Do you think Hybe/Source Music intended not to resign GFriend?

  • Something must have gone wrong at the last minute and we won't ever know unless the members speak about it. But sometimes, things should be kept hidden too if necessary. Maybe there will come a day when they feel comfortable speaking about it.

  • Doesnt anyone else find it suspicious that Hybe literally shocked EVERYONE by dumping Gfriend in May, only to find out that Hybe will now be signing at least 2-3 Izone members for Source Music? I dont believe in coincidences.

Everyone expected Izone to be extended, then BAM, Msnake unceremoniously dumps the most successful 4th gen group in all of Kpop. PUP starts gaining momentum and hope and then BAM, Msnake suddenly drops the negotiations and says Izone wont be reunited. Meanwhile, poor members and even staff are apparently shell shocked with Gfriend's abrupt disbandment, werent there well known plans for Gfriend that were made within weeks before their disbandment?

The end result? Source jettisons their older GG and in exchange, gets 2-3 of the most popular Izone members.

I think these events are only connected in that they planned on having GFriend and probably already signed deals with networks and or shows etc. involving them and when GFriend surprised them by not re-signing they now have scrambled to assemble this "IZONE 2.0" as an attempt to make good on those business partners they had already negotiated deals with - it just all feels so rushed to me

Kind of like how TV stations in the USA have had to give free ads to their advertisers because the Olympics ratings were way lower than those advertisers were expecting and had already paid for in advance

    If that makes sense

  • Source is not is debt please stop spreading that misinfo, it comes from fans that can't read income and financial statements right and took reported debt financing (which is normal for subsidiaries, Pledis and Koz are in "debt" too) as an actual debt.

Anyway, I personally think that not all of the Gfriend members wanted to continue as group because they wanted to try new things since Source has been pretty restrictive (+ some of the members were having health complaints like joint problems due to their hard choreo, they mentioned wanting to lead a healthier life multiple times already) and I think instead of continuing a group with the members left or launch their solo careers, Source decided to drop them all together. Seeing that they didn't try to reunite as a group under a different label and some members aren't even idols anymore (Sowon for example), I personally think this is the most likely situation. They also did not terminate earlier like people say, Gfriend's contracts were signed in 2014 with group looking to debut on november 5, 2014 but the debut got postponed to 2015.

Whatever really happened in negotiations, we can for a fact say that Source really dropped the ball when it comes to disbanding. They really fucked that up for the fans. I hope to god they don't repeat that mistake again.

Interesting, i didnt know Source had already made these kinds of deals.

It might seem rushed now but maybe Hybe will slow down and make sure the GG is well prepared before they actually debut. Getting veteran and notable names within the Kpop world like those Izone members should definitely help speed up preparations.

  • I guess we will never know the reason until one member speaks about it. But I don't believe at all the theory that the disbandment was planned since HYBE aquired Source Music and that they were disbanded because of the new girlgroup they want to debut. It does not match with how sudden and unprepared the disbandment felt nor with the fact they were integrated to the museum. And their 2020 comebacks did not give me the impression that the group was neglected or anything, on the contrary.

I guess it's possible that after Mago, HYBE/Source Music were not satisfied with Gfriend's results (none of their 2020 songs charted well in Korea) as they had been expected more growth and so they finally decided not to renew the contract or made change in the contract proposition that Gfriend's members did not agree with. I don't know.

Or maybe the company was confident with their renewal but eventually the members decided they wanted to focus on solo activities. So many possibilities...

  • I’m sure that’s not how contract works

Their contract was signed in 2014 with pre debut promo starting in October of 2014 revealing the members after that complete silence until more promo in december of 2014 and debut in 2015 of January. Kpop idols sign the group contract the moment they start the debut marketing campaign. Kpop idols have a contract for their group/as idol and as trainee. The contract isn't signed on the actual date of debut y'know.

    GFRIEND
GFRIEND (Hangul: 여자친구; Japanese: ジーフレンド) was a six-member girl group formed by Source Music. They released their debut mini album Season of Glass on January…

Also I found an old time table HYBE made last year where they put the time of contract expiration for their groups. Gfriend's contract expires in 2021 and not in January of 2022.

