not everybody considers those songs to be a hit though...

I keep hearing money and itzy bsides in almost ever other tiktok edit my friends send me ay. Ig they are a hit on those platforms.

I usually settle on just local hit and international hit. If you try to lower the bar, it will be a lot relative as most kpop groups can’t chart well on official charts

I mean most kpop songs are only capable of being hits in South Korea. Unless they’re able to chart on say multiple country charts in the top 10 then they’d be global hits.

Every time you say hit you should prefix it with South Korean hit for the majority of kpop songs. Because they’re not ‘hits’ in the way a lot of other popular international songs are hits.

With that said SK is a tiny country. Being a hit in a tiny country at the end of the day doesn’t mean anything. Groups have Spotify listener base is bigger than entire Melon user base lol. So to fixate on SK is quite silly.

We have a general hit by kpop standard which I think is a good metric. That means say 5mil UL on Spotify, million album sales, able to cross 300mil on YouTube etc. and I think this is a very good metric.

Bottom line SK is a tiny country with a small user base. Being a hit there doesn’t mean anything in the global landscape. It’s more important to see the approximate overall number of listeners for a song and that can be approximated by looking at international numbers.

If a group gets 5mil Spotify UL in a month and while some of the biggest Korean hits have LIFE ULs of 5mil let alone monthly, I don’t think the Korean hit means anything.
