After months of polling, these are your Top 5 ACTIVE Most Popular Girl Groups today

  • Do you agree with this top 5 most popular girl group ranking? 22

    1. No, I disagree (13) 59%
    2. Yes, I agree (9) 41%

The numbers are in. I've completed huge volumes of quantitative analysis and comparison. For 2024, the top 5 girl groups are decided. Honestly, other than the top group, the results were surprising. Without further ado, let me present my findings.

    1. NewJeans

This excerpt will be short and sweet. In a year where the group is caught in the maelstrom that is the war between their CEO and Creative Director, MHJ, and their parent company, HYBE, who are actively sabotaging and suppressing them, NewJeans still managed:

    • The most streamed artist on MelOn in 2024
    • The best selling girl group in 2024
    • The most digital index points on Circle in 2024
    • The most streamed girl group on Spotify in 2024
    • The fastest foreign act in history to sell out the Tokyo Dome in the venue's history with just their fanclub only presale
    • The biggest, best and most brand deals of any girl group by a wide margin

Are the others even trying? If NewJeans couldn't be dethroned this year, it's never going to happen unless they actually abdicate the throne. Until then, they remain the leaders of this generation.

    2. aespa

I'm sorry, Dives. I tried to resist this swap, but aespa just recently surpassed IVE in Circle Digital Index points for the first time, well, ever.

On top of that, they just had their best year on Spotify by a wide, wide margin and they had the single biggest hit song of any girl group this year. Quite frankly, aespa needed this year and it's been a career best. Not to mention Karina PERHAPS taking the It Girl title from Wonyoung.

Another factor in their favor is momentum. Thanks to a myriad of reasons, the public is fully supportive of aespa in ways they never were before. I honestly thought the debate for top two was finished for good after 2023, which IVE put up numbers that would be eye popping in literally any other year that didn't overlap with what NJ did.

aespa truly exploded like a Supernova this year.

    3. IVE

Well this was an obvious choice. IVE's cumulative numbers, both digitals and album sales, are still top class, but being surpassed by a non-NJ girl group for the first time in their careers on Circle was somewhat shocking. Heya was still a big hit, but it was overshadowed by several releases in that same window.

Still, IVE still put up fantastic overall numbers, and if you look at Gallup polls, they are still ranked in second place by the Korean public and it isn't really all that close either.

The main thing that FINALLY made me knock them down was again, their getting passed by aespa on Circle, but also their inability to gain any traction whatsoever on Spotify. Their album sales in Japan are stellar but not enough to close the gap. All that being said, if they return to form next year, IVE can easily reclaim their spot.

    4. (G)I-DLE

God, I hate typing this obnoxious name on mobile. But anyways, if you didn't know about IDLE's dominance before, now you do.

People prematurely called their Super lady comeback a flop, but they had multiple songs in the top 20 on MelOn and Fate actually rose to the top and secured their historic FOURTH Perfect All-Kill in a row. For those who don't know, that means Fate was #1 on every single chart in Korea.

Then you combine that with the fact they're the ONLY girl group who didn't see a significant reduction in album sales. In fact, until recently, they had the best album sales of any girl group, only just being passed by NewJeans. They're also the second most popular girl group in China after aespa, which isn't insignificant.

If IDLE could just do anything on Spotify, they would easily challenge for the #2 spot, but it just isn't meant to be it seems.

    5. LE SSERAFIM

Well...this one hurts for me personally. After the success of Perfect Night, I thought LSF was poised to easily take the #2 spot from IVE, but between a very controversial string of encore performances, the infamous Coachella stage and then a host of other minor controversies among the general public, their digitals have never been worse. Crazy barely peaked in the top 50 and is already about to leave the top 100. When it does, no LSF songs will be in the top 100. An insane plummet from even their Easy era

HOWEVER, what bolsters them immensely are their Spotify numbers. They are second only to NewJeans in that regard, and they also managed to be the only girl group to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 this year. That's not insignificant.

But I mentioned momentum earlier, and of the top 5, they have the worst by several magnitudes. I'm worried for their future in Korea specifically, and if the trend continues, they could even be supplanted by another girl group if the 5th Gen (looking at you BABYMONSTER) can get their act together.

