Hello all!! So I’m just trying to compile the opinions of the kpop world to see what’s up!!! Tbh the new forum is just difficult for me to navigate in general sooooo I need to do it organically.
Just state the comebacks and why. Be it because you are a genuine fan and it didn’t meet expectations, because other people liked it enough for you to check it and it wasn’t your taste or whatever!
I’ll start! I was actually the most disappointed this year than I’ve ever been in music generally, but definitely in kpop the most. **this isn’t a ranking merely a list**
This is just fresh in my mind because someone made a thread specifically about it:
Don’t get me wrong I don’t HATE this song. I don’t even think I’d categorize it as a bad song or even a song I dislike. I kind of like this song… kind of. It sort of just lacks in general… in the hook that SOLO had, every black pink song in general has, and I guess Roses On The Ground (ps if I google the release of that song and it lands in 2021 you’ll be seeing it on this list), it lacked the dance aspect that I was hoping to see Lisa do because honestly the song isn’t super great for dancing and that’s her strength. I feel like something in the pseudo Somi (dumb dumbs chorus and rap), Chungha and Hyuna (Babe) route would have been better suited to show what she has to offer as a solo artist. And honestly the star appeal backing behind it???? Not there. Like honestly I feel like even chungha gets better looks/promotions/music video funding/production value. That was long winded and I didn’t even get to finish all of the reasons as to what disappointed me, but I still kind of like the song? I think I like Lisa enough and what she brings to the table in her style of rap/singing and dancing and visual that I could set aside that I hate this structure.
Alright so I’m going to start this off by saying that I think that they are hands down the most easy to watch people off and on stage. I actually LOVE watching their interviews and lives and stuff because I think they’re hilarious and I also think they’re amazing dancers, singers, low key SMs best rappers, and they’re all beautiful. This concept? Ain’t it. Trying to learn lyrics that reference their concept and set up sales of physical items? Ain’t it. There’s something about Aespa that seems very self serving to SM in a more obvious way to me. Like they are cutting out the middle man of pretending to put a song out that’s artistry and instead just straight up writing in lyrics about devices people will need to buy for this AI bs. I’m like???? Grossed out. And it is a shame because the girls themselves seem very genuine and very personable and sweet so it’s obvious that they wouldn’t choose this. The dance though??? A+ The video is sort of good but all of the CGI is irritating in my opinion.
ON THE GROUND. ROSÉ.
I googled it!!!! I was right!!!!! AND I warned you!!!!!! Alright. Again a song I don’t hate, but only because it was forced onto me by the Spotify playlist at my job. This song is just too repetitive for me. Say on the ground one more time bitch!!!! We KNOW!! Every. Thing. You. Need. Is. On. The. Ground. On the groooounnd. Again!!!! Same complaint for Lisa. This does not showcase her abilities. She deserves a song that is engaging and has heart in it OR has a message to it that empowers. This was very wet paper bag for me, but whatever. I also kind of don’t like the way she pronounces ground like Halsey but that’s a personal pet peeve
Onto the next one yall!!
I’M NOT COOL. HYUNA.
I actually named her as a reference for a good concept earlier, but again this song not it. The shouting and kind of just general talking of “I’m not cool” it’s self is very lackluster to me and the dance where she’s shrugging is like a joke in my opinion because HyunA is like an iconic dancer but whatever. Other than that I actually do kind of like this song so??? But def not adding to a playlist. Periodt.
NOT SHY/MITM. ITZY.
These songs I’m lumping together because they have the same issues as the other. These songs were just plain weird. They were hard to follow and pretty unenjoyable to me. This group actually is very reminiscent of Aespa’s problem. The girls themselves? Very lovable and extremely talented (Ryujins best rap is on Mixnine) but not shown in their own releases.
I honestly have a lot more so I’m going to take a break. Maybe I’ll edit this list to add in.
It’s been a minute and I’ve taken a hit and I’m ready for some more disappointment!
DUN DUN DANCE. OH MY GIRL.
I want to like oh my girl. They had such a cool concept and their vocals are so pretty and I know they’re “growing” but they’re growing in a youthful way or whatever but they are just too old to be acting like this!!!! They grew past dun dun dance right after Liar Liar was released! Come! On!!! I loved them before but they like… became strange to me? They just have gone down a musical path I can not get behind…. But that’s them and they’re successful. This song is a clear departure from the standard OMG song. It’s not bad, but they choice of how to sing some of the sliding notes is strange. Mimi was pretty good and Arin impressed me tbh because I was like??? You’re not just a doll that they have in the group???? You can actually sing??? Schooled me. But other than that the song was still not quite the grown concept that fits their age and the demographic age of their fans that started with them. I think more like a pinks recent music would be good. Anyways.
THE SONG JOY PUT OUT. JOY.
I know it looks like I’m a LOONA Stan based on the below picture, but I don’t know how to edit my profile anymore so I’m incognito! And sort of lying! I’m truly a Red Velvet Stan. They have literally never released anything I don’t at least like, with the majority of songs (b-sides and even side projects included) being songs that I LOVE. They are my favorite musical act in general. Out of all music in my life. More than Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Troye Sivan, Kim Petras, Travis Scott. Like honestly out of all genres and eras, this group really has resonated with me the longest and best. The day they disband I will be truly heartbroken. However! This song is so boring. She is a grown ass woman. I will never view this WOMAN the same after Peek-A-Boo was released. She changed a generation. She brought being comfortable with a curvy body back to kpop! This song is embarrassing. I feel like it’s called Hello because she says Anyeong in a very aegyo voice, but I could be wrong. Like this a beautiful grown woman who is secretly dating rappers… this song is embarrassing! They have to go to clubs together and bars! Girl!!!
