Do you think a 4th/5th Gen GG will ever reach the international heights of BP or Twice?
-
-
-
By international heights you are talking about stadiums concerts in several countries even outside of Asia?
Tbh I see no gg having such huge fandoms as BP and Twice even in their early years.
If I'm not mistaken in their third year they were already touring for a +400k attendance, no? Like we could feel how they were big fandom wise since the beginning of their careers and tbh I don't feel it with others ggs even in this gen.
Could it be possible? Sure, but I think BP and Twice will be the top ggs touring wise for some time or forever.
-
Babymonster needs better songs, but YG is not giving them better songs
KoF maybe has a potential but it is still too early to say
Illit - depends on Hybe Payola level
New jeans- Well I don’t have to say anything about them
Lsf- if they will succeed after coachella fiasco then they might have chance, if not no
Gidle - they are in their 6th year and no longer relevant internationally
The only true answer would be Stray Kids but they are boy group!
-
No.
The K-pop bubble is deflating. The international teenagers that grew up during that bubble are now older, and it doesn't look like they're being replaced effectively by the next generation of teenagers. The 1st and 2nd gen groups managed to make a strong foothold in Asia, and K-pop will be able to reliably tap into that market in the future. This isn't a slight against 3rd gen by saying that they couldn't create a foothold for later gens or against 4th gen by saying that they can't live up to 3rd gen, but it's very difficult to penetrate the west. It takes continuous effort and continuous bops and a population that continues to be there each generation. And you really only see that with Latin pop in America and American pop in the rest of the west.
However, K-pop, like J-pop, will have a niche now. Songs will go viral due to short form video platforms like TikTok. Things will be normalize back, and we'll see K-pop return back to its true level.
-
Twice? Should be doable by a few a groups at least like maybe new jeans, aespa. I think once the new gen groups start touring in earnest they should also be able to tour like Twice. Not sure why people think otherwise. Twice themselves didn’t start touring this big until later in the career.
And if they’re not able to do it because kpop deflates twice themselves won’t be able to have a tour like that either again.
BP tbh are a weird case where the number of releases and popularity don’t have correlation so who really knows how to compare BP with others lol.
-
I predict non-kpop groups will take over, XG, Katseye or BINI, the newcomers in the scene gaining rep, those type of groups. K-pop lost its touch a bit.

Since their pop vocal songs aren’t hitting like kpop groups songs! They should stick to hip hop, and they will definitely become extremely big
Bini are cool too, but kpop stans won’t support them unfortunately!
Katseye are going nowhere with that management! Did you even heard their latest song touch? That MV budget was like 5 dollars
-
-
NewJeans will rather easily eclipse their predecessors.
Nobody else has a shot after them.
Maybe 6th generation will produce the next unstoppable force.

yea I think it may be too early to tell. Twice didn't start to hit it big in Latin America until as of late. I saw them live in Mexico City and I think they had over 100k attendees over two days which is pretty impressive. Honestly, the show was kinda meh though lol. the girlies seem to be a bit over it nowadays.

i dunno I think fin and Bbymon have a real shot. Fin honestly lost a lot of momentum but can recover. If you look at just music released this year, there's not much to separate aespa, bbymon, NJ, fin internationally. I'm not including Illit bc they are really new and could just be one hit wonders bc Magnetic is that good.
-
I actually think yes. Kpop is breaking out in many parts of the world and getting bigger each year like Latin America, and becoming mainstream in SEA, so yes they will be matching, just like album sales, streams, etc..
The impact will be different though, it will be less impactful or impressive.
-

Well these are newcomers for a reason, they are a bit slow to breakout without full blown support that kpop groups get.
XG, Bini spent their time gathering rich enough fan base, and now they have a solid roar everywhere.
Katseye is starting, Touch just did them wonders. Well Katseye, they have great presence, just strong like pop girls. They need songs more than 3 minutes. Hyfen really haven't started promoting them full force, but Touch is brining the result. A low budget but well executed MVs are not bad sometimes.

I think what It's needed for the current girlgroups is to build an audience up in LATAM, Europe and Oceania where some of their markets are among the biggest in the world, but somehow most of the current companies pay these regions dust.
They won't match TWICE's and much less BLACKPINK touring power If their popularity remain focused in Asia and US to a lesser extent.

I have looked at the international numbers more than anyone here, outside of some users in the digital thread.
NewJeans is far ahead their peers by every metric out there. Individual songs had stronger Spotify numbers than their recent entries, but as an overall artist, they are way ahead of the pack, and half of those songs were targeted towards Japan anyway. Nobody else is making any noise with their Jpop songs.
I don't see anyone talking about how aespa's Jpop song is charting.
If any group makes a run internationally other than NewJeans, it won't be a group that has already debuted

again, talking strictly about music released this year. Can't deny this ador/hybe fallout has hit all hybe GG negatively, except for NJ domestically. But if NJ is as popular as you say, their new songs should have had more impact internationally, which doesn't seem to be the case. it be great if they did tour more, perhaps we'll have to wait until 2025 when they announce their world tour to see. again, it's too early to say as most of these groups have had little to no concerts internationally to speak of.

