Ain't lack of chances for smaller groups to perform during award shows kind of... become severe?

I remember that in the past some mid or even smaller groups would be invited to perform on award shows or on some end year festival

but these days it seems like only those who sell well, or at least chart well are invited...

what are those groups doing wrong to be stuck in Show Champion instead of going to award show?

Remember that DKZ performed at the MAMA awards this year, and I would consider them a "mid or even smaller" group.

Maybe they got an invite, but couldn't pay to fly the group + stylists/managers/backup dancers etc to Japan?

even new jeans didn't win anything at mama. i would feel like having to sit through hours of performance for a 2 minute stage an no awards wouldnt be fun for most groups.

Does this have something to do with the "everyone needs to get a made up token award" thing that's prevalent? If labels would normalize sending their groups to perform without requiring an award, maybe they would have a better chance to get invited.

I love Classy's songs and I also watched their survival show. The girls are pretty talented it's really sad that they can't perform on award shows. I think maybe most award shows only invite popular artists because they want groups who have huge support for the popularity and clout of their show. Moreover, there are many popular artists now and the shows have limited airtime they can't accommodate groups that have less popularity.

I would love to watch award shows in which 20-25 groups perform but just 8-10 get awards

also Kim Yuna was there, one guy from Forestella married her so it's a win win for MNet

DKZ won Road to MAMA voting

Tempest was nominated in new male artist category

JO1 is Japanese group, and MAMA was held in Japan so...

Classy should be on MBC Gayo end year festival, after all they were created through survival show broadcasted on MBC

Award shows are very expensive for groups and even in other countries it's typically only massively popular groups or successful who get to perform unless they're nominated. It's hard for acts outside of large labels to get attention.

I will say that one of the things missing from MAMA this year were the red carpet performers which is typically where you get your smaller up and coming groups to perform.

They only performed because they won a voting poll against Secret Number (I think?)

If not, they wouldn't even have this chance

Literally MAMA had to pit nugu groups against each other just to fight for 1 spot to perform

Even midtier groups aren't getting invites/or just aren't going. It's getting drastic.

STAYC wasn't even at MAMA. If those groups aren't going, what hope do nugu groups have.

MAMA to me was weird this year, this is the first time since debut that Ateez didnt' perform, was possibly NOT invited and didn't even win top 10 award, which they won consecutively since debut. I'm not getting in a tiff over it but this years MAMA simply made no sense. Smaller groups probably can't make the budget to go to another country to perform, but it would be nice if they could be noticed more. I guess thats' what I get for loving NUGU's they never appear/get anything, but I still love them anyway.

Nobody is answering my question and most seem to assume they just didn't get an invite. HOW DO YOU KNOW??? With all the travel restrictions posed by COVID not to mention the economic effects, I don't think we can just assume it was because they didn't get an invite.
