I don’t get why sm are pushing aespa in the west?

  • Americans will and never gonna get the hype of savage. They rather listen to the feels than I’m a savage zuzzuzu shitsu

And they even not in top 5 of Spotify streams so how just stay in asia girlies and ask sm for a better lyrics than I’m a savage then go to any show in america their song lyrics is so embarrassing

  • Their album debuted at #20 on billboard. I think they'll be fine. :pepepizza:

If they don't get successful in America, I'll live. They should be focusing more on Korea at this stage anyways...

  • nah, there no problem wanting to promote in the states regardless whatever song that is

It depends on what type of promo they are doing which I think SM making the same mistakes just like in the past (putting them in whatever shows as long as they have slots available) instead of making sensible

option like sending them to traditional radio show with live vocal >>>

Hopefully they doing better plans for us promo next year...

  • Not everything is about becoming the biggest act. If you can find a niche of people who enjoy your music, you stand to gain a lot of profit, especially in a music market as big as America.

Well for SM it seems like an obsession they've been pushing their artists to the west since Boa and they never stopped since they really want that successful group that appeals to west heck they even made SuperM especially for a US market and it didn't work

  • SM has being pushing their artists to an American audience for years but something about SM music seems not that appealing to the western listeners SM artist will always be more relevant in Korean and Asian than the West

even to this point, nct chart on bb200 but they got the most atrocious streams ever

their music and concept is simply not for that

It's the cringey song and concept🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️.

    They're artists are talented though.

  • The US is the biggest music market. Even a piece of that market is extremely lucrative. A group does not have to top the charts or have high awareness with the American GP to make a shitton of money here. There are lots of artists in niche genres that are successful within their genres and making a lot of money. SM only has to look at its older groups, like TVXQ, SuJu, SHINee and EXO, to see it can create a continued revenue stream from loyal fans not only in Asia but other parts of the world - even with minimal promotional effort.

I keep going back to the point that the most successful tours here are NOT only the groups topping the charts, but the majority are not but have a loyal and devoted fanbase (they either topped them years ago or are a niche genre). Touring is much more lucrative to artist and company for both the concert sales and all the merch sales to support it.

I think the aespa rollout has been strange, but not unexpected (NCT 127 followed a similar path, but they also did an onslaught of radio shows and local market and national TV shows to create additional support rather than just a one off appearance at the Thanksgiving Day parade. By the time they got to the parade, they’d already been on national morning shows.)

Despite Kpop fans complaints about Kwangya or the music not being GP-friendly, aespa and other girl crush groups seem to be resonating within the Kpop niche in the US.

  • People are obviously too short sighted about what they consider success in a market. Companies are looking at profit and reach, not just charts. Charts and awards are cherries on top. Companies want you buy the album, buy the merchandise, go to the concert, promote the group for them, engage with them on social media, tell all your friends and family about them, etc. Regardless of how SuperM did, it exposed a lot of newer kpop fans not just to Baekhyun, Kai, and Taemin's solo work, but to EXO and Shinee as well. That's a green checkmark for SM.

There's a reason even "nugu" groups are promoting in the US... and it's not because companies think they're gonna go to the top of the charts, but because the US market is hungry for kpop and there is a lot of money to be made here. Even smaller groups were doing showcase tours pre-COVID because people show up. It's prime real estate for ANY group, not just the Big 4. The fact that you can walk into Target or Walmart and buy a kpop album is a huge sign that there's money here. These stores don't carry things that don't sell.

I remember when it happened with the anime market and you could just buy a Naruto DVD at Walmart. It sells so well that they keep a little section devoted just to anime (it's usually right next to the Funk Pops). Even though the anime bubble burst over a decade ago, even though multiple companies went bankrupt, even though it's still very much a niche genre, no one sits around and wonders why companies are trying to promote anime in the US.

nah. they only really push nct to west.

zero effort to exo and freakin red velvet that had huge potential for west market

  • Seriously some of you saying obsession like SM is trying so hard. That’s not really pushing what they’re doing, they’re barely trying and those who actually are fans of aespa know.

For example the Kelly Clarkson show appearance. They didn’t even make a new stage for that but sent an already existing performance video which they were going to post for Savage on their YouTube channel like they usually do.

It seems like it’s just bunch of stuff the western label is asking them to send or do but not that big of a priority. Saying it’s an obsession of the West because they’re doing their company job by promoting is hilarious.

If that’s pushing and obsession then they seem more “obsessed” with Indonesia. Because they put way more effort quality and quantity in the Indonesia shows and promos (which are great and fun imo).

The lineup for that Tokopedia award show was bananas. I legit thought they were just a collection of old stages when Blackpink popped up, but then I saw Lisa's hair.

    Deserved tbh

Even though it's online but they unified all the stages' design somehow and they never fail to make a quality stage video.

cause every company wants american success for their group even if their style doesnt fit with GP taste at all, ig they dont care

  • The same reason almost every kpop group promote in Japan eventually - money.

Kpop right now is no longer at the point where they need popularity before promoting in the West. There already some in-road and some connection. Kpop has already proven itself to be somewhat profitable and has a market share here in the US that some promotion can be done before any notable charting. The order of operation is different now compare to 2017.

It was happening that way long before 2017 as well. KCON has been around since 2012. Even BTS was touring in the US well before their crossover.

i know, i've been into kpop since 2005. the op was talking about promoting. no one say kpop touring in the US was "promoting", and OP was specifically preferring to charting, indicating the type of promotion we see since 2017. And aespa recently had a show on Kelly Clarkson. At least that's what I interpret what OP meant.
