What matters more to you when checking out a song, the music or the lyrics? When you think about your favorite songs, were you more attracted to the sound or vibe of the song or the meaning of the lyrics? Do you have any faves where one is great but the other is only so so?
Music or lyrics?

Yes, I like Twice.
-
swifties don't have to choose
-
Definitely music but sometimes lyrics are throwing me off especially English lyrics
-
I very seldomly read what the lyrics are or pay close attention to them, so yeah music lol
-
If it's pop, the singing. If it's rock or metal, the music.
-
Music
-
Stray Kids give me both
Honestly both of them matter? Even if a song is ok, if the lyrics annoy me too much, I won't listen to it. Conversely even if the lyrics are good but I don't like the music, I also won't force myself.
-
Music first for K-Pop as I don't understand Korean and have to look up the lyrics.
I find myself being attracted to the melody and rhythm first then if I really like the song I'll look up the lyrics later on.
-
music ofcourse but good lyrics does help
-
-
-
Music will always trump lyrics. Just like music will always trump literature. Suck it, books.
-
bruh have you SEEN the lyrics of some khh songs?? music lmaooo most lyrics aint it AT ALL
THROWBACK TO JAY PARK'S ENGLISH EP
"HAIR IN THE FRONT. IT BANGS IT BANGS. THIS SHIT WILLIAM HUNG BECAUSE IT BANGS IT BANGS"
-
Both
-
The lyrics even if I can't understand them. Good songwriting should be like a story and should flow throughout a song. It should also make sense imo.
-
Music for sure. Even if songs are in English I sometimes can't understand the lyrics. But if they're bad and distract me from the song then it's a nope.
-
Everyone who says lyrics is lying
Unless ofc they’re Korean or have interest in learning the Korean language.
So that’s the vast majority of people.
-
music first, then lyrics. bad beat and melody can break a song while lyrics you could just tune it out. unless its really bad.
-
I decided long ago that lyrics were not a factor to like a song, I can't read Korean and translations can be a total miss sometimes. So I focus on the music and the singing.
-
I basically never read translated lyrics for songs not in English. It's usually not really important unless I hear something in the song that makes me go like "what the hell does this mean in context?". It's a good bonus when a song has lyrics that I like, though that's basically only in songs sung in English. Music is a far more important factor for me.
-
-
Music then lyrics, because I don't access the full meaning and for the bsides not the meaning on the first listen (as a non Korean speaker).
I can enjoy a song more for only one of them but I do prefer when I enjoy the combination, how it goes well or contrasts with each other
-
I care about the lyrics up to a point, but first I look at the music. Not everyone can write poetic lyrics anyway, most pop songs don't have to be very meaningful. It's enough if it's entertaining, but if its lyrics sounds to me weird, it affects my listening.
-
If I was forced to choose, I like a well produced song.
-
I'm not going to listen to bad music because it has good lyrics, but I'm on a kpop forum so clearly I will listen to bad lyrics if they're sung over good music.
Ideally though, they should be inseparable halves of a whole.
For example Stray Kids' Chronosaurus or Domino, where the music is a representation of the lyrical idea and the lyrics seem to describe what the music represents and it's impossible to discern which came first.
-
music > lyrics
"Anything too stupid to be said is sung."
- voltaire
-
music first then lyrics
-
-
sometimes the lyrics throw me off a song lol
-
zero o' clock's lyrics are so pretty and resonate so much with me
the song was released at the right time for me
-
one song whose melody is nice is the park hyo shin adult ceremony song, but its lyrics
-
-
Music then vocals/rap (there can be well produced catchy song but if the vocals/rap are bad i can't enjoy, or also if the autotune/vocal processing is really used bad there so for that I just listen the demo/instrumental or covers) then lyrics (I need to know what they are singing about since in the end it is art and it should express something)
-
I can't listen to a song that contains lyrics that make me cringe everytime whether or not it has the best music or sung by the best singer. If I don't understand the lyrics then ok but I hate kpop song that contains nonsense or just cringy english parts. I am not going to listen to a song with bad music either whether they contain bad or great lyrics either.
-
If its a really good song you can get away with bad lyrics, but if it's an ok song, bad lyrics can ruin it. So overall music I think is more important. I also think execution matters too, cause a lot of songs I like with awkward lyrics are able to hide it well because of how they sing them.

Music/Sound

Music.
If the music is good I will enjoy whether the lyrics are good or not. Good lyrics are a bonus though. Especially for the ballads.
If the music is not good lyrics can't save it
-
sometimes the lyrics throw me off a song lol
I really liked one of Jay Park's Korean songs but then read the translated lyrics and decided to never know what he's saying ever again. Now whenever he sings in English, I'm like NOPE
-
I don't know Korean, so automatically it's music.
Luckily, Stray Kids give me both and SVT goes hard with their lyrics in many songs!
Also, even though people like to bring RDD and dibidibidis as a meme when people talk about SHINee's lyrics, they do have some lyrically masterpieces.
