Another reason why "Life's Too Short" by aespa is great

  • It's giving '90s, early 2000s girl group! Like TLC or Atomic Kitten! Girl groups back then had a mellow type of sound combined with very meaningful lyrics. I love it, so I'm glad it's getting a bit of a resurgence through aespa.

Ever since I heard "Lucid Dream," I knew aespa was capable of pulling off those '90s, early 2000s vibes. I hope they dive deeper into that for their next release. This was a great choice for an all-English song.

It didn't sound like the English version of a K-pop song. It just sounded like a '90s western girl group song. I'm not saying that's good or bad; it's just an observation.

  • What’s the first reason?

The first reason is that it's a cute song with meaningful lyrics. It's a different type of diss track that still has a warm and cozy feel to it. They switch back and forth between talking to the haters and reminding themselves what's important. That's really cool.

I believe someone mentioned in the Coachella discussion thread it sounds like a song for when you have campfire with friends.

That’s cool, thanks for sharing. I have to look up the lyrics then. But I noticed it seems to be an English song, right?

    Yes, it's entirely English.

This of course isn't studio quality, but here it is:

  • TLC is US-girl group canon, especially when it comes to crossover R'N'B/Pop. I heard of Atomic Kitten but not much of their music or people talking about them in my area.

I'm indifferent about the performance version of the song right now. I have to hear what the studio version sounds like among the other songs on the upcoming album.

I mentioned in a post that SME should draw inspiration specifically from the 2000's-forward for some Aespa material because Red Velvet has already taken great care of the 90's (examples:"Bad Boy", "Time Slip", "One of These Nights (De-Capo Version)". SHINee, EXO, and NCT have 90's inspired songs and throwbacks. Somebody has to do something different.

To my ear, sounds like some *Reggae guitar is "M.I.A." in the chorus. It would feel better than looping that same acoustic guitar riff throughout the majority of the song.

  • You always drop wisdom and knowledge!

It definitely does have reggae influence, especially during the chorus! The end of these lines, particularly:

    "Why would I ever stop?"

    "Any way that I want"

"If you like it or not"

The way they sing "stop," "want," and "not" has that going on.

Imagine if aespa had The Band Six, who worked with BLACKPINK, 2NE1, BIGBANG, and iKON, as their live band. The reggae guitar would be amazing.

  • That idea sounds practical, but working with Six is only going to look like SME's is really on YGE's areolas..something people have already claimed on SME.

SME has to "go their own way" in order to carve a legit lane for Aespa. The tweak that feels good to me, for the chorus, is take the first 4 counts of the guitar loop during the verse, but hit a Reggae lick like in the KARD track to make it a variation...something I don't recall SME being masterful or mindful of in their production.

They should still def. open, close, and play the full guitar loop after the peak of the song though. For what it is worth, it does feel contemplative. Doing a variation in the chorus makes it shift from contemplative to a feeling of joy. Like somebody's trying to "rain on your parade" but you keep your sun shining..like during a sunshower!
