Now that all the BP members have released their solos, were you impressed?

  • Did the BLACKPINK members' solo albums and comebacks impress you? 46

    1. Yes (35) 76%
    2. No (11) 24%

Their return to the international stage as solo artists, the four of them individually and yet together, has been teased and anticipated for a long time.

Well the first chapter of their journey as solo pop stars has truly begun.

Did Lisa succeed in ****ing up the world? Do you want to be like Jennie? Does Rose make you want to play on your gameboy? Did Jisoo's new music cause an earthquake in your area?

    VOTE.

This will public, so stand on business when you weigh in.

  • :/

So honestly, Lisa's was the most predictable, it is a fantastic album for sure but it does have some lows like Moonlit Floor.

Jennie's was very VERY connected conceptually and executed very well, it is very cohesive.

Same with Rose and Jisoo, they all had consistency and stuck the landing well across the board.

Whereas Lisa chose her concept to be the concept of multiple alter egos and concepts, which while she did execute it, some of the b-sides and previously mentioned Moonlit Floor, brought the conceptual thing down for me. I was like this is all great except that one song, and then slowly, a couple of the B-Sides became overly repetitive and boring after a few plays. Whereas the other 3 girlies b-sides I play more than the title tracks. Which to be honest I really hate that as I was fully expecting me to end up liking ALL of Lisa's stuff but then Moonlit Floor happened a couple months ago and then Chill and BadGRRRRRRL happened. :lsfm14:

I really love Dream though a lot.

  • A doofus that thinks XG sounds like NewJeans, an army and a dork that clearly hates Blackpink

    Funny times

HEY!! :cursing: Don't go by stereotypes! I may be an ARMY and not a full-fledged Blink, but I actually LOOOVE BLACKPINK and their group music and previous solos they had under YG and own all of their albums except for Born Pink, and I was SO EXCITED for their new solo albums and SO READY to buy all of them, too!!

I was even going to give the last 3 spaces I have left in my Kpop collection to their remaining solo albums (I already have Rosé's), but aside from Rosie, which gave me an even greater respect for Rosé as both a pop star and as an artist because it showed off her previously mostly-unknown songwriting ability and unique and strong artistic vision for her solo album in Kpop, none of them impressed me! They all really let me down! They all really let down my twin sister too besides Rosie, who is also an ARMY/basically Blink too and was so excited for them as well!!

I thought Lisa was going to have the most amazing solo of all, but wut happened?! Her album had no vision and many empty, weak, or noisy AF songs with no lyrical substance whatsoever. Rockstar eventuality grew on me a lot but originally sounded like straight up noise music (tho I LOVED the MV), Moonlit Floor was also a poor choice because it was simply a remake of a song that highlighted the original singer's vocals, but she is an amazing rapper especially for Kpop, but admittedly vocals were never her specialty! I liked the overall message of her title track, but FUTW was largely just a bunch of annoying chants after the annoying "I think I just I just might" part

Jennie's album was overall pretty good/not bad and did show off her versatility but her choice of title track, Like Jennie, was even admitted by other users on this forum to sound more like an intro song than a title track and was arguably be the weakest song off the album! The MV didn't look very high budget either and Jennie could've been mistaken for a backup dancer in her own music video who just happened to be the only female one out of a crowd of males, who they for whatever reason decided to put in the middle, she lacked that much unique stage presence in the video, tho hers is normally great live, and her outfit was almost identical to her backup dancers' too! ZEN's music video was a high quality cinematic triumph and gave me a lot of East Asian pride, but the song severely lacked a proper structural memorable melody, and overall sounded extremely empty as well (although just to prove that I am indeed a BP fan and not just a stereotypical hater ARMY, I did enjoy the powerful drum beats and some of the lyrics/powerful-sounding rapping).

I mean I could go on and on about all the individual songs off Lisa's album and Jisoo's album too (decent-to-good title track but relatively weak empty-sounding tho had a fun beat, b-sides were a bunch of unmemorable snoozefests tho which really disappointed me because I thought they would all be a bunch of more upbeat dance tracks similar to earthquake, which really did grow on me after a couple of listens, but all sounded sonically similar and I can't even distinguish any of them from each other in my memory), but this post is already way too TL;DR

I just wanted to say, as a previous huge fan of BLACKPINK and their previous releases under YG, I was severely underwhelmed and let down by their solo efforts and will probably mostly continue near-stanning them out of habit rather than any genuine excitement about their most recent or future activities under their solo labels, which I guess makes sense since this is their first time and they're all completely inexperienced in running their own companies, and probably using different producers (at least non-in house YG producers most notably Teddy).

