Tarzzan is overhated

  • is tarzzan overhated? 31

    1. He is overhated (15) 48%
    2. He is hated just enough (8) 26%
    3. He is not hated enough (8) 26%

Now I won't pretend that I haven't made my fair share of jokes against Tarzzan being cringe, which I stand by, but I do feel he receives a lot more hate/criticism than is deserved. So just wondering what AKPers think.

  • I don't have much of an opinion on that specifically as I don't see much related to him

But just in general kpop stans can never be normal about anything. They can't just not like/criticize, they HAVE to be overly-parasocial and obsessively upset about it

  • Tarzzan is actually a wholesome and handsome person. There’s some valid criticism, but it turned into an opportunity for snarkers to jump on. Those snarkers have said things that are even more insensitive and offensive than anything Tarzzan did.

People just have a cynical outlook on ADP, and it’s getting ridiculous how the haters project K-drama character archetypes onto the members. They’re trying to portray all of the members except Youngseo as bullies, going as far as to exaggerate a storyline about them bullying her for wearing pink. Any rational person would see that as playful teasing.

So what if Annie is chaebol? As long as she’s not using her influence to cause harm to others, there’s no issue about it. There’s not even any proof that she used her affluence and connections to get awards and accomplishments. It’s just people passing off their speculations as facts.

Well this is a cultural thing chaebols and Korea's history. People in the west just think rich kid. To get why many dislike this you have to know why Koreans hate chaebols. Iv no issues with her debuting but I get it.

  • I don't even understand the hate very well

People got very angry about the pants for some reason

I think the main criticism among some western fans is that he is "black fishing" in the sense that he's using sterotypical black traits and >

imagery taken from 00s+ popular rap and hip hop culture and using it as a signifier to portray a certain character that is very far from his own lived experiences or his own authentic character.

  • My problem is that he called himself Tarzzan when he's more like an off-brand George of the Jungle.

  • everybody is free is like or dislike or even hate someone for whatever reason they want...it's free will after all

the question is when the "hatred" exceeds what is legal to the point of bullying

like I have no problems with people saying I dislike Tarzzan or even I hate Tarzzan

the line I draw is when it goes further and becomes like death threats or the like...

I don't have Social Media so I don't know the extent of the hatred but as long as it doesn't exceed that line then it's all fair game no?

  • I think people are overdoing it because every action he does gets overanalyzed . However, I think it's the price a person pays when their gimmick is considered mocking a culture. Of course there's a fine line in kpop in how much they can use of certain cultures, but I think Tarzzan crosses it. It doesn't seem like him or TBL are listening to the valid complaints, so I can see why people are angry about it.

However, I think the part that gets lost in the discussion is people not actually caring and using it to weaponize hate for the group. We've seen it with both him and Kiss of Life. With the latter it got to the point where it feels like people don't actually care about their moment, and more so to weaponize hate for the group. Plus, people know easy way to go viral is to attack people in cultural appropriation controversy

TBL and Tarzzan would be smart to tone it down because I think he's holding them back for potential in the west.

  • sometimes i think they’re just dragging them for dumb engagement and likes, especially on X. like congrats, one of their achievements is getting brownie points from other k-pop fans

I don't know if you've noticed this, but social media has changed drastically. When people leave comments or replies, they leave snarky punchlines to get engagement, but there's no detailed commentary of anything beyond that. There's no real effort to connect anyone or anything.

  • He's going to end up being huge in Korea. I can feel it on my bones and it's going to be your fault. All that hate without the boycotting is just engagement and recognition.

Also he's sticking to his style because it's giving him fashion points in Korea. If he sticks to it then the fanboys will start copying him soon. He might be the next fashun (corsistol style) icon.

  • He's a good guy.

The fan ran out of time during the call. Tarzzan couldn't say much, but he still made sure to mention NewJeans members are "good kids." This was during a time when NewJeans faced so much scrutiny and backlash. Tarzzan chose to stand with them nonetheless! :holding-back-tears:

Blame Elon Musk’s poorly thought out changes to X. He wanted to get rid of bots, but allowing people to earn money from tweets resulted in an exponential rise in bot accounts and people from random parts of the world stirring controversy just to grift and earn money.

That's a big part of it.

I've seen this behavior on TikTok as well. There's often at least one snarky comment even when the video itself is supposed to be fun and wholesome. Thing is... These commenters don't even make money from it. They're just desperate for likes.

  • Yes and it's interesting how people are so bothered by his "existence" as if he is pointing a gun at everybody's head to keep updated about him or the group he is part of.

im gonna assume youre white that thinks racism is not a thing at all. Also isnt it obvious that this guy was used as a gimmick from the company to gain some attention in their debut? im not gonna be surprise if he become more korean-esque as time goes by.

Assumed wrong about my opinion on racism.

Kinda ridiculous your comment about this, but that says more about you than about me.

I actually wanted to ask something.

Why we never read a topic about Kiss of Life asking: "KIOF is overhated?"

Like, I know it's not just one member, it was the whole group, but it's not like everyone hate ADP because of Tarzzan. Most people only hate Tarzzan, and that's fair enough.

This guy doing CA for many years now and did other things as well, but now people want to act as if the hate is forced or too much.

No, it's just enough. Imo, ADP as a group and Tarzzan as well got a free pass, because they're popular. I mean, KCon LA removed KIOF, but they didn't do the same with ADP. Why?

In my eyes, both are the same. The only difference is that KIOF did it as a whole, and in ADP it's just 1 member.

And people actually fall for this PR nonsense. Like, come on now.

  • I think people were overdoing the KIOF hate because I'm unsure if people actually cared for topic. It feels people know hating on them goes viral, so they continue to do it. I guess for the most part things cooled down because I don't see them talked about much these days. I guess the same could be done about Tarzzan instead of making posts about him. People need to realize negative posts about him only gives him and the group more visibility.

I think with most things in kpop popularity matters. KIOF doesn't have a big enough fanbase to survive the lashings from kpop fans. Tarzzan being just one member in a popular group means they'll be okay. It's why idols in popular groups don't get real backlash for things. I don't think he got a free pass because unsure if his antics will harm the group's popularity among western kpop fans.

Kcon thing was more due to pressure from fans. However, kcon as an institution had some racist moments like a job requirement said Asian and white people only.

Lastly, I think the weight of the issues is very case by case for people. Personally, I think what Tarzzan is doing is damaging, and puts a bad image of what people think of black people. There were many knetz comments how they perceive that's how black people act, which is damaging. The Kiss of Life moment is similar on that level for how it impacted how people may have black and latino people.
