How much do visuals matter to you when deciding whether you want to stan a group?

  • Title

    Key word is stan.

    My perspective:

If I'm going to stan a group and follow their content and socials and invest in their albums, visuals matter to me a LOT. i think I take it too seriously nowadays. Reason being, I like pretty things. I like things that my eyes find appealing and nice to look at.

There's a ton of groups I listen to casually without really caring about the members. The reason I don't full on stan these groups is because I'm not a fan of their visuals, even if I like their music

    What are your thoughts?

  • Visuals are not a make or break it for me though it is eye pleasing to stare at a handsome man. However, there's plenty of groups where I'm not physically attracted to anyone, but I enjoy them for their music. I would say it's about 50% important to me but it's not something that deters me from enjoying a group.

with the amount of groups i stan anyway, my taste is all over the place.

  • It’s gotta be a visual that catches my attention, regardless if it checks out with beauty standard. I just must like what I see and feel when I follow an artist to become a stan.

It’s important to point out that there ain’t no stanning someone I find ugly, that’s for sure.

Ever since CL and Hyuna I haven’t stanned anybody. I don’t think I can be a stan anymore, tbh. Inner conflict alert lol

me too tbh; my taste is all over the place too

I can't decide on one genre I like. i can listen to a bit of everything. if my faves released it, well, I have a serious case of Stockholm syndrome and ill give myself reasons to like it.

one part I forgot to mention about why visuals are so important to me, is that it's the first impression that decides the fate of a group in my heart. if I look at a group and don't find anyone interesting (read: attractive) looking, I'm not motivated to check the members out even if I adore their music.

one other thing: there's got to be 2 members I can't tell apart at the beginning. it's a common pattern in every group I seriously stan. it keeps me on edge and forces me to check back on them

    same here

it's all about the first impressions too

my taste in people's looks is insanely inconsistent too, and my standards are pretty low. maybe that's why I stan so many groups. it's more about the vibe, I think. like, there's quite a few idols I like not because I like their face but more about their aesthetics and the way they carry themselves

  • For me, I’m open to a group even if I don’t find anyone visually compelling at first—it’s like I can still connect with their music and energy, and the visuals become more of a bonus. Sometimes, I find that once I get to know the members’ personalities and talent, they become attractive to me in other ways.

And that’s so relatable about the “two members you can’t tell apart”! I feel like half the fun at the beginning is trying to figure out who’s who.

There's groups where I know 16 individual names and some where there's 3 or 4. Some where I can't even get half of them in a 9 member group but i'll be damned if i can't tell you all 16 in The Rampage.

but don't ask me about Seventeen i know like 3 or 4 lol

  • visuals are only important to get you into the person or group. imagine cheering for someone and consuming their content only because they are visually pleasing to the eyes. that's right you can't unless there's no thoughts in your head. that said it's still really important and the reason why prettier people have a bigger following

  • I’m always going to notice pretty people, but all of my biases in groups I like have not been people I noticed initially or considered particularly attractive. They become miles more attractive by their talents/personalities/charisma - and often much much later after I start becoming a fan of the group.

  • I think I want charisma more then looks. A pretty face who can't perform on stage is of no use so I'm definitely looking at how much someone catches my attention while they're performing.

Also as a collective whole I want variety vs uniformity. If the faces are all very good looking but very similar and I can't tell them apart after the second or third song then I stop being interested as individuals. I'll still listen to the songs if I enjoy them but might not reach stanning where I'm interested in their extracurricular activities.

  • As important as talent. Tha's why one of the only groups I truly like is SHINee. They meet everything you'd want from a group - real talent in singing, amazing live performances, great dancing, really handsome (you can see they natrall have the feautres and don't need any enchancements n reality), the music is nearly flawless with one of the most diverse discorgraphies in kpop, cool concepts, etc. Their visuals is equal o the talent and the outstanding performances they can give.

If t 's not the full package as above, I won't be really into the group. However, still, talent&music >>>>>>> visuals.

  • I do think visuals are important...

But I can't stare at pictures of Chaeryeong and Yoohyeon while driving (well, I can... but that ended badly last time).

Music is more important for me. I gotta vibe with the music first and foremost. I think Twice for me is a good example. There are some hella visuals in Twice, but I don't quite vibe with with most of their music, and that's what makes me Stan a group.

    Good visuals are just icing.

And I think, like real world attraction to someone, the appeal of an idols visual can grow when you start stanning the group, consuming content and being drawn to them.

As the forums biggest Chaeryeong simp, I'm going to drop a bomb...

Before I went head first into Itzy stanning just after Mafia dropped... I did not like Chaeryeongs visuals. She didn't appeal to me at all. It's too harsh to say I found her ugly but... yeah. Then I really liked Mafia in the Morning and started consuming a lot of Itzy content at the time.

And the more I watched, the more I noticed Chaeryeongs character and found her kind of funny and silly, but still not attractive...

Then one day I watched this

And at some point in the show, people in nearby apartments to me must have heard an extremely loud CRACK sound as something in my brain snapped as I went from finding Chae unattractive to being completely, utterly head over heels. Something about her sweet, dorky, shy, silly persona completely won me over. This Phantom Thief's heart... was stolen.

    The rest is history.