Anyway, this is the final ranking. It's infallible, so I know you all agree, but I will poll.

Thank you for reading this far while I alleviated my boredom during my lunch break.

    Bye.

Aespa is the biggest GG of 4th gen in China

Other than that I agree with your ranking

  • Their last release was Shutdown in September 2022, then they toured until September 2023, so they've really only been "inactive" for a year and obviously that was due to solo work. But that's a bit off topic....

I agree with your ranking and it is nicely presented, thank you for your service.

  • Thank you for the correction. I was too busy to double check that.

Blackpink just took one year break for their solo activities. Next year they are gonna comeback and have another world tour

Their last group release was in 2022. That's an eternity in K-Pop. I don't consider them an active group. They're not dropping multiple releases each year like Twice.

I agree with your ranking and it is nicely presented, thank you for your service.

    My pleasure

  • Blackpink never dropped multiple releases every year like twice, by that logic they have never been active?

It's disingenuous to act like their current hiatus is typical when it isn't. The girls are also clearly prioritizing their individual pursuits. And if we were to discuss the results of their last group comeback relative to the top active girl groups, well...let's not make this about them :eyes:

Yes they took one year break from group activities, that's what Rosé said in her interview. Next year they are gonna comeback again like before.

Well we'll see what numbers they do when it happens. I put zero faith in YG timelines. Been burned by them for a decade. You shouldn't either.

    Until then, they're inactive.

I trust you all agree with my aespa write up overall ;judgingpepe:

Yes I agree as I previously said

But it would’ve been nice if you have added some of their japanese achievements too!

They had a very good year in Japan

150k sales on Oricon for their JP debut

    Overall 4tokyo domes

Longest charting 4th gen gg song on BBH100 Japan this year(26 weeks and still counting), Highest charting 4th gen gg song in 2024 on Spotify and AM Japan and etc…

  • I can’t believe YG’s words! He always lies about dates

He even delayed Babymonster’s comeback for 2 months…

Most likely BP will return in 2026

Even if BP will have a comeback next year, YG won't give them more songs than 1 or 2. And one of them will be an instrumental version or a remix, probably. 😅

I mean, how many Full-Album BP had in 8 years? Two! Technically, none, because both album had only 8 songs, that's an EP. YG's main focus is Babymon now.

  • yeah from active groups those 5 make sense

  • 1. NewJeans

    Do you have actual proof?

    I mean:

    • The most streamed artist on MelOn in 2024

Not sure about that. Girl group? Maybe, but not artist when you have IU! Sorry, but I won't do much research about this. I don't have that much time, but I'm pretty sure IU, Aespa and even Gidle is close to NJ if not better.

    • The best-selling girl group in 2024

Yeah, definitely NOT! Overall sales, including every album they released in 2024:

    1. Gidle: 2.6M

    2. NewJeans: 2.47M

    3. Aespa: 2.44M

    4. Le Sserafim: 2M

    5. IVE: 1.7M (The only group with 1 album this year)

You can check the numbers on Korean Sales Blog!

    • The most digital index points on Circle in 2024

You mean overall or point achieved only in 2024? If the latter, I'm not sure about this either!

This is all I can find from 2024, and it's only the 1st half: 써클차트 - CIRCLE CHART, 글로벌 케이팝(K-pop) 음악차트

    • The most streamed girl group on Spotify in 2024

Again, if you only count the new releases, NJ wouldn't be on the top, that's for sure.

  • Shut up

New jeans is very firmly behind Aespa this year. Aespa outperformed them in every platform and metric with their 2024 releases. So I would swap places with Aespa and new jeans.

I see no lie :melon_think: tbh I’m not the best to fact check this  I still don’t understand how Spotify stats work :/ but NJ, aespa, ive, gidle and lsf are the top 5 gg in 4th/5th gen currently but these never seem to last! We can be looking at a new set of list in 2025

Basically only trust me when it comes to numbers. I'm always fair and back up everything with facts. I'm just electing not to spam them and instead summarizing.

aespa did indeed kill it this year. If NewJeans end up on a temporary hiatus for who knows how long, aespa will be #1 during that time.
