SNSD, fx, Red Velvet paved the way for Aespa

  • It’s something people don’t often recognize but it’s true in two days.

    1. Reputation - A LOT of people were anticipating their debut. The first news about Aespa trended in Korea and China. Even if the public wasn’t up to date with all the debut details they know of SM’s legacy of debuting successful girl groups. And to many of them Aespa (then known as White Fox, Moonlight Angels or SMNGG) was going to be SNSD’s spiritual successor.

    2. Fandom - Aespa debuted at a perfect time when other SM GG fandoms were more accepting of them. At fx’s debut they were under prime SNSD’s shadow. When RV debuted they faced fierce hatred from fx’s fandom. But by the time Aespa debuted these fandoms mellowed out. Sones who didn’t give fx and RV that much of a chance checked out Aespa. fx fans no longer have a group to look forward to, so it was either RV who they initially hated or new girls Aespa. And SNSD/RV fans with company stan inclinations saw Aespa as an opportunity to get back to former SM glory days.

While many factors went into Aespa’s success, these two were two major foundations from where they could grow higher more quickly.

  • I don't know that all those who were anticipating and hoping for a true SNSD successor ultimately translated.

I'm an SNSD Stan who was hoping for a new SNSD like group. But ultimately AESPA is not of that vein so I didn't jump on board.

I think AESPA may not have ultimately picked up that demo. They don't scratch that itch.

At least for those specifically hoping for the Nation's Girl Group esque type girl group.

I think we're still waiting for a successor in that regard.

  • #1; True statement. I hope SME really gets the overall presentation primed and airtight for Aespa (music, choreo, basically everything) so they can add to the legacy properly.

  • I agree with you mostly.

The debut hype is something that any group from the top companies will get. People can look down on this privilege as much as they want but ultimately it is deserved, and gained by earning goodwill from fans across the years through consistent delivery of great groups and great music.

And yes, I think their debut timing was just right in avoiding any major friendly fire from SM gg fandoms.

SNSD and Fx's time was over, unlike when RV debuted. Reveluvs also tend to be a pretty chill fandom, and I know many of us remember what they went through upon debut and wouldn't wish that on Aespa. Waiting for Wendy to return and Irene's scandal to die down meant there was likely nothing group wise for some time. I think after Black Mamba was released as well, people could tell that the group had been planned for quite some time and wasn't rushed to cover up anything. Especially with the whole lore and worldview aspect of Aespa.

I think there's also a part 3. The experimental music that all the previous groups dropped has helped people to ease into Aespa as well. Would Next Level & Savage been so well received without the likes of I Got a Boy, Red Light or Zimzalabim coming before it? (or the weirder Suju, Exo and NCT stuff as well tbh).

That said, while there's been some influence from their senior SM groups, Aespa is now forging ahead with their own spin on things and they're doing it damn well.

Here's to their bright future and continued success!!

    :pepe-toast:

  • I think it’s 50/50 for Sones or former sones who were looking for a new SM GG to stan. But they didn’t outright despise Aespa the same way RV was hated at debut. So either way Aespa got a few more advantages compared to their predecessors (fx and RV)

  • Not at all. SM is way ahead of the pack when it comes to these factors. JYP a distant second with WG - miss A - Twice - Itzy - NiziU, but miss A lacked a big fandom to carry over into Twice

Jypn sold 60k albums alone with no revel of anything I think that speaks for itself all big 3 and some other company’s groups will have some type of foundation because of their predecessors but whether the groups becomes a success is down to the group itself :suure: If your theory was correct Aespa would have debuted with a successful hit and their Forever comeback would also be as successful :suure:

Black Mamba was very successful, and broke certain records. Forever was too boring and not a fully promoted comeback

  • That's just the hype of big companies in general regardless if groups are similar. If a new jyp gg comes along they'll inevitably be linked to Twice or Itzy and fans of those groups will likely to check them out, of a new YG gg comes along it will be with BP and blinks (though who wants them as fans lol) and of course a new SM gg will be linked with every gg and each groups' fans will check them out.

Black Mamba was a great debut I personally wouldn’t call it a successful debut and Forever was still a comeback whether it’s boring or not Aespa just came back with Savage without promotion yet and it’s doing well by your theory Forever should have been successful too :suure: since they had the support of Sm past groups :huuh:

They were just waiting at the wings for a more legitimate song after BM. They didn’t go away

  • when you think about it, both f(x) and RV's debut timing was terrible :eyes:, like the worst you could imagine.

f(x) debuted right through SNSD's golden years and they were tragically overshadowed when they honestly deserved better, they deserved the spotlight. with better title tracks too like Russian Roulette or Peak a boo who both sound like an fx song.

they should have debuted around 2011 when snsd was sent away in Japan and only had like 1 comeback /year. NOT before.

And RV should have debuted around 2015, after SNSD released their last album and almost retired but most importantly, alongside sm treating fx better.

The rejection and hatred RV received was really something.

While aespa debuted when years of people anticipating a new sm gg debut. etc

Most people's gaze was very positive and thrilled when they debuted.
