can we consider song that is very popular among kpop fans but flop on south korea as a hit ?

  • Lol, might be an unpopular opinion in this thread but it’s better to be popular in ur own country wherein you’d earn various money sources like modelling, acting, and CFs. This is the same for groups that is popular on one country alone, China or Japan.

Compare that to a “international hit” (lol) on a very niche subgenre in the music industry. If we’re talking international hits, you’d have to scale it up to the likes of Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, that are chart toppings on multiple countries even outside america and even on charts that is dominated by K-pop.

Don’t think any other group besides blackpink and bts can be competitive on the landscape of “international”.

  • Sis, remember MAMA2019 and how they blurred Blackpink's picture from the nominees? If that ain't disrespect and getting ignored I don't know what it.

Come on. When BTS debuted they had more hiphop/though kind of songs. Their main supporters were overseas fans. RM and Suga were constantly the subject of underground rappers criticizing them and making fun of them for choosing the idol path. They only started having a more significant k-army when they changed their concept/image. This is down kpop history

You should have made it clear what you were talking about then because imo it was weird to pretend Kill this love as a comeback got ignored in Korea. And I don't know but much about that thing, I thought it was due to YG and Mnet fighting.

I also don't see how RM and Suga receiveing critics from underground rappers has a link with how their songs were received by Korean GP.

    You're mixing everything.

  • God's Menu and Back Door basically changed Stray Kids' career to a tremendous growth were they are coming for 2 billion streams on Spotify until the end of the year, are the second most popular K-pop boygroup on Youtube nowdays, can sell over a million in the first month of sales with an album, has over 5 million monthly listeners on Spotify and because of the size of their fandom, since the second half of last year, they are getting plenty of Brand/CF deals inside and outside korea and solo opportunies that they didn't have before, also having the potential to do good worldwide tours in the future.

I don't know If they are hits based of people's standards, but they definitely did to Stray Kids career what hits are supposed to do to artists' careers.

  • No '-'

A hit is a song who make some noise

so unless people in the country were this song did well internationally really know the song , it's not a hit

A hit isn't just a few hundreds of people who are a niche of kpop fans just streaming a song hard

so i find this kinda dumb when people call some songs an international hit '-'

an international hit are songs like Gangnam styles or Dynamite, some songs who really made a noise among international people and not just among international kpop fans '-'

  • jfc who cares?

How many times does it need to be explained that even in Korea, kpop is not a popular genre and most groups are only going to achieve mild success on the charts?

  • Absolutely, a hit is any song that gets popular amongst a group of people. For example I don't listen to country music and may think "this country artist isn't popular cause they don't chart on the main billboard chart". That's only because I'm not in their world, its a hit amongst then and that's all that matters. I find kpop stans put too much importance on GP hits when most people who get one fall off afterwards and fandom is more important anyway there the reason groups despite not charting well can afford to keep going.

  • - they would listen to bp but not vote : Kill this love won 2 music shows when previously they won 11 (DDDD) .

Wasn't it simply because it was released basically at the same time as Boy with Luv?

I just don't understand your logic. For instance you mentioned Coachella as something that made Koreans paid attention to Blackpink again but it happened in April 2019 so during Kill this love comeback. But anyway, ok, if you say so, I am not going to pretend I know much about BP. I was simply surprised about your statement about Kill this love.

As for BTS, i honestly don't think it's right for me to educate you on this since you seem to be an army. You should ask a fellow "senior" army about this. but kpop stans who have been here before 2018 will tell you about it too.

I know very well that BTS faced many hardships. My point was not to deny that but to say that, based on what I know, I disagree with the whole " BTS were nugu and ignored in Korea and only started to grow in popularity there when they got popular internationally" .

My impression is that you basically equal Korean GP with Korean Kpop fans and with Korean music industry, and that puzzles me.

  • What you’re saying is true.

BTS weren’t nugus before they got big internationally. They were growing steadily in both the local and international scenes. They had songs charting well on kcharts. It’s their achievements that were not publicized by the kmedia that made BTS seem unpopular

I remember Korean reactors getting surprised when they realize Spring day was sung by BTS. They knew the songs but they just weren’t aware of the acts behind it

yeah, i mean BTS won their first daesangs for artist and album in 2016 at MAMA and MMA. That was before what i would say was the first step of their proper international boom which was dna in late 2017.
