is Vocal the main focus of 4th gen GG now?

  • I remember when people used to say at the start of 4th gen that performance will going to be the main focus of this generation

but watching the latest debut it seems that More and more groups are focusing on vocals more than performance wise

is it because they saw that groups with strong vocals have a better longevity in korea and more popular ?

Aespa is part of SM, and they always put the highlight on vocals, but this time they put 4 good vocalist in one group to complete each other

JYP is the company who seem to focus most often on performance and put Vocal as the last of his priority considering all thee groups he debuted, but recently with NMIXX you can see that vocals is the main focus of them and they are less focus on doing crazy chorregraphy and performance and more on doing performance who highlight their vocals

and finally YG was always knew to be the company with the weakest vocalist everytime, and this time for Baby monster debut, and after watching their predebut performance their focus is not really on giving powerful performance like Blackpink used to do in their predebut videos but much more on the vocals, that's why he put so many vocalist in this group

what do you think about vocals becoming the main focus of company in 4th gen ??

Changed the title of the thread from “is Vocal the main focus of 4th gen ?” to “is Vocal the main focus of 4th gen GG now?”.

  • Twice and BP

I think BP is known for perf than vocal.

while Twice is past their peaks in KR, they are still doing good in sales, so I'm not sure which group in Gen 3 is more popular than them WW outside of BP.

Other trendy gen 4 ggs like IVE, Les, and NJ still doing well and are not known for their vocal.

Only Aespa is known for their vocal because it is SM traditional lol

NMIXX is doing good in album sales, but the big 3, they are not doing good enough.

for BM, I am waiting for their debut.

so I don't think vocal is a focus of gen 4 lol

  • I think this is just a Big 3 thing only, and then specifically YG and JYP: SM have always included solid vocals in their groups and tbh, they had more stronger vocalists in former gens.

With YG and JYP, it's a yes: where before YG focused more on unique voice color and stage presence for their groups and vocal prowess and skills were considered unimportant (the sad fate of strongest dancer and vocalist yet most neglected duckling, Minzy in 2NE1, says it all), with Baemon they have included vocals, and were even advertising that vocals would be a major focus in choosing trainees for Baemon.

And while JYP groups weren't known for vocals as a main strength (except for 2AM iirc), NMIXX seems to have stronger vocalists too.

But that's it, other traits as image/visuals and performance/dance are still more important in current era.

But I guess you could say that YG and JYP have started to include strong vocals more for their new groups, where as SM have started to include strong(er) rap for their new groups.

  • But I agree that jyp and yg care about showcasing vocals now more than previous gen. SM actually prioritizes showcasing performance more for aespa but vocals has always been a requirement for them. aespa are great at the vocal depertmant but they don't seem to care about showcasing it very often which is a shame.
