In the 90s to the middle of the 2000s they were one of the most famouse companies in Japan with many of the most known JPop-acts. Than they started to create tons of sub-lables, work woth other companies, debuted more and more artists, stoped promoting their artists and in 2020 they almost went bankrupt and people rumored they only didn't got bankrupt cause they have a contract to one of the most famouse Japanese boygroups (who debuted in 2020).
And thats something that could easily happen to companies with too many artists (and when they co-produce for other companies or share artist-work from other companies/countries etc.) and most people actually don't want that stuff like this happens, cause this could in the worst case mean that the company of their faves could close down (and in the case of Avex, why the fuck do they have 100+ trainees when they almost went bankrupt... if I would be the companie's boss I would kick most of the trainees and disband groups who make no money)

Dream is peaking too, getting huge, i think they own the teen demo in Korea, no need to cut their legs from under them.

Why on earth would sm be in a hurry to debut new bgs?

They had a lot more artists but SHINHWA left SM many years ago. H.O.T is also disbanded and only Kangta is still under SM, Traxx left SM too some years ago (apparently not disbanded, but we never heard of Traxx again. They originaly left cause they were pissed for how SM used to treat them), than SM also had some solo-ists as like Penomeco but he left SM by now (I remember he said he was unhappy with SM and left cause of that) and than there is also that some people left EXO. And we also don't know whats even going up with WayV since it's been over a year since we last heard of Lucas.
I'm not too sure with female artists, but I know that SNSD lost some member, f(x) is disbanded (if I'm not mistaken only Luna is still signed with SM) and than SM used to have a group called S.E.S, but thats it from what I know. Also from the sublables that SM has, IDK who's signed to it right now to know if anyone has left there.
I kind of like that they're doing more with their existing artists. Remember when it was kind of a joke that SNSD never got individual solos? Now, we've had tons of solos like Changmin's Devil, Seulgi's 28 Reasons, Taeyeon, Onew, Key, Chen, Xiumin, Kangta, Hyo, Ryeowook, probably some others I'm not thinking of in there. Collabs like BoA and Xin remaking Better, Taeyong and Wonstein's Love Theory, GoT's Step Back.
They're not perfect by a long stretch, but there's still a lot that can be done with their existing artists.
Because they're not worried about debut date. It's about the audience. NCT Dream has a teen/young adult audience. Why should they just pretend that doesn't exist because something as dumb as debut date?
"Oh sorry, but your main demographic is 15-23 year olds which is the EXACT market we really want to hit because they have spending power... oh but it says here you debuted in 2016 and this other group debuted in 2018. Guess you just don't count!"
and I don't even consider them 4th gen... but they do target the same audience as 4th gen groups. like that doesn't change just because they debuted in 2016 and Stray Kids debuted in 2018 and TXT in 2019.
I mean no one is going to argue that itzy isn't aiming for the same audience as Le Sserafim for instance even though there's even more years between them and Dream and Stray Kids.

Mostly it seems to be people not liking the music of the current most popular SM groups. They want a new group because they don’t like NCT or aespa’s music.
But the wild thing to me is all these people moaning about the music SM used to make when TVXQ, SuJu, Shinee and EXO are right there, releasing music as groups and soloists (obvs Shinee and EXO aren’t releasing this hot second but did in the past year.) There’s pretty much every flavor you can think of in bg already at your fingertips, including the classic SM style, plus two successful gg.
And honestly you can just drag your happy ass over to the NCT 127 Killing Voice episode and see exactly that classic SM style in the bsides we’ve all been talking about for years. (I was watching a reaction video where some guys were like “is this a SM group? Cuz they have that SM harmonies thing going.” )
