Who was more popular at their peak? Big Bang or SNSD?

  • Who was the more popular group at their peak? Big Bang or SNSD? 65

    1. Big Bang (35) 54%
    2. SNSD (30) 46%

I need to know what AKP thinks the answer to this question is. It used to be one of the most hotly debated topics in K-Pop.

    I'm team Big Bang personally

Surely a thread like this won't ruffle any feathers.

  • Music show wins? Maybe?

wsoet I remember had something like that in the stats

Yes. Coincidentally, Big Bang and SNSD actually have almost the same number of music show wins, at 101 and 100, respectively.

  • yes, thats the post I remembered.

Sales wise? Pretty sure they are very close as well.

  • I don't see why that has to stop people from having an opinion on which group is more popular.

It's common knowledge that boy groups and girl groups usually have different standards for their popularity metrics, with girl group metrics being traditionally more reliant on the general public and boy groups more reliant on intense fandom, but both Big Bang and SNSD are unique here.

Big Bang scored hit songs like the biggest girl groups. More than any girl group.

SNSD sold albums like boy groups. More than any boy group of their era.

That's why this is such a compelling comparison for me, because both of these groups peaked in the same era.

I personally think MADE put Big Bang on another level of popularity, even from SNSD.

A couple of caveats: We're missing quite a few sales figures for BigBang, and in general, pre-Gaon era sales numbers just aren't as reliable typically.

  • Believe it or not, I was not into male groups' music in the second generation.

I only listened to GG's music so my vote went to them.

"You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't bout how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward." ~ Rocky Balboa

Bigbang did far better even after burning sun scandal, there is no match

but the later had a bigger cultural impact in terms of attachment to their image and branding.

    No not at all

  • This is kind of an interesting comparison, both were the iconic top groups, each with their own legendary achievements :-)

As for popularity, it all depends on what you define as 'popularity', and then you have the separation between popularity in SK, and internationally.

Both groups have their own core strengths where they excelled in. But SNSD seems to have the edge: SNSD were both more popular in South Korea with a higher, longer popularity peak. And SNSD were more popular cq had stronger global recognition internationally.

... would have been even more interesting if EXO were included in this comparison with SNSD and Big Bang, rankings in some metrics would have shaken up including EXO too. Maybe for a future thread, Yama-Chan:wink:

  • I didn't include Exo because they're third generation, and I personally don't feel they peaked as high as either of these groups, though that is just my opinion.

Big Bang and SNSD kind of transcended K-Pop in ways others did not up until BTS rose.

  • Where SNSD had more longevity than BB in SK? This is not true and you can clearly see their releases from 2015~2022 to know which group were far ahead of the other. That's longevity.

Don't loose your time with SM stans. they are compulsive liars who live in a parallel reality we need to stop giving them attention

I'm in shock with how some sones are really trying to paint SNSD as the biggest group in Korea ever since the other thread like... Calm down, they were amazing, but BB longevity is something that can't be compared when every BB era was hit after hit in SK and Asia... 2015 alone proved how they are the top 2nd gen group and 2022 was a joke to others when they had the most successful bg song of that year without promoting.

    Anyways...

Unless you're trying to make a bad joke, will you please stop with trying to make insulting, degrading comments like that? It's offensive and if you weren't joking, then you clearly intended it as an insult.

Everyone who has more than 2 working braincells and actually using them and not being intellectually lazy knows that being a fan of 1 group - or even 2 groups - of a company, doesn't make you a company stan of that company.

Where SNSD had more longevity than BB in SK? This is not true and you can clearly see their releases from 2015~2022 to know which group were far ahead of the other. That's longevity.

    Anyways...

What I meant was that SNSD' peak of popularity, where they topped their popularity in SK, was higher and longer than BigBang's in SK, using Gallup as main criterium for popularity.

To elaborate: in the years 2009, 2010 and 2011 (3 years straight), SNSD were the #1 most popular artists in SK with popularity scores of 29.8, 31.5 and 26.1%.

The only year that BigBang topped the Gallup rank as #1 most popular artists was in 2015 with a popularity score of 15.5%, only 1 year.

... hopefully this explains what I meant with longevity, even if you disagree with the use of Gallup as a means of looking at popularity.

  • I didn't include Exo because they're third generation, and I personally don't feel they peaked as high as either of these groups, though that is just my opinion.

Big Bang and SNSD kind of transcended K-Pop in ways others did not up until BTS rose.

Whether EXO were 3rd gen or 2nd gen is another discussion - after all, girl groups before 2014 are still regarded 2nd gen yet EXO from 2012 is 3rd gen...
But EXO had their own peak and metrics where they surpassed SNSD and Big Bang, so that would've made it an interesting comparison in its own way :)

  • What I meant was that SNSD' peak of popularity, where they topped their popularity in SK, was higher and longer than BigBang's in SK, using Gallup as main criterium for popularity.

And you'll ignore BB and SNSD digital performance through all these years just to rely on Gallup? BB having +60k concert in Seoul? BB longevity peak were higher bc they topped the charts from 2008~2022 in the years they released. That's longevity.

