What do you guys think of generations?

people like to jump to the next gen because the current 3rd gen is too dominate so their new faves have to claim to be best 4th gen xxx or first 4th gen xxx

they're stupid and cause fanwars.

Honestly, for me It wouldnt exist

But since It does and theres nothing I cant do, I just go with the flow

I will be completely honest, I don't really care about generations but I can see difference between each generation. Music, dressing style, hairstyle, choreography, lyrics....basically everything is different in each generation and it was noticeable even to me who had no idea about this generation thing when I just joined kpop.

I only care that my faves aka EXO are credited as group which started 3rd generation

For me personally, second gen will always remain iconic as that was the era I got into K pop, but I get annoyed at the constant comparisons between them.

I think generations are stupid way to lock out active old gen groups from the discussions.

it makes sense until the third but i think a lot of people are jumping the gun with the fourth generation and trying too hard to analyse the differences between the 3rd and 4th

i do think it's kinda cool that there are generations? because there are differences, musically and visually, between gens. but i'm not into the whole "first of this gen to do this thing!" and all of the dumb achievements people have created using the generation divide

It is not a functional concept. Like how the hell are you telling me Gidle and Itzy are the same generation as NMIXX, Kepler or Lesserafim?

There's no inherent harm in generations. I think most people would agree that S.E.S., Girls' Generation, Red Velvet and aespa debuted in different scenarios and belong in different generations. The problem starts when K-pop fans are too obsessed with achievements and want to have their own generation / gatekeep others from having theirs / gatekeep others from joining their own. Western pop stans are also obsessed with achievements, but they usually split in decades, not generations.

But there are other genres that have generations, also called waves. Progressive rock has proto-prog (wave 0), prog (wave 1), neo-prog (wave 2) and the 2nd generation of neo-prog (wave 3). Punk rock has 2 waves. Heavy metal has 2 waves. Emo has 4 waves. But I think people stopped counting / caring when they split in sub / derivative genres or left the mainstream.

For they are just categories, really gray categories.

I do think there are differences, early 3rd gen ggs can be classified as cute whilst 2 gen ggs had more of a sexy vibe, but at the end of the day they're still kpop groups. So I just use them as guides, not as brick walls

Unlike something like video games where generations are determined by the introduction of new technology, for something like music, the lines of definition are much more grey and because people get so overly invested in kpop it turns into a lot of arguments about when generations begin and end and who and what is included.

It reminds me a lot of comics... before I got into kpop, I was a comic book fan. There are four major eras for comics Golden, Silver, Bronze, and Modern Ages. When superhero films really took off in the late 00s, I remember people arguing that they needed to end the Modern Age and start a new age because of the the combination of new attention to comics and the push for representation and diversity in characters, but for many it just came down to want to draw a line between people who were fans growing up in the 70s-90s and people who became fans after the movies got popular. It was just about feeling different and special and superior.

This is how I look at it too. I think about Western music, specifically hip hop, and for example, if you are talking about the Golden Age of Hip Hop, you are trying talk about a specific style, attitude and characteristics, particularly compared to say Old School Hip Hop. They are very different and different again to today's hip hop (sure there are different styles even within those overarching themes - gangsta rap, party rap, etc but you get the point.)

I don't see a lot of dissimilarities from kpop to hip hop honestly, insomuch that there are still people who insist their era was the best and others are trash, or argue about groups on the fringes of an era or only listen to a specific era or arguing about what marks the end point of the era. The only thing I find strange is the insistence in kpop to be the first in a gen to do something vs being the first ever to do something (or even the second or third in terms of the whole industry).

I mean, sure I get bragging on your group and being excited when they accomplish something but sometimes it seems like the importance to be first outweighs anything else.

but jpop have sometime divided the generation of jpop artist debut by decade

for example the singer debut in 90's, 00's, 10's, 20'

which singer are the most popular in each decade

something like that but not this generation in kpop

I am not really into these generations thing and most of us don't even know how they properly work, we are just making assumptions on when a generation is starting and ending

I think that's applies for everything in kpop "first group to _________" so much importance is out on someone being first in something that in some cases it's comical

First million seller in this many years, first million seller in Korea, first million seller outside of Korea, first million seller in X generation, first gg/bg million seller, million seller on hanteo/gaon and so on. It's exhausting ngl
