Would you say BTS and Blackpink are famous for being famous?

Neither group is known for their music at least globally. BTS were known for their music... until 2019-20. Blackpink have never been so. Now BTS is seen as this huge juggernaut that has economic impact and what not. They are a brand more than a musical act. Everyone seems to love the idea of BTS more than they love the music itself. Similar goes for Blackpink. They are known for their fashion career more than their popstar careers. Nobody takes them seriously musically but people would definitely talk about fans sending you hate for not thinking labubus are cute (they are not).

Yes I made this thread just to diss labubus.

Also now a days, hardly any artist is universally famous. They are known and listened by their fans and a community (some have big communities and some have small).

Bad bunny is famous as hell for his music but I have never heard his songs, simply I am not interested, It doesn't make his music less less popular. Similarly many people haven't heard aboyt Taylor swift and arjit singh but they are hella popular in their own communities.

I hate how this weird narrative only gets applied to kpop artists and that too by kpop fans. I have never seen these weird discussions about other artists when its the same for everyone. NO ONE is popular at MJ level because now a days people discover their own interest through internet instead of being told by cqble TV and remain stick to their fan communities. Outside of those communities you would find the same artist nugu mostly and its alright. 😶😶😶

I will agree with the point about a lack of a monoculture and universally popular artists.

I feel like BTS are more global than someone like Bad Bunny or Arijit Singh. Bad Bunny has no visibility whatsoever in countries like India or Japan similarly Arijit Singh is mostly known among Indians and the Indian diaspora not even generating clout in Americas. The same can't be said for BTS. They are creating economic impact in Los Angeles, have massive borderline political image in China and Japan. They are also very very well known in Europe and are selling out stadiums in Latin America. They have way more name recognition than Bad Bunny and Arijit Singh, yet I think the recognition for their music doesn't match that.

I don't listen to pop music outside of a few kpop groups and some Billie Eilish here and there. Nobody attacked them they just got offended because I merely said fans of popular artists who stan for cults of personalities aren't interested in discovering new music and for me to have expected that from one of them was my bad. This might come off as condescending but it's just facts. Nobody is asking you to listen to rock music but it's also true if someone says stans of big artists have very insular music taste.

You need to stop being offended over someone not thinking much of your music taste. I never called you stupid. I said oh well you are a BTS fan they don't listen to music much it's my bad for expecting you to know Radiohead. I am saying that BTS fans are mostly people who don't listen to music outside of your usual pop chart topping hits. A lot of them have insular music taste. So many of them are normie-lites who don't like to discover more music. Their palettes are limited and safe. I don't expect most of them to be reading Pitchfork or be listening to the latest Swans record. I don't expect most of them to be aware of Radiohead (like you weren't) despite them being a supremely influential rock artist. In the same vein I don't expect many people to know BTS's music too despite them being a supremely influential pop artist. Swifties are similar. This is not a diss this is a fact. It leads to a lack of perspective when having discussions about music. My parents don't listen to music, they are normal people who listen to their 5 60s singers. If I say they don't know anything about modern pop music and I don't expect that's not a diss but a fact. It's well known that most people stop discovering new music after they hit a certain age. If I say old people who only listen to the beatles know nothing about latest hip hop artists am I calling them stupid? How is limited palette = stupidity?

also back on topic - yes and no the question is are they known for their music in the west - obviously I wouldn't go as far to say they are mainstream but maybe borderline since both groups have a huge fandom and some of their music are well know

but success builds upon success and both groups use the momentum of their music to build up their brand awareness to further their other endeavours to then build up their music etc etc

It's a general question rather than focused on some place. I think it's pretty obvious that these groups have better established reputation in their home country. On a larger, global level though I think the musical recognition is lacking and I say this for my country too. I don't live in the west.

Critics don't consider kpop albums worth reviewing outside of bland NME reviews that gives 5 stars to everything (and even they don't care about Lisa's new album) and occasional Pitchfork reviews that went out of its way to diss Lisa and gave Jennie a middling 7. They didn't even review BTS solo albums. AV Club famously used snide tones with them and the last time The Guardian or Los Angeles Times used positive words for BTS were for LY: Tear and BP well.. never.

Anthony Fantano has never given either of them a rating above 6. The only highly rated BTS album on RYM or AOTY.org is HYYH pt.2 and BP well... none of them.

Also I am no stan. Casual listeners exist.

How is it bitterness when I have zero qualms in saying BTS post 2017 make dogshit music?

How is it not factual when I literally posted the aggregate of their critical reviews by 49 outlets showing a critics score of 72 in above screenshots and said none of their solo albums got reviewed by Pitchfork? Notice how you posted only group reviews.