I'm fully pinning my last hopes for BP on their future group comeback under YG later this year before I probably just go on to mostly support Rosé's future music activities and just check out the other members releases as a casual sporadic hopeful thing that they may by some small chance improve drastically.

But I'm clearly not the only one who has lost a lot of interest in at least BP's solo activities, if not quite their group ones yet, if you compare their current YT views of their latest solo MVs to their old ones or even their album sales. (I don't have Spotify so I haven't been able to keep up w/their streams there since I also quit using X/formerly known as Twitter since Musk's support of Trump, Nazism, and current disastrous management of the American government has been unveiled, but I recognize that would be considered the stronger argument as a digital metric of their past to current success).

I would really LOOOVE and strongly hope more than anything for BP to change my mind later with their future solo endeavors, but until then, NO, I HAVEN'T BEEN IMPRESSED BY THEIR SOLOS WHEN I KNOW BY MY PREVIOUS FANDOM OF THEM THAT THEY'RE CAPABLE OF DOING SO MUCH BIGGER AND GREATER!

Previously-longtime-almost BLINK and YES, ARMY, because WE CAN SUPPORT BOTH OF KPOP'S 2 BIGGEST GROUPS AT THE SAME TIME HERE OUT! :p *mic drop

  • tbh honest...

I really was only mainly targeting the other two.

  • tbh honest...

I really was only mainly targeting the other two.

Whatever, ok, but that doesn't change the fact that you still targeted me too, and that pissed me off when it's soso inaccurate in my case and people always act like being an ARMY and being a BLACKPINK supporter are mutually exclusive when in fact nothing could be further from the truth when in fact they both probably have TONS of fans who support the other, considering they're both Kpop's 2 biggest groups rn and extremely popular worldwide, and sooo many ARMY & Blinks were SOOO chill when Taehyung & Jennie's dating rumors came out compared to what they could've been, probably because many of them LIKE BOTH GROUPS AND WANTED TO BE CHILL ABOUT IT!

But like whatever I forgive you. Since you said you're mostly targeting the other users, which does seem possible since most of the words in your sentence were dedicated to the others and just and one (well 2) words for me: "an ARMY".

Just no one in this forum, and definitely not this thread, better make the same mistake about me, or any other ARMYs here for that matter, again that we *ALL* haTE BLACKPINK and are out to destroy them and sabotage their career when that's mainly a bunch of annoying brainless and toxic people on Twitter who have nothing better to do than to feed off each other's negative energy and be edgy for likes and retweets, and doesn't even include all ARMY or Blinks anyway! There are millions of both of us in the world, and generalizing them all to be a bunch of hate-crazed lunatics bc of that one community is not only wrong, it's inaccurate. Not to mention harmful. Especially to the general Kpop community. We really need to do something about this deleterious attitude that "it's either you or me" that has evolved in Kpop due to the gross massive over saturation of Kpop groups, overall toxification of the internet culture, and scarcity mindset that superyeah loves to talk about that.

Kpop used to be about competition in the past too, back in 2nd gen when I first became a Kpop fan, but at the end of the day we were all still having lots of fun cuz once upon a time we all understood that we were all part of one niche community and fans of the same thing: Kpop, and a win for one group on the global scale was a win for all! Now people have lost sight of that and it's all just about individual fandoms and groups, companies, and fandoms thinking that another one's loss is another one's gain, when in reality Kpop is STILL kind of a niche genre and community at the end of the day mostly and a win for one of us is STILL a win for us all! That's when I see so many other people truly unhappy for things like Lisa's Oscars performance, which once upon a time would've been a cause for massive celebration throughout the whole Kpop fandom, I just get so sad cuz I think it just shows most of us have really lost sight of what Kpop's all about: all of us across the world putting aside our differences to devote ourselves to really loving idols and music from the same country, a place many of us consider to be a foreign country from a foreign part of the world and uniting over it to have fun and make magic and miracles and amazing things happen and break barriers for Asian music and performers despite our language barrier and cultural differences!

Maybe that's part of why so many of us are starting to lose interest in the genre and why Kpop's starting to lose steam even after it exploded to unprecedented levels of success globally during the pandemic. Fandom has just become too toxic and divided with so many groups around that it's just not as much fun anymore as it used to be during 3rd gen (for example) when most of our biggest faves were booming the brightest and the majority of us fans here today were all falling for the same couple of acts and finding out about this amazing genre at the same time.