  • No, it's simply using facts, instead of baselessly insulting other posters because they post things you dislike.

Bigbang did far better even after burning sun scandal, there is no match

The thread title question was: who was more popular at their peak, not during their whole career.

It all depends on what you consider the main metric for popularity.

There's charting, there's Gallup, there's number and quality of CF's, etc.

If you see Gallup as the best measure for popularity in SK, then SNSD are the clear winner, with higher popularity scores and ranking.

If you see k-chart digitals as the best measure for popularity in SK, then Big Bang are the clear winner, with better digitals.

I see Gallup as the best measure for SK popularity, so that's why SNSD. But if you don't believe in Gallup and/or want to use digitals as main measure for SK popularity, then BB is the better one.

  • I use everything tbh, and BB peak wasn't just in their early years, 2015 was also their peak that's why I keep inserting it. In late 2010~ they were touring for millions of fans and with great digitals and presence in kpop so it's also their peak.

  • I will use Gallup as the basis, Bigbang have figured in the top 10, 9 times from 2007 to 2017, but have never topped the survey.

SNSD had a 10 year run on the top 10, from 2007 to 2016, topping it 3 times.

So by that metric, SNSD were more popular and steadily popular at their peak than Bigbang.

But if you consider non-peak, then Bigbang has a longer popularity.

Another factor is no GG has matched SNSD in that popularity among S Koreans, whereas BTS has assertively succeeded Bigbang.

    Other toppers,

    IU - 12 times in top #10, 2 times at #1

Jang Yoon Jung, the Trot Queen- 17 times in top #10, never left, but never topped.

LYW is the phenomenon, topping Above 40s - 4 times, but also in the top 10 of under 40s always.

  • fact with numbers:

bullshit based on a distorted perception of reality:

Incorrect. Bullshit is believing that Gallup is useless and that charting digitals = popularity in SK as if that's a 100% in-sync correlation.

But hey, you don't see me immediately go for the lazy ass, easy solution by calling others delulu stans just because they hold other criteria in higher regards than the ones I do.

  • As someone who was around for both groups being a their peak, I would say BigBang even though I listen to SNSD more often. Bigbang also still sells mass amounts of merch and albums on YG's site but SNSD only sells merch when new albums come out these days :(

Also SNSD was not really loved as much as people think they were during the 2000s even in 2011-2013 at their peak of popularity they got more hate than most of the industry for just breathing sadly. Bigbang did numerous World tours. SNSD only did parts of Asia and on occasion Europe.

What i send you is 'ULs' that's mean UNIQUE LISTENERS that's litteraly mean in 2022 for their last comeback of both group

SNSD got 200 000 korean playing their song day one, against 900 000 for bigbang despite burning sun scandal some years ago.

It's almost 5x times more, they even did better than IU. You have to face reality.

SNSD is an iconic and an HUGE and popular group in Korea, there is no debate about it.

But BIGBANG, BTS & IU is another league in Korea.

And as one of the creative directors at SM (the company of SNSD) said himself “BIGBANG were the first of their kind in Korea”

  • The question was about popularity at both groups' peak, not longevity (although when it comes to longevity, SNSD ranked in Gallup in 2022 with their comeback yet Big Bang didn't)

Ok. You showed yours, I showed you mine.

I believe that Gallup is the best criterium when it comes to measuring popularity in SK, you believe it's K-chart stats.

We both agree that SNSD and Bigbang are iconic, epic top groups.

We won't have ANY agreement on who was the more popular group at their peak, since we value different criteria as best measure for popularity in SK, I Gallup and you k-charts.

    And that's alright.

We can disagree on main points and still have a valid discussion - and hopefully also see the other's viewpoint.

No need to start insulting other disagreeing parties, just because they have differing viewpoints and value other criteria more. So, let's not in future times.

  • Actually, Bigband did top the Gallup popularity survey if I read it correctly, in 2015 with a popularity score of 15.5%

However, SNSD topped the Gallup popularity survey 3 years straight, from 2009 to 2011, and also with higher popularity scores for all those years.

    :pepe-notes:

I need to save these numbers for when NewJeans tops the survey for the second year in a row this year.

But yes, I echo your sentiment that people shouldn't be attacking each other, as this should be nothing more than a spirited but respectful debate at most.

  • The question was about popularity at both groups' peak

I think you didn't understand where I was going with this. I will clarify to make it clearer and then you are free to agree or not, but at least there will be no more misunderstandings.

Both are huge & popular groups in korea and have strong legacy, everyone is agreed on this.

These two groups made a comeback after many years in 2022. And one attracted a lot more attention and even did better than IU despite the huge scandal that hit him.

If despite this gigantic scandal, bigbang manages to bring together 4 times more people on the first day than snsd and more than IU. The burning sun scandal seriously damaged the image of bigbang and yet they still managed to stay on top when they come back... I think that that speaks for itself about the reality of the past...

As I said, SNSD is not a small group, even today they are still huge icons in kpop in general. But people have to understand BIGBANG is just an anomaly in all areas, no one is supposed to survive after such a scandal, it just shows the popularity and power of the image they had in the past which was even bigger.

If you really love something, you have to know how to let go.
