RE: Are there any other girl groups who are as passionate about music as G(I)dle?

  • hmm this is interesting to me because I am sure there are female idols that could have untapped potential in writing/producing, but can't really show it due to sexism.

Because of this, speculation can only take you so far. Because there might be female idols who have the passion for it, but can't really display it.

  • I think passion shows when u are performing

those who perform like its their last day are the most passionate ones imo

But the performance can also be related to dance (if u have a choreo) more than music. And we know that some idols are more passionate about performance or dance than music (and it's not a problem at all).

If you really love something, you have to know how to let go.

  • I think it’s very strange and a really passive aggressive way to talk about other gg by implying they’re not passionate about their music because they don’t write or produce it.

It’s giving pick me girl energy.

Creating music is a nice to have but it doesn’t mean someone is not an artist or interested in their art because they didn’t, otherwise we’d be out here arguing that the lead mezzo soprano at the Met isn’t passionate about music because she didn’t write the aria in the opera and the virtuoso violinist is not passionate about music because he didn’t write the Prokofiev piece he’s playing on his Stradivarius. Yes, these are ludicrous examples but I just don’t understand this Western obsession with putting down singers who don’t write their own music.

Songwriting and producing is a job for a reason.

It’s fantastic that IDLE write and produce their materials in an industry where women still struggle for songwriting and producing opportunities and access but I don’t understand the constant need to shade other groups and women around it.

Why not just praise it on its own?

  • I think that anon OP is confusing creatively for passion.

Being involved in creating music is one thing but that isn't the end all be of passion for music. What about those who always sing perfectly? Or those that always dance with their all? What about those that try something new instead of sticking with tried and generic formula?

If you want passion: SNSD got together after 5 years of no group activity and all members could easily have continued their solo careers without giving a second a thought to group work. But they still came back and did everything as if they were back in their prime. Individually members like Taeyeon and Hyoyeon are already considered the best in their fields of singing and dancing and still do new things on stage, most of them have written lyrics for both solo and group, Hyoyeon and Tiffany co produce their solo music,

  • But the performance can also be related to dance (if u have a choreo) more than music. And we know that some idols are more passionate about performance or dance than music (and it's not a problem at all).

i see kpop as an composite (mixed) art

The reason why I said performance is because every idols perform

but we only have some idols producing, i think its possible that idols can still have passion for music without writing or producing music. Because they are still singing to a music, dancing to a music, they are expressing music in whatever medium or talent they have. And that is shown through performance.

About writing and producing that is more so about one having creative control over their music. But yeah I would agree with idols who produce their music having the most passion. Most people think they are provided with creative freedom easily because company favours them or sth but in fact they have actually fought for it. People think it as so easy when in fact these idols produce countless songs to get approved to release it.

  • People wont agree but even as a nonfan I think of Twice

The way they crush multiple comebacks year after year and still look so enthusiastic in every performance.

  • hmmmm...not to answer the question per se since lots of others have answered it but to my knowledge soyeon has written all of Gidle's title tracks (or least a large majority of them)

I guess my question would be has any other group male or female had one (or more members) write the majority of the title tracks (TT only not including bsides)

  • i think its possible that idols can still have passion for music without writing or producing music.

Yes i'm agree you can express your passion in different forms, for example some idols are not credited on their song but like to play instrument on their Vlive with their fans, or speak about music, improve vocals, studying rap ...

Performance are for me more related to dance or the way you control the stage for me it's something related to music but not necessarily. For example a play or a magic show, the stage presence is also important but in another aspect and it is not related to the music.

For me kpop idols all have different passion or reason for choosing this path and some likes focus mainly on one aspect, others on several. Some also like other industry-related aspects like fashion, acting ...

I think it's not insulting to say that there are idols more passionate and invested in music than others, or to say that some people prefer dance to music. And on the contrary, for me it's even rather naive to think that in an industry like kpop which touches different fields and art to think that all idols are passionate about music. We just have to go back to the story of how each idol debuted to sometimes understand their real motivation or aspiration.

If you really love something, you have to know how to let go.

I think technically Pristin? Not that it ended too well for them.

  • really I don't much about the group

how many TT were released and did the member(s) write for all/majority of them?

Seungyeon wrote/composed Wee Woo, their first Title

Roa and Seungyeon wrote and Rena composed Black Widow, their next one

Roa and Seungyeon wrote and Seungyeon got a tertiary composer credit for We Like

After that they had no more titles. They had a subunit that had none of their group compsing.

  • passion is a really weird all encompassing term.

The song writing process isn't the end all be all for passion about music.

Is the idol that does a million covers less passionate than the one who puts pen to paper?

Is the idol who knows how to play the guitar more passionate than the one who spends days training their vocals to be pitch perfect?

Even amoung i-dle's song making trio, their passion isn't identical.

Soyeon will freely write lyrics for anything regardless if the composition is hers or not.

Yuqi in contrast seems to care less about lyrics than she does composing.

I wouldn't say either is less passionate about music.

  • It's not really how they work. The songs that are credited with Yuqi's or Minnie's music and Soyeon's lyrics, it's not because Minnie or Yuqi don't care about lyrics. They try to be thematically consistent within an album which means they sometimes change the lyrics that were originally written if they don't match the mood/concept they're going with.

And because Soyeon is the kind of girl who pens lyrics all the time, she must have a huge pool of unused lyrics they can tap into when needed. Or she can write new ones pretty quickly.

Plus let's not forget that Yuqi and Minnie are not Korean, so it doesn't come to them naturally to write songs in Korean. They sure can do songs in English (and they did; see Change, which is entirely in English except for Soyeon's rap) but they don't want to do too many of them.
