Cube's biggest mistake with CLC?

  • CLC had major talent and still failed. Seungyeon is a top 3 dancer. Yeeun is a top 3 rapper. Yujin ranked 3rd in GP999. Seunghee is a very underrated main vocalist. Elkie had really solid visuals and would have stood out much more with a popular group. They're a very solid group talent-wise.

They didn't maintain much success mainly because they lacked direction, leadership, and songs towards the end. Their concept kept changing and they didn't have a signature sound. They had to switch leaders midway from Seunghee to Seungyeon.

Cube could have solved those problems with one move. I think Cube's single biggest mistake was not adding Soyeon to the group instead of or in addition to Eunbin. They had the opportunity to do so when both appeared on PD101.

It should be known already that Soyeon has had the biggest role in shaping GIdle's musical direction. She comes up with album concepts and has written all their title tracks. Even when they switch up their concept, their songs still have a sound that's distinct to only GIdle. She also isn't the typical K-Pop group leader. She actually makes important influential decisions that affect the group's success.

How do you think CLC would have fared if Soyeon had been added?

  • I guess Cube thought adding two visuals to the group was the best move in order to draw attention to CLC. Eunbin was visual material, Soyeon was not. End of story. There was no reason for Cube to add Soyeon to CLC back then; the group already had a main rapper.

You speak of Soyeon's role within (G)I-DLE, how she shaped the group and their music but there was no way to tell in 2016 that she'd become so important. Even when (G)I-DLE's debut lineup was settled, no one ever appointed Soyeon as the leader who would wrote and compose everything. It was not part of the initial plan; it just happened.

  • Cube's biggest mistake was not capitalizing on the success of Hobgoblin and pushing more into that sound direction.

They instead came out with Where Are You, which didn't seem to fit at all with the success of the previous song.

true Hobgoblin was such a bop

even that special stage released 3 years later had near 3M views

  • hindsight is always 20/20

we can try and attribute blame to the GP for sleeping on them or the company or whatever but it is what it is

the question is can cube learn from that and do something differently for Lightsum as to not end up as CLC 2.0

  • Adding Soyeon to CLC wouldn’t change anything lol. Eunbin and the other Chinese girl was added but it did nothing to the group despite Eunbin’s produce 101 backing.

When Idle debuted no one knew they would pop off. People expected them to flop until La Ta Ta Ta went viral and the song entering the charts after 1 week.

I feel like we have this discussion every time about CLC and tbh everything about the group was a mess.

Hobgoblin wasn't a success by any means, I swear I have no idea were people get Hobgoblin succes.

  • Internationally it made the most buzz but in korea, that song didnt make much noise depsite hyuna helped in that track. In fact, Soyeon's production 'NO' actually earned CLC their first trophy.

I understand it not making much noise in Korea, but didn't it still do better than their previous songs? Seems to me that continuing that trajectory would have been the smart move.

I left my heart in LA again. Please continue taking good care of it.

Yea, they should have continued with that direction. Black Dress was a good direction followed by No. But they stupidly went back to similar concept like Pepe i.e. Devil. Wasnt expecting Devil to sound that funky - should have sticked back to DARK /Girl crush concept.

No.1 album was one of their best album with good likes Like It and Show. Dont understand how they managed to ruin it. Maybe after all they really needed someone like Soyeon to self-manage and self-produce for the group. CUBE isnt helpful at all
