[enter-talk] IT'S TRUE THAT NING NING DOESN'T BOW

  • t/n: some times ago, there was a huge controversy over a Chinese member from a girl group who refused to bow when everyone was bowing. Knets take it as Chinese people's mockery of Korean culture

Seeing how Chinese are the only people acting like that, it shows that they have no respect towards other cultures are aren't planning to learn. That's why all they do is steal

People here claim this platform isn't pitting women against women, however, the Jjanggae (t/n: derogatory term for Chinese people) male idols have done way worse than her, as far as to speak on Sinocentrism 3 times more often than her, but Ning Ning's articles reach 1000 upvotes every week on average, meanwhile people are telling us to stop bashing male idols ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ You guys claim that we need to hate on all Jjanggae idols? But it's obvious that you only bash on female idols though? Even for COVID, you guys only hate on BP, Jang Wonyoung, Lia, Aespa, etc. who are female idols but when male idols are the ones catching COVID, you're cheering on them wishing them to get better. And here with Sinocentrism, you guys are jumping on female idols first againㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ So this platform is not pitting women against women, but is at the forefront of women's right where women support women right?ㅋㅋㅋ

If they can't understand the culture of respect in Korea, why come here and promote as an idol? Don't they hate doing stuff like that too? They're the ones who cry about how hard it is to promote in Korea, so the fans are at fault? It's you're own greed

    4. [+321, -2]
You want to promote in Korea and earn money... But you hate to respect our culture

    5. [+252, -1]
Ughㅋㅋㅋ F*ck even when they can read the room, they refuse to do it. Seiously this is the specialty of Jjanggaes

  • well this is that one small thing which is hard for me to understand

    it was same with Yiren

for god's sake you are for some years in foreign country, can't you just bow this one time?

or is it double edged sword and you might be cancelled in China?

at this point agencies should just pull Chinese members from participating in new year/holiday lives etc.

  • Bowing is usually reserved for really deep stuff.

Deep sh!t (ex: A Chairman of the board outed for corruption scandal, bows as part of a formal apology before hauling to prison, Doctors cannot save a patient, bows out of guilt.)

Deep respect (ex: VIP is in the same room, stand and bow. Ceremony honoring parents, Stand and bow. National monuments, bow. Religious shrine, bow.)

Granted the traditions grant a little more leeway in this because of modern globalism but bowing in china is serious stuff.

(As a personal side note I used to have this shallow bow +nod combo just randomly but then I never heard the end of it when I did that to my family in china; It was too formal, my uncles, aunts never let me hear the end of it of that if I were to do it to strangers, they might take it as an opportunity to boss me around as a subordinate etc. & etc. Although most of it was joking around, there are grounds in culture for it.)

  • Any reason why the Chinese people don't bow? Is it seen as something as derogatory? :whatb:

Something like that. Bowing holds much higher significance in chinese culture -- its a lot more derogatory to be forced to bow randomly because its reserved for things like funerals, bowing to monuments, or High VIPs like parents or high ranking officials of a company or government.

  • no? why would you throw away your values and principles to please someone else

They bow but not 90 degrees. In Chinese culture you only 'Kowtow' to Emperiors, superiors and the elderly. The term was adopted in Western politics to describe the act of surrendering to your adversaries:

Comrade Yiren rejected the idea of kowtowing to her peasants:

Chinese netizens are allegedly 'praising' EVERGLOW's Yiren for not following the Korean way of bowing to loved ones in the New Year | allkpop

  • I will never hate something more than generalizing people because of their culture or country, empathy should be teached on East Asia instead of giving a false sense of respect through traditions.

  • If bowing was meaningless for ning ning, then I would agree she should bow in respect for korean culture but its not meaningless for her, it means something different and I think korea should respect that too. You can't demand people to respect their culture and not respect theirs back. I think there should be some compromise, like chinese idols not appearing in these events or at least stand quietly on the side or in some other position.

