Do you guys ever wonder if companies assign idols their personalities?

I'm sure they have "on camera" personas, but I don't think it's too far from the truth of their personalities.

I mean that they could be exaggerating parts of their personality, but that's still part of them.

It's way too hard to fake a personality consistently for years at a time. You'd slip up at some point.

So, no, I don't think the company has that much to do with it.

I think they definitely do. I remember 2nd generation idols openly admitted to being assigned personality at debut. I don't think idol companies would stop doing that when it's proved so successful for them. Specifically, what's known as the 4D idol personality. Evil maknae is another one.

yes they do. I remember when Jin confessed that the company had once assigned him a persona that was completely opposite to his real personality.

SM is proven to do this at times with Jaehyun getting given the "silent mysterious" type. Super Junior was also given types but I feel SM just gave up on them I think most companies give up on enforcing the fake persona after a while

Of course they do.

If the idols get successful or after a while. Some idols may brake away or the companies do not care that much. But at debute its common. Sometimes they even change it from comeback to comeback, if they think it fits better the different concept.

No need to pretend it's not the companies who decide what is on the menu.

Of course they do, everyone does it too with their jobs. You dont behave the same way to your boss and customers the same way you behave to your brothers and sisters at home. Obviously it is getting more difficult to fake it the more hours you spend on public eyes but first 2 years during debut? Heck yeah, every idols do it, this is not some mini projects from school, this is a million dollars project from a large entertainment industry, there is definitely some pragmatism in their planning.

Yes archetypes are a common thing in kpop. Companies have their own archetypes too. For a long time in the kpop community this was the perception: SM idols have royal, cold and aloof persona, JYP idols are personable and down to earth, charming next door types and YG idols are "edgy". You are spot on for the groups you mentioned. Doesn't mean the image is contrived or less authentic but it's sort of a characterstic of an idol group. Think of Lana Del Rey or Lady Gaga donning a persona, public figures tend to have it.

I think many idols had said they were given a personality by the company. I quite remember Jin and Heechul telling it. Although i think true personality will come out after rookie years.

In BTS, for example, Jin had to portray some cold mysterious beauty and only years later he became funny clown, comedian, creative MC and lover of weird jokes he is now.

It's also known that Kook has been wanting to build up muscles since forever but bighit wanted for him to keep his image of sweet innocent pure maknae.

Bighit also puts Hoseok in a box a lot. For example, creative director of BTS (he works with Lesserafim now) said this in interview "j-hope has so much energy that he has that mysterious power to brightening up everyone around him. he pulls off colorful and fun concepts really well" while Hoseok's works outside of group like Airplane and Blue Side (but even in group too, cause Boy Meets Evil exists) tells very clearly that "fun and colorful" is just one side of his multilayered personality. Also god bless his insta which shows more than anything with its aesthetics that he is very far from this "fun and colorful" box bighit has been putting him in for years.

Yeah, I think they do, though it can change over time. I think I watched something where Joy was happy when Yeri joined so she didn't have to do the cute maknae thing all the time. Also there was one where Olivia Hye was caught being cute when she didn't realise she was being filmed.
