I feel like they had the debut really planned for a long time and they didn't expect her to go as far as to almost be on Kep1er by 1 place. Seeing now how far she went and the fact she got some solid attention, specially in Korea, it's a solid addition to the group, and it also generates additional hype for their 1st comeback.

Congrats Suyeon! I think the company was waiting to see the reception of the debut, since it wasn't as big, they decided to add her for the hype. Good thing, I think she will fit perfectly
I feel like they would have added her regardless because of how good she did and the attention she got, Billlie sold 10k on Hanteo this first week which I don't think is bad for a gg from a nugu company on the K-Pop world... Because let's be real, unless you are very interested in SM overall or were a Brown Eyed Girls stan nobody really knows Mystic Story, they'll need some time to make a name of themselves both Billlie and Mystic Story, since it doesn't seem like SM will release their MVs on their channel.

I really recommend you to start with their predebut content on their official channel, they had some pretty good predebut content in collaboration with 1million which included fancams with the names of each member. They had dance covers, a rap cover, prereleased Flowerld... You can also check out a few videos they released on 1thek covering songs as well.
There wasn't that much content from the members before all that, but the more known girls were Moon Sua (which participated on Unpretty Rapstar 2, and sister of Moonbin of Astro, also was a trainee on YG for like 10 years and was part of that "Future 2ne1" video) and Suhyeon which had participated in some drama and was on Produce 101 and Mixnine if I'm not wrong.
