A lot of Kpop fans rn seems to think Shinee was a top groups, but iirc during 2nd gen/early 3rd gen era most fans considered them as an 'upper-tier-but-not-top-tier' group lol. Basically, a group right below top tier, not in the same league as an actual top groups from 2nd gen like TVXQ, SNSD, SUJU, Bigbang.

EXO was the top group until 2017 though. Won't comment on TWICE since Blinks and onces will fight, and I'm not a 2nd gen stan so I don't know much about 2ne1.

That's why the questions marks are there. From my perspective I never hear about them as if they were SNSD or Wonder Girls level, but that they were definitely up there. Kind of in the "successful but not quite top tier" category

Well it depends on what OP wants to consider a top group.
KARA would fall among the groups OP mentioned. They were popular for sure and Mister was a national hit but they had more popularity among their Japanese career rather than Korea post Mister.
SISTAR was a digital monster but physicals never matched it hence why they were never included in the TOP GROUPS chat like SNSD.

Twice were considered /the NGG/ for a while
EXO was the most dominating 3rd gen bg until late 2017/early 2018
2ne1 had amazing digitals, even beating SNSD at this category sometimes
And to answer OP: I'd say Monsta X, Miss A, 4minute annnd as much as it pains me to admit this, F(x).

As in top group overall or just gender based?
I dont think there was a consistent, clear top group before BTS. From boy groups it was between Big Bang and EXO before BTS took over. And if we add girl groups, it gets even messier. Maybe only Big Bang was dominant enough with massive digitals and decent physicals for a while?

Kara members are like richest gg members from their gen bcoz they toured well and had less members to share.
And had cfs both in japan and korea and a great contract, where they shared 50% profit on albums, which they sold a lot.

There can only be one THE top group at the same time, by definition. So either the top group was switching every year and it wasnt consistent or there was very limited amount of top groups. Looking at stats and what people are saying, there were a lot of competitors for the top group in 2nd gen, so it wasnt very clear who was THE top one.
SNSD had #1 album in 2010 and two songs in yearly digital top 10, so we can call them THE top group for that year pretty clearly, especially adding their Japanese success.
Theres really no need to look for agendas where they dont exist.

Yeah but it also went beyond just music sales and spread to other fields which was a massive reason why SNSD was so dominant.
They shit ton of cfs, had the highest ratings Any time they were on TV, topped surveys/polls, members had huge popularity including 2 it girls, big tours, represented Korea at events, invited to shows abroad, even regularly made national news just for CBs announcements. They were so well rounded they were a mini kpop industry within themselves

if we are talking about being nr1 we don't have many groups that was top groups but maybe never nr 1. 2NE1 was a top group for sure, but maybe always nr2 after Girls' Generation. So we maybe only have had two top groups among the girl groups, Twice and Girls' Generation. Yeah yeah, we can maybe say BP and Red Velvet at some point of the time.

2010 Miss A had biggest hit. Bb had best digitals too. 2011 belonged to beast/Highlight with 2 massive hits and good sales. And won rightfully MMA artist of year. 2012 belonged to BB and sistar. Suzy alone overshadowed whole Kpop and any IT girl. Psy rocked that year.
Unless someone topped all three at same time, there was no particular group at top year after year
And cultural impact is subjective term. For artist touring, sales matter.

And then i guess its bb bcos they had best touring stats to backup along with digitals, even their physicals weren't the best. They started having hits in 2005 and were getting in 2016 as well as in 2018.
I guess overall they had best touring, digitals of 2nd gen along with gp fame. So they top 2 out of the 3 criterias. I like to go with numbers than subjective opinions of fans..
