aespa used to be hated and now everyone loves them…what changed?
-
-
They have good music quality and people stopped shoving their heads up their own behinds
-
-
They left Kwangya behind them, and never looked back
So kwangya was holding them back huh
-
-
glow up
dropping the kwangya wildness
more palatable songs
-
-
Agreed
Many people outside of Aespa fans were not interested in the lore. It's no coincidence they became more popular as they moved away from it. When I read reviews of their tour people weren't into the AI avatar being used in their concerts ( for some reason I can't remember it's name lol).
When people talk about Aespa today you rarely hear people talk about the lore and more focused is on them and their music. Kwangya was an interesting experiment but it had a short shelf life, and they wisely moved on from it -

Without the whole kwangya lore, aespa makes more sense to GP and got exposed to a wider audience. Altough they weren't flops before dropping Kwangya, their growth speed is light years bigger now.

Now mys are the bullies.
havent they always kinda been the bullies
-
As a MY since the first hour i'll give my opinion
and in contrary belief i don't think them leaving Kwangya is the big reason of their sudden urge in popularity
Cuz let's be honest if i ask anybody right now what is the meaning of Supernova or whiplash lyrics on the spot nobody would be able to answer to me, so i doubt the meaning of their songs really had a big impact on their current reception from international fans
First of all i think the bigger factor was Music,
In the past their sound was consider "experimental" cuz it was heavily influence by Hyper pop/EDM mix with some hip hop influence.
I think what change recently is that they find a good balance in trying to stay true to themselves by keeping this hyper pop influence but making it able to mix it with more trendy sounds which make their songs more easy to listen to people who weren't really used to the hyper pop sound
Second of all i think aesthetic wise it also looks cleaner
MV wise Aespa mv used to look cool but you could see that they tend to be a bit cheap compare to what they are doing now
you can see now that SM is putting much more budget in their MV
and even when they don't put tons of money (aka whiplash) you can see that they try to make their mv stand out in the way they are produce
Third originality,
Originality will always attract people cuz people will be curious about what it is
and i think This is a big factor that aespa have because of their concept and aesthetic
when you look at all the other girlgroup currently in 4th gen and 5th gen
and put all their photo teaser next to each other, Aespa really stand out as being different from the rest of the pack
Aespa have an identity that no other girlgroup have currently
that's why Kpop fans and koreans talk about Aespa core cuz with their concept and visually they have been able to create a true image
and even sond wise, the fact that they have been able to refine their sound lately makes that people use a special expression to talk about aespa songs as " Iron taste songs"
like which other group have their own expression to talk about their songs ? NONE
-
Also i would add this
Aespa is able to be able to gether a great team of smart producer and lyricist who are able to work well together to create a great synergy
I like this video of how this guy was able to analysis aespa songs and talk about their arrangement, heavy bass, the pattern of their latest song

Mys were nasty at the same extent of any big fandom, it's just that people pay more attention to the nasty ones, but a lot of mys are pretty chill

Oh, for sure!!! In general big fandoms are 70% chill people with 20% problematic ones and 10% that react towards toxicity instead of being the toxic ones.

The line between love and hate is so thin so in theory it people hate a group there’s a chance to love them too lol

It’s funny despite people saying SM lost its mojo when LSM left I think him leaving saved aespa’s career! Or at least fast tracked them into the limelight! Wasn’t he trying to get them to sing that sustainability song

Imo why people love aespa is befause they’re consistent! They stick to their concept despite the hate/love they receive! People can pick out the aespa sound and style!
Even if you dislike their music you at least appreciate their identity

Naevis debut happened
-
that's so funny how people are here saying MY were nasty in 2021
but are completely leaving out an important information that in 2021 :
- Blinks on this forum were nasty making 10 daily threads to say about how aespa is a copycat of blackpink, how Aespa outfit are inspire by blackpink, how their teaser were copying bp and the rest of the blinks were sitting on silence on the side watching Blinks being toxic
- Midzy were nasty saying that aespa will never be successfull and aespa will be a one hit wonder who will never be close to what Itzy is as 4th gen leader
- and the rest of the forum was doing 20 daily threads to talk about how aespa visual, their lack of stage presence, etc.....
-
-
-
I think people just hated their concept, which i think it’s a pretty irrelevant and stupid thing to dislike a group for lol.
Plus we gotta remember, LSM was gonna make them sing about saving the planet, so some of the hate was warranted.

Just me said it and like I said nasty like any other big fandom. You specifically were nasty towards Itzy.
-
They became too big to hate
-
They removed those avatars

-
Yeap, when I first joined, I constantly noticed Soo would take ANY opportunity to sink the boot into itzy stuff.
What you really need to get some context here is to find someone that used to be a big aespa hater who turned into a stan.
Get their perspective on things.
Not sure where you'd find one though.
-
I still hate them
-
They left Kwangya behind them, and never looked back
-
well, i would say they had better songs too when lsm was kicked out
-

What changed for you?
I know it was more Mys you hated, but I remember some back and forth back in the days before you started to like them.
IMO, I think it's a combination of success and the release of easier listening music.
People love to success stan and easy listening has been the trend last few years.
Just look at charting for Armageddon vs Supernova/Whiplash.

