Don't all the 4th gen gg only have a few popular members?

  • Every single time I see 4th gen girl groups being discussed, people always mention how only a few members are popular in a certain group. For example, you might have already seen something along the lines of this but:

"The only relevant person in gidle is soyeon."

"Ive is being carried by yujin and wonyoung."

"How is stayc popular when most people cant even name all the stayc members?"

    Etc.

However I don't think theres a single 4th gen girl group where all the members are popular.

    Popular members per Group:

gidle: soyeon and yuqi with shuhua making a few waves

    itzy: ryujin, yeji, yuna

stayc: yoon, with sieun making a few waves

ive: wonyoung, yujin, with leeseo making a few waves

    aespa: karina,winter

nmixx: sullyoon, jinni, with lily and haewon making a few waves

les serafim: sakura, chaewon, and garam except garams popularity is just... yk

billie: literally only tsuki, maybe sua if you're being nice

everglow: yiren, Mia with shihyeon and Aisha making a few waves

Kepler: yujin, babihiyih, with xaioting, mashiro, and chaehyun making a few waves

I think at this point the only 4 girl groups where nonfans might be able to name all the members is Itzy, Gidle, Ive, and Aespa but even then, that's just naming. That doesnt mean all the members are popular and it's kind of dumb to try to out down a certain group because they're only popular because of a certain member or two when that's applicable to all the 4th gen eggs.

    Approved the thread.
  • There's always going to be members who are more popular than the others. For all groups.

I'd argue though that the less popular members for some groups are still in a good position... just because they aren't as popular as other members doesn't mean they are unknown or in a bad position.

  • That's the case for all groups. There aren't many groups like MAMAMOO, I disagree with you on STAYC. Sieun is actually the 2nd least popular (but best known to the general public).

STAYC have an even popularity between Isa (most popular)/Yoon (most popular) >> J (2nd most popular) > Seeun > Sieun > Sumin. Isa and Yoon are far more popular than the others but unlike all the other companies you mentioned above, STAYC's company and fans promotes them equally and so there isn't a huge disparity.

With groups like Aespa, members like Ning Ning could blow up if they had more fair treatment and screentime like the other top members. Similarly with NMIXX, Jinni (she's popular but could be more), Kyujin and Jiwoo, and Everglow, Aisha.

But for Lesserafirm, Garam is 2nd least popular (with the scandal), it's Kazuha for 3rd and coming close to 2nd. Yunjin is ahead of Garam in popularity too, but it's closer than it is with Kazuha.

In Kepler Yujin is one of the least popular members, it's Xiaoting (most popular), Bahiyyih, and Hikaru as the most popular, and Yujin & Mashiro as the least.

In Ive Liz is 3rd most popular, not Leeseo.

In Gidle, Miyeon and Yuqi are the most popular, with Soyeon making waves. Soyeon is like Hwasa where she's not as popular in the fandom.

  • But the same be applied to 3rd gen ggs and 2nd gen ggs.

There will always be the most popular and the least popular members in kpop groups.

Even in those massively, widely well known kpop groups we still can tell who are the most and the least popular, and even if they are all well known its not like their names became public knowledge overnight, we are talking about groups that have been promoting for 5+ years not for 1 or less than a year like the ones you mentioned.

  • 4th gen girl groups just came out tbh it’s not expected that all members would be popular

  • I feel like everyone agrees with the point I made and doesn't understand that was the point I was trying to make.

I literally agree. Every group has popular members carrying it. The only reason I said 4th gen gg is because those are the ones I listed and I'm too lazy to do every single group in kpop. But basically my main point is every single group is being carried by one, two, or maybe 3 popular members so it's dumb to try to put down a group for being carried by its popular members when that's what's happening in every single group.

    Omg yes

    YOure right

In fact this applies to every kpop group

  • Within each group, there are obviously some members more popular than others. But, there are some groups where the least popular members are as popular or far more popular than the most popular in other groups.

Like Jisoo or Rose would still be more popular than most other idols. Something similar for Yeri, Wendy, NingNing and Giselle compared to many other idols as well.

The smaller groups will always do better in this regard.

  • Only people who don't know Idle say Soyeon is the only popular one.

She's the most well known one.

Yuqi is popular, which is interesting given the small but vocal anti-chinese flavor that has percolated in Korea last few months. She has plenty of fans and gets all sorts of Variety, and obviously very popular in China.

Minnie has become incredibly popular in Korea and is building a rep in Thailand. She had the most watched Fancam by far from Tomboy and there is heaps, and I mean heaps, of praise for her vocals and looks. Her Mujin episode popped off and has far more views then the others to date.

Miyeon's is extremely popular in Korea. Honestly enough said - it's Miyeon. She gets commentary and invites all the time.

Shuhua isn't as popular in Korea, but her improvement has not become unnoticed in the intl fandom, and she got massive cheers and reception recently. Also she's very popular on Weibo, it's considered an honor to get a scathing comeback from Shuhua.

So Idle have a very distinct group that are all popular, but in different ways. And that's what you want.

  • what was the point of this? all the members are known in the fandom (obviously) but I was talking about non-fans.

  • I think a populary disparity among members is bound to happen for almost all groups.

BUT (g)i-dle is a very bad example. The members' popularity is as equal as any.

I remember seeing a popularity poll a few months ago on website and, even though the website was not very well known and the poll didn't get a massive amount of votes, I was nonetheless surprised to see that each member gathered around 20% of votes (within a range of something like 17-23 iirc).

All members are able to shine in their own way and the b-side MY BAG (which is still reaching new heights two months after release) is probably very successful for that reason as it has been expressly written with that purpose in mind.