  • no? why would you throw away your values and principles to please someone else

then if you would go to funeral in Korea would you also not bow down?

  • I think it's unfair for them to impose this on Ningning, who is from another culture. Netizens should respect Ningning's culture as well. Perhaps she finds bowing 90 degrees awkward and too obedient. She may not want to practice a greeting and culture that she does not feel. I understand that netizens are angry, they think their own culture is very superior, probably like every other country people, but I am personally against such nationalism.

at least vow 45 degrees then? I believe that when in Rome do as the Romans do as long as it's not hurting anyone. It's just basic respect and trying to assimilate to the culture of the country you reside in. If one can't do that then, go home Ig?

This is generalising too. Even in the country I reside in, the people expect new migrants or residents to respect their culture and traditions.

  • I think that you can assimilate to your surroundings without totally abandoning your culture.

I think it's presumptuous to think someone should have to conform 100% just to live in a country if it is not a life or death situation. I don't know if not bowing is considered disrespectful in Korean culture, but if it is, I think the solution would be to try to find a good middle ground rather than trying to force someone to go against how they were raised if it is something harmless. That's what it means to live in this multicultural world.

This, of course, is coming from someone in the US, which is a melting pot. Unfortunately, not everyone believes in that. Probably shouldn't be surprised in countries like east Asia where homogeny and conformity reign supreme.

  • I just google ningning bowing or aespa bowing and I got this

so what's the problem here? i never see this bowing problem/complaint until all this chinese cultural war started lately.

It seem she doesnt have a problem bowing, but she just not doing the whole having your head hit the ground thing. Wikipedia said that they only do that now to god or to the deceased. Maybe that's why she resist on doing that since her fans are alive, not dead.

  • Maybe, just maybe she has a reason for not doing so?

In my culture, we don't have bowing.

But we do have a saying, don't bow unless you have a sword over your neck.

Then your neck won't be cut.

But if we are to look at olden times, Qing dinasty did rule Joseon at on time or another.

So for them to bow 90 degrees to them might seem demeaning.

But also for Koreans now it would seem as offending since they are ahead of China culturally.

I think that China and SK should mend fences. But that is too hard because of the whole THAAD and NK issues.

    Meh, politics sucks bad...

  • This is generalising too. Even in the country I reside in, the people expect new migrants or residents to respect their culture and traditions.

I think it's fair to expect new migrants to respect the culture of the country, however people should realize this is not an easy process, migrants are raised on different cultures so even their values might as well be different, I think teaching about the culture to migrants is important to integrate them on the society.

However, on these kind of cases where East Asia has created this culture of "idols that can not do any wrong" is deshumanizing, and putting such unrealistic standards can't be good for mental health. Well, now add to that political tensions that make people on Internet become xenophobic af, and they will nitpick anything to hate on you.

I'm aware people in general all over the world should have more empathy, but I'm making this case mainly about East Asia because of their treatment to idols and the amount of bandwagon hate that such simple things (or even fake things) can create. Korean, Chinese and Japanese nets are so toxic between each other it's insane, you can get hate from anywhere around the world sure but when these netizens choose a target they really won't stop and they'll bully celebrities until they get tired or something terrible happens.

They found 2 gif. This 1 here is kinda dodgy. Usually, these knets are ruthless. Only 2 gif, what about other occasions show she was bowling? They witch hunt her ATM.

Oh they definitely did. The first gif is just from a Christmas video where 99% of the other people in the video (including at least 20 Korean born idols) also didn't bow. Most of them just waved.

I've never seen the video from the second gif, but it seems like Winter's birthday? Why would she bow when it's not even her birthday??

  • Funny I left this thread and started watching a random video then I saw Ningning respectfully greeting staff by bowing behind scenes. She doesn't have to kneel or deep bow stepping on her beliefs to show respect. These netizens want to vilify her so much but she will always turn out the better person.
