
I had to look that up. "Invicible" was another catalog quality album but it was intentionally overshadowed by media controversy.
If that didn't happen and Michael was able to do the world tour that was planned, this part of Pop "History" would be different.
"You Rock My World" and "Butterflies" were def. shown L-UV in my local area. When your stuff is catalog, it still gets played, even occasionally, on public radio.
The combo of his gifts, skills, vision and longevity added up to an incredible amount of musical influence..like DECADES worth! Still lots of things worth studying in many areas when it comes to this guy. No doubt this man had a high level of performance discipline and mastery in his music.

The difference is Backstreet Boys struggles with creativity and a different music landscape. That's not really an issue for Katy.

She is suffering the same a lot of artist go through, insanely high peaks that overshadow your more recent works. Katy perry is one of those cases, though her new stuff is not hard flopping but obviously past the glory days.
Few artists can put out hit albums over a decade after debut. I can only think of eminem rn lol

Be like Mariah Carey sunbaenim, she peak over everyone every christmas, and have longevity because it happens every year

Oh no, you got the wrong song. I've always given Dyna credit for success, even though the song is terrible. It's Spring Day that is nowhere near what Army thinks of it lol. Never hit #1 on Melon and only spent FOUR weeks in top 10 of Melon. At least it's a better song than Dyna though lol.

Spring Day is the epitome of longevity and well loved song. The value of the song is way more than being number 1 on Melon or what ever charts. And really, if only ARMY purposely keep Spring Day afloat, won’t it makes more sense for us to let the hit songs like Blood Sweat and Tears etc instead of the low key Spring Day?
Apparently it got you annoyed so that more than enough for me lol

The chart abuse was already done when the charts changed to 24 hits in 2020 from that horrible real time chart for years but I don't expect a person of your level of intelligence to understand it.

Yeah, kinda true
-
They're not even trying to be subtle
-
Doesnt have to be organized. I think SD has become a cult classic among Army, they genuinely love it.