So it was a gradual thing, it's hard to pinpoint an EXACT moment, more my dislike softening and once that wall was down the rest was easy.
Going to spoiler because its a wall of text
I'll talk about why I disliked aespa first. When they first debuted, I was new to kpop and they were the first "big" group to debut after I was into it. So I was bemused, confused and annoyed seeing the whole very kpop thing of not just getting excited for a new group but hardcore stans suddenly appearing and bignoteing the group before they even debuted. It's still a concept that doesn't still doesn't sit well with to this day, but at the time it made me feel that their success and hype was "artificial".
I also just flat didn't like Black Mamba, Next Level and Savage. I felt they were a bit gimmicky and too much into the whole "machine sounds" trappings of the time. Also wasn't a big fan of the whole mix up in style midway through a song like Next Level. They still aren't near my favourite songs from aespa, but I've warmed to Savage alot (the other two a little less so, but I don't dislike them anymore).
Also... the early concept. Kwangya, the AI avatars. It just wasn't well done and just seemed a little juvenile to me. This wasn't the groups fault, they were just going with the concept given to them, but I just felt it was silly. Especially when they tried incorporating it in live performances. There was one particularly disastrous one where the Avatars looked downright awful while the members looked lost on a big empty stage.
There were also the issues with the groups earlier live performances being... less than great. The lip syncing accusation, choreo difficulties, stage presence etc. But that, in hindsight, really reeks more of corporate forcing them into various stages without enough preparation or experience. They have DEFINITELY grown into their live performances and stage presence.
And yeah... My's. There were bad eggs there. I missed the early days of Twice v Blackpink so it was my first real experience with fandoms of different groups just absolutely obsessing about other groups. Unfortunately, I was big in ITZY at the time and perceived some My's constant targeting and obsession with ITZY as gross, and I'm big enough to admit that the behavior of a fandom (or elements thereof) can sour me on my perception of a group.
So where did I start to turn and why?
First it was the members. I kept coming across clips and videos of particularly Karina and Winter just being absolute goofy goobers and silly and fun, which softened my opinion of the group. The occasional Itzy-aespa crumbs and knowing how close the members of both groups are helped.
Girls was their last TT drop that I wasn't a fan of, but even in the Bop or Flop thread I hinted more that I felt it was just boring rather than outright dislike.
Realising not ally My's were dicks and that my antics were just ass bad as what I was perceiving My's as doing... I actually recall one or two replies to my nonsense from either you or foreveraespaaa back then that I had no good answer too because they made me actually think about what I was saying.
But it was a song from that album, Lifes Too Short, that got me. It popped a few times on some Spotify random playlists and I found myself enjoying it without realizing WHO it was from. Then I found it was from aespa and I was like "Wait, their songs aren't all just noisy and messy?"
Hold on Tight and Welcome to my World were the game changers for me though. By then, it was just like Megatron said in the 1986 Transformers Movie... "Their defenses are down, let the slaughter begin". My defenses were down and those two songs crashed through the walls and hooked me instantly. Like they weren't just good songs, they were easily in my best songs for 2023. And Better Things as well.
Come to think of it, the whole pre-LSM/post-LSM thing is probably a big player here. That and the shedding of the avatars.
From there on it was a pretty smooth transition. Consume more content. Listen to their stuff with a more open mind. Realising I was actually getting excited or looking forward to a comeback. Feeling FOMO when aespa toured Australia and I didn't realise I wanted to go until too late. Realising I was going to be in Japan for their Tokyo Dome encore and thinking "why the hell not, it might be fun". Lining up in the AWFUL Tokyo heat to buy merch (that had sold out anyway).

I may be wrong but I think that the haters just moved on to different groups, not became their fans? I don't know if I said it well but basically I believe that it's not that the haters suddenly turned into the fans. They just became bigger and a bit more public friendly, so they gained a lot of new fans over the years.
I personally always checked out their title tracks but only became their actual fan after the release of Drama, because I loved it a lot and it made me want to check out their bsides for the first time.
I remember being a bit confused and taken aback by Kwangya too, especially some of the lyrics in their first songs, so maybe this too played a part in them having less fans back then.
It also seems that all bigger groups just have a lot of haters too (and yes, I consider them being a bigger group from the start, because they debuted in SM).

Nice, and thanks for sharing.

Can we all imagine how nice Kpop would be without the fandom toxicity.
Back in the Next Level era there were definitely loads of toxic Mys who mostly got filtered out during the Girls era.
I'm similar tbh, there are groups that I haven't liked because the fans are toxic, and of course there are times where I will give it back as well and ultimately behave the same. I try not to but there are slips.
I think I've rarely said anything nice about 2NE1 ever for example due to being a SNSD fan formerly haha.
-
They ditched that Naevis nonsense in ways that matter and started sticking to their concept. SM kicking Lee Soo Man out was a net benefit for the group. The moment his tree planting activities stopped interfering with the concept and they got on board actual concept and visual artists to work with the group the output improved.

Haters realized Lesserafim was an easier target.