Oh no, guess I'll have to look at that new Signatures & Profile Pics FAQ thing that I just noticed earlier today but was ignoring in favor of creating more engagement for posts 😅

It works on the "borahae" site layout tho, where you can see the whole thing just fine, which I just changed to today so I could read so many people's white text posts, but I'll go see if I can go fix it now so that EVERYONE can see it and experience the greatness of 2NE1 paving the way. Thanks for pointing it out politely & setting a fire under my butt in front of everyone to remind me so now I HAVE to do it~ XD (No, but rly, thanks :finger-heart:  :borahae: )

I was reading your manifesto and was like :Angy2: where did 2NE1 go? :ihazacape:

  • Thanks for referencing what I said.

I like both you and ThePhantomThief , though. Not sure what he means, but I hope he realizes there are good Armys around and some are also multistans.

  • Musically I was a bit disapointed by Lisa. I think she releases some really good singles, but she doesn’t have what it takes to make great albums maybe? No enough versatily or vocals idk. Maybe next time she should release an ep and get a bit more personal ...

Rose album was underwelming but i wasn't surprised, i never really liked her style of singing or her tone.

Jisoo release bops tho so props to her!

And in the end, they really went ALL IN, just that is so impressive!

Specially Jennie. She released a legendary album really, specially in korea.

You can really feel how much they love music and how ambitious they are. It makes so much sense now why THIS girls are BP members.

  • Zen is a masterpiece :meme-bonk: .

To bad you couldn’t grasp it's greatness :pepe-shrug: . It mostly lies in subtility and restrain yet power and meaning.

Not all songs have to be hyper catchy, the big chorus is catchy enough.

Zen is Jennie at the top of her game! Best vocals, best rap. Best tone.

  • I already discussed this a bit in a previous thread, but only Jennie impressed me, but I always had her as probably havimg the second best release in my mind, and she ended up as having the best. Rose was a disappointment relative to my expectations of her, which were a bit high. Lisa and Jisoo met expectations, which is to say they weren't going to release anything special and didn't.

  • Retrospectively, Jisoo's ep has really risen for me. Like it's bops after bops for real!

so this is my current ranking.

    1. Ruby (AMAZING)

    >>>

    2. Armotage (really good despite the vocal limitations!)

    3. Alter Ego (too long and lacked substance but full of bops)

    4. Rosie (too repetitive and lacked identity but had some nice and touching ballads)

Rosie has some good songs, like 2 or 3 appart apt (which i didn't like much) but again the whole album is too repetitive. At last Alter Ego has some solid bops on it. Like quite a few. I felt like a EP would have been better for Rosie maybe.

Somehow i made a bp solo playlist, and it's interesting how they all complement each others as a whole.

    That's it :iconpepe: .

  • Not really. I haven't heard something groundbreaking, something special. Is just very commercial pop. Also, they are average to bad singers, so the best impressions i had in that area were from the guest artists (Bruno Mars, Rosalia, Raye, etc, etc.) In other words: Meh.

  • I don't follow them. And the only song which broke out of the usual fandom/kpop circles was APT.

I liked APT ok, kind of an entrancing beat. And I recollect liking Jisoo's Flower.

Since neither went on my re-listen list. I am not impressed.

But then I was never the sort of audience for BP's music and their solos don't seem much different either.

    So just an opinion.

They have millions of fans, so won't miss me one person not being impressed.

And I have other artists to listen to.

  • How could I not be impressed? In just a few months each member of the largest girl group EVER released more music than even the group itself has released. Among those songs is literally the 2nd biggest hit ever to come out of kpop. They are breaking records and hitting milestones on the global scale that probably won't be touched by other gg soloists for years. And on top of that, each album has a variety of bangers for all to enjoy. My personal favorite so far is Jennie and Jisoo, with Jennie's album just being on another level for me. Can you imagine any other girl group being able to do the same? The answer is no, because BP are one of one.

  • Lisa - Her album was okay musically for me. I feel like it was lacking that oomph.

Jisoo - I honestly don't recall too much of it.

Jennie - Except for starlight, I didn't really like the album. It felt too noisy? Or I wasn't the target audience.

Rose - Music wise, it was okay. I do love Rose lyrics so I ocassionally come back to it. I appreciate how personal and upfront she is about herself.

I feel like Jennie, Lisa and Jisoo's albums lack sincerity. It feels like a mass production of pieces for me. Rose's had a touch of herself and was more sincere despite it not being the genre I like.

All in all, I'm not their target audience and I found most of their songs insincere.

  • Imo this is why she won’t be able to break into the market(and also why apart from APT her album wasn’t as well received as it could have been). It’s saturated with the American pop girlies already.

Yeah, that market Rose is going for is too saturated, not because there are many singers who do that, but because few who do are HUGE in popularity, they fill in that space and there is no space for anyone else.