  • Tbh I really don't understand why I keep on seeing ppl (not only op) saying "huge gg", "huge impact", "competition to ngg", etc regarding gfriend. Nothing they did lately was any huge, they were clearly on decline or very sad stagnation even with all those pretty latest mvs, concepts and stages they got after becoming a part of hybe. They would be not a competition to anyone, definitely not to a Izone subunit. What company would want to keep them even, especially if they are not the only group this company gets income from? Yet, if to think about museum it actually looks like hybe might do not mind to keep them despite of such situation. Now, looking at how fast majority of members signed with other agencies mayhaps they actually didn't even plan to resign with hybe and had other plans in mind already yet nobody cared to tell about it to their company and only when company themselves started conversation about resigning not long before contract expiration date they said it clearly. Then sudden situation also makes sence lol

Anyways, speaking seriously nobody will ever know about what's exactly going on behind the scenes unless someone from behind the scenes tells it, so all y'all can do is just wait if mayhaps it will happen.

  • But the table only said 2021. am i blind or where does it say may of 2021? if they start debuting in october/november the contract should also end in october/november 2021?

    Edit:

It would also be the first time ever i heard from a 6 and half year contract. normal is 7 or sometimes 6 year contracts.

  • With GFriend for about 3-4 years there were talk that either Umji or Yuju will leave, there were always rumors

then near this contract negotiation period Sowon had nazi controversy

We will never know but what if one of members didn't want to continue as a group, and other was thinking about acting?

that would just make 4 members which want to renew contract and continue group promotions, which in my opinion doesn't make any sense because sales would go down for example from 60 to 40k, and in same time second contract is always better than first one, so Source would need to pay girls more, maybe from economic point of view renewal didn't make any sense for agency as well.

oop sorry my mistake, the "5" does not stand for May but for the member count + leader. But basically it does show that Gfriend's contract expires in 2021 and not in January of 2022 on their debut like people say. Also the contract could be earlier than oct/nov since they start the marketing campaign, recording, dancing usually after the contract is signed which does need a couple months. Tho this is speculation not 100% but could be a reason why it's in May instead.

  • I think the primary reason for their disbanding might be less shady as some people think. For groups to disband there could be several factors a) one or two do not want to continue as idols b) some want to take breaks c) going solo d) not work for source music for whatever reasons etc. The list is long but people are just focusing on the fact that source music is now a part of Hybe and the new gg

Thanks. Yes 2022 is surely not correct. May still seems a little bit early compared to other groups and their debut but well untill no people who were really involved in this case spill some tea we dont know. Guess i will wait for the day someone tell us what really happend.

  • I don't think they intended not to resign them, I actually think this Izone project now is their plan B of having an "established" gg (even with new members, they'll have a fanbase, know the drill etc) bc they lost Gfriend. The plan was clearly to keep Gfriend around, and it fell through for unknown reasons. They invested a lot in their comebacks in 2020 and made them part of their public stuff, makes no sense if they were gonna get rid of them.

Yerin signed with an acting agency, some members haven't signed with anyone. Maybe they simply didn't all want to continue as full-time idols and that's why it didn't work out.

  • except mago wasnt huge... gfriend's last two releases didnt do too hot, definitely nowhere near their more popular tracks. i think the members either werent offered what they wanted and dipped or some of the members were never going to re-sign in the first place so the whole group decided to leave. it is rlly not unfathomable that it was the members who called it quits for whatever reason. hybe and source were anticipating them re-signing which is pretty obvious.

I used to be a buddy but I had a falling out after fever.

Or I already swerve to iz*one at that time.

But I thought mago hitting big coz my friend is a buddy and he always talk about it on discord everynight when it's released .

  • you cant seriously think a fan liking a song is a measure of how well its doing on charts...

No coz were pretty rational (my guild server).

More like a multi but have an ult.

And even voicings our strong opinion on some group that someone Stan on the server but no one got mad.

Coz it's just a casual talk while playing an online games , nothing serious .

It just that when we're on the topic he said somethings about YouTube views , sales, etc mago got .

When he rarely talk about that kind of stuff .

So, I thought it got pretty big .

And in my country GFRIEND is definitely top 5 .

    So I believe it.

  • If Hybe didn't intend to keep GFriend. Why did they integrate them into the Museum? The opening of the Museum and the confirmation of GFriend disbanding was only 4 days. GFriend was also in all the marketing of the new Building. That doesn't seem like moves that a company would do if they didn't intend to keep them.

that’s exactly what I said when I seen the news of their disbandment. My Twitter was literally full with the new Gfriend museum section days before the news. They did a video promoting it then the news came out, it just didn’t make sense for me to blame only Hybe for the disbandment.

I do think they intended to keep them. We don’t know the reason but maybe it took them by surprise too? Did they jumped to the gun and set up the museum thinking they gonna resign the contract?

They definitely made a mistake when dealing with the fans on Weverse but I don’t think they kicked them out.