They released 4 songs, 2 of which were marketed to and promoted in Japan. They are Jpop songs, no matter how much their detractors suddenly want to over analyze how much of the song is in Japanese, as if they're the first group ever to have a Jpop song that wasn't 100% in Japanese.
They are the #1 girl group on Spotify, and by year end, it will end a years long streak of BLACKPINK closing the year as the top group.
Let me reiterate they've only released 4 new songs. That means their discography had incredible reach and longevity, far surpassing their peers.
They have more career Spotify streams than aespa and IVE combined. Something I've said enough times for my phone to remember it.
NewJeans have done all this with ADOR making no concerted effort to promote in the West. When they do, we will really see their power.

Twice never promoted in Europe/LATAM so
And BP only promo was PFW.
There are much more kpop event overseas nowadays, LATAM is easier but the Europe isn’t an easy market to break.
The reason why BP/Twice had a big fanbase is because they didn’t have too much competition, HYBE is invading kpop with its first GG+BIG3 GG, and now even GG from mid-tier/nugu company are doing great. They all share more or less the same demographic while you’ll barely see onces stanning BP and vice versa.

I don't care that 100k rabid tokkis death stream ditto and OMG every day.
I think they'll continue to do well and will be the most popular GG in Korea for the foreseeable future. But we're talking about international success here.

I think it’s LSFM

Tbh it’s very hard to say what New Jeans popularity is since they haven’t toured lol. Maybe they’ll have a huge tour or maybe they’ll be a dud who knows until it happens. For now one group that’s not even part of the discussion is new jeans since they have not even begun touring properly.
-
I think it’s LSFM
lol meant fim, but it autocorrects to fin.

It's 4 songs. 4. 2 of them were Jpop releases targeted and promoted almost exclusively in Japan.
Stop doomposting and start using common sense.
If you think fans alone can keep an artist's songs on top of Spotify for an entire year, and it's not the general public hooked on their music, I don't see why you bothered with this thread. Your confirmation bias reigns supreme regardless
Also, they are the top girl group in Spotify in 2024. So...your argument is what exactly?

i just think BP are on a whole other level. If they released new music today, no matter the language, it would not drop over 50% in terms of streams.
-
How Sweet is definitely doing worse than Easy/Smart, Supernova/Armageddon but still doing way better than Twice, IVE, (G)I-DLE last singles on spotify. It's a only a Single album too, i would be more concerned if it was an EP or full album.
Full album main single will be really important to assess NJ international success future
-
I think the problem is Kpop companies are churning out too many Kpop groups.
In the past, you had less competition, and the older groups remained on the 7 year cycle. The older group got shelved.
With the proliferation of streaming, older groups are still relevant, and they don't give up their spots like before.
Then there is the phenomena of regionalization. With international members joining Kpop groups, certain groups perform better in places like SEA, Japan, China, etc.
The rise of social media and its algorithms. Once you fall for a group, social media like reels and tiktok keeps you in a bubble.
The down time between song releases decreases the anticipation for a comeback, and it can make listeners fall into fatigue from listening to Kpop.
I'm sure there are more reasons, but I think this is my reasoning as to why the newer gen girl groups are having a hard time enjoying universal success like Twice & BP.
-

Oh yes, because what they've done is perfectly normal. Business as usual. Should be easy peasy to recreate.
Don't kid yourself.
NewJeans will rather easily eclipse their predecessors.
Nobody else has a shot after them.
Maybe 6th generation will produce the next unstoppable force.
NewJeans? Got invited to one stadium show outside of Asia. Got downsized and then cancelled completely, rather easily. Great track record.
-
-
In general I think kpop have peaked, so my guess is that it will go down hill a bit from here, but that don't mean we will not have groups that will be popular.
As I have said many times, I don't think "generations" don't really fill any meaning today, but if we go with my count that the 4th generation girlgroups is about half way in and we have maybe 2-3 years left before the 5th generation start means we have maybe 8 years before the 5th generation is over, so plenty of time left to get a couple of very popular groups yet.
-

Not normal but not “can’t be recreated” either the top groups of the new gens should be able to re create it.
It’s not say a record by BTS that will not be ever matched in the foreseeable future. Twice performed like a top group and other top groups in future generation will be able to match it.
Like I said twice themselves reached superstardom in touring later on in their career, I’m sure in five years we will have a comprehensive idea of the top groups of 4th gen and they will indeed be doing similar to twice. No doubt about it.
-

May I ask why you have no doubt about it? When only a small handful of Kpop girl groups have ever toured in stadiums at all, and literally only two have done it outside of Korea & Japan? It just seems to be that your confidence is rather unwarranted. Especially when some of these "top" 4th gen groups are still touring much smaller venues than Twice ever did, several years into their careers?
