I think yes. The top 10 Netflix series in my country every day has like 5 kdramas there or more. It's huge. I think Squid Game was the kdrama peak ww and a bigger peak than any kpop act reached.

This is why I enjoy Japanese dramas.

There's a much wider range of themes, catering to viewers like me who aren't particularly interested in romance. While Japanese dramas can explore unique themes and focus solely on them, perhaps with a subtle romantic subplot, Korean dramas often use a theme as a pretext to focus primarily on romance.

In sense that they are more watched and more acceptable, yes.

Deja vu - didn’t we discuss this a few months back. Kdrama has always been more popular and literally started the Hallyu-wave. I also don’t get the need to compare Kdrama vs Jdrama. They both have lots of varieties of genres - also incredible drama and terrible ones too.

If you think it’s just rom-com or about love - I think it’s your own exposure, non? Like Kdrama makes amazing police, action, crime, social commentaries, and sci-fi/fantasty and historicals drama too.

it's stereotype that kdrama is always about romance. There are many genre in kdrama.

Warning on The Guest/Revenant, those two are straight up horror. You could probably argue the same for Strangers From Hell too. But they're all really well made.

There are a ton of great dramas without romance as the main plot point, so don't hesitate to reach out.

(There are also FANTASTIC romance dramas too, like Lovely Runner which just ended, so don't shut the door on them entirely)

Darker KDrama that I recommend - I have seen them all and enjoy them all - dark dark and horror

Signal - crime/police with a bit of fantasy

Inspector Koo - dark comedy - psychological crime thriller

The Glory - revenge!!!

Taxi Driver - police and revenge action

Save Me - group of friends vs a cult!

Kingdom and happiness -are my fav Kdrama re zombies. kingdom is historical but very dark… happiness is modern and a bit lighter than Kingdom - both are still darker than most Kdrama

Flower of Evil - police, mystery, psychological wife vs husband - I enjoyed this one!

Ah I forgot Sweet Home - horror - monster dystopia

Every drama I listed is a B+ drama at worst and most of them are A or A+ dramas. I've seen..a lot, so my bar is set really high for my grading scale.

That said, I'll also recommend Vincenzo. I'm upset I left that off my list based on what you're looking for, Hypernova.

For horror, throw in Bugasal as well. It definitely has a romance main plot, but it's woven in beautifully with the mysticism, lore and horror.

I'll also second Kingdom and throw in Happiness (post-apocalyptic zombie drama).

And I'll throw in Sky Castle, Healer and World of the Married (the drama that made Han Sohee really skyrocket into superstardom). And lastly, I'll recommend an extremely underrated drama that keeps you guessing until the end and has extremely well written characters--May It Please The Court.

All of these dramas have core plot elements that do not solely revolve around the romance between the leads, and most have no romance at all.

I think it's pretty much impossible to go through the list I provided and not come out a huge K-Drama fan!

I really got into C-Dramas a couple years ago too, so if anyone ever gets bored of K-Dramas....

Now, coincidentally enough, I return to marathoning my latest K-Drama, My Dearest (I know I'm late on this one).

kdrama has a variety of genres, why only think its all about romance, just because the most popular ones are rom coms doesn't mean others are too

I know many randoms who watch k-dramas and are not intrested in k-pop whatsoever so idk maybe? I got into dramas thanks to k-pop, now I don't really watch them, but I still listen to k-pop but for many people k-dramas were the gateway to kpop, at least it seems so

I also watch Cdrama but am very very very picky lol about which ones. But the great ones are amazing drama

Kdrama are more popular overall but i noticed top kpop idols are more famous than the top k-actors/actresses globally
