Look at the trendiest groups, Kpop truly going international even within Korean GP.

  • Ive is 33 percent non Korean or mixed (assuming WY is part Chinese).

Lesserafim is 40 percent non Korean.

Aespa is 50 percent non Korean or mixed (Giselle).

Gidle is 60 percent non Korean.

Blackpink is 25 percent non Korean and 50 percent nonnative (Rose born in NZ).

New Jeans is 40 percent non Korean or mixed (Danielle).

For a country that is super homogenous (95 percent Korean), this is pretty darn interesting if you ask me. Maybe we need to give Koreans a break when it comes to dragging them for xenophobia. Me included, i was damn harsh about it when my foreign fave blew up everywhere except in Korea. But the way the Korean Kpop fans and general public have rallied to these groups' music, maybe it's time to rethink the narrative.

For those interested, the rest of the current top 10 best performing groups are all pure Korean afaik (StayC, BTS, Oh My Girl, Red Velvet).

  • If people wanna explore the topic of xenophobia in SK, popularity of kpop idols isnt it

They should watch the show My neighbor charles, about real foreigner living in Korea as normal people.

Korea just like other countries got some good people and some racist people too.

  • i agree partly, but also; entertainment media isn't always the best measuring stick for weather a country is tolerant or not. as an american who grew up in south, i can definitely say racism against black people is still highly prevalent (right outside my apartment, there are several poorly-made graffiti attempts of racial slurs), but beyonce, lizzo, rihanna, cardi b, etc. are still loved by many people here.

  • All members of BTS are Korean - are you thinking of some other group?

i think it was a joke about them being "westernized"

now i'm dissecting the frog :emotionalpepe:

  • I'd say most Koreans have always been welcoming to foreigners, especially when it comes to entertainment. Foreigners often bring something unique to the table; many Koreans love that. For every xenophobic Korean, there are many more who appreciate foreigners' immersion in Korean culture.

Is it possible for them to appreciate foreigners while also holding elitist attitudes towards other Asian countries? Yes. That comes with centuries of hegemony and hierarchy in the Asian continent. The xenophobic comments and prejudiced views have always been a thing; the Internet just gave a platform for the louder voices to be highlighted. Aside from those louder voices, everyone else doesn't care. They listen to what they like; race or ethnicity of the artist has no bearing on whether or not they like it.

Asian ethnic groups have a complicated relationship with each other. They're aware of the tension, but they also enjoy each other's culture and products.

  • it's just that those young Koreans who are into kpop are open minded, want to be trendy, travel to US, AUS, Europe

    so they don't mind but...

on the other hand remember that thread about Trainee A team or however they are called, that new group from HYBE?

when photos were posted there were tons of shit on k-forums

"they don't look Korean, they are all mixed, they are all foreigners" etc.

  • What's about NCT

    Overall 59% Korean/confirmed Korean descent

(127 is 89% Korean, Dream is 71% Korean, and WayV is of course 0%)

...I say confirmed because it's widely believed that Renjun is also of Korean descent due to the region of China he is from, but he only refers to himself as Chinese.
