NCT U - "The 7th Sense"

"The 7th Sense (일곱 번째 감각)" is a hip-hop focused song with a large emphasis on dance. Members of the group are some of NCT's best dancers, rappers and vocalists.

In January 2016, the group's concept was teased at an SM conference with special teaser videos about NCT. The first NCT unit was announced on April 4, 2016.

At the time of the song's release, NCT U was the first and only NCT sub-unit.

It was and remains a special promotional unit with rotational members. Members are chosen to perform based on the song and concept, and the groups are often heavily performance-driven. In addition to recording and performing in music videos, NCT U groups also perform on music shows and other performances within the same grouping.

This debut group includes: Taeyong, Mark, Jaehyun and Doyoung and Ten.

Taeyong and Mark are main rappers, Jaehyun, Doyoung and Ten are

main vocalists in their respective units. Mark is also in NCT Dream.

Ten would not debut in his permanent sub-unit until 2019.

"The 7th Sense" launched NCT's unique style: an innovative blend of bold hip hop, quirky instrumentals, EDM and trap flourishes, the quintessential SM vocals and challenging and intricate choreography.

Two of the group's rappers, Taeyong and Mark, co-wrote portions of the song.

This song also appears on the NCT 2018 Empathy album, featuring all NCT units at the time.

• The song reached #111 on the Korean Gaon chart and #2 on the U.S. Billboard World Songs chart.
• All of the members of this group performed together in SM's pre-debut group SM Rookies.
  They also appeared in the first seasons of NCT Life , an ongoing reality series.
• On launch, it was named by SBS Pop Asia and Dazed Digital amongst the top K-pop songs of the year. It would go on to be named by Billboard in its 100 Greatest K-Pop Songs of the 2010s list and Medium's 25 Best K-Pop songs of the 2010s.

NCT U - "Without You"

Date: April 10

Although "The 7th Sense (일곱 번째 감각)" is officially the first single, it was accompanied by a more vocally focused track. The two debut singles are often considered together, like a double title track on an album. They were also performed together in the group's debut performances, with "Without You" functioning like a b-side.

This song features members who would go on to be main vocalists in permanent NCT sub-units: Taeil, Doyoung and Jaehyun, who would join NCT 127, and Kun, who would join WayV.

Like Ten, Kun would not have a permanent sub-unit until 2019.

The song was recorded in two versions - Korean and Chinese - with Kun, a native Chinese speaker,

adding vocals only to the Chinese version.

Both versions of these songs would be re-released in 2018 as part of the all-unit NCT 2018 Empathy album and project.

This song was written by SM's legendary songwriter and producer Yoo Young-jin.

Trivia

• "Without You" reached #5 on the Chinese Billboard Charts and #3 on the U.S. Billboard World Songs chart. It also charted on the Gaon chart in Korea.
• All of these members were in SM Rookies together. At the time of this song, they had been trainees for 3 to 4 years except for Kun, who had been less than a year.
• All of these members would appear in the second season of NCT Life after the release of their first singles as part of promotional support before the next two sub-units would debut in July.
• In NCT Life, it's revealed that Kun has newly arrived to Korea and has to utilize an in-ear translator to communicate with his new group-mates.
• Kun does not appear in the concept pictures or the Chinese MV.

NCT 127 - NCT #127

The first permanent NCT sub-unit, NCT 127, debuted on July 1, 2016 with their first EP, NCT #127.

Like NCT U's first track, NCT 127 launched with a counter-culture, cool image, heavily influenced by a blend of hip hop, skateboarding culture and emo styling.

The members include: Taeil, Taeyong, Yuta, Jaehyun, Winwin, Markand Haechan.

Johnny and Doyoung would not join the group until the following year. Jungwoo would not join until 2018.

While the title track "Fire Truck" has the experimental instrumentation, eclectic mix of bombastic raps and soaring vocals the group is now known for (its signature "noise music'), the rest of the album is primarily bright pop and EDM. The album also has the braggadocious, swagger rap of "Mad City," where main rappers Taeyong and Mark pair for memorable bars.

Members Taeyong and Mark have written on many NCT songs and write on three songs here. Jaehyun also wrote lyrics for "Fire Truck."

The EP has seven songs.

The lead single "Fire Truck" was described as a perfect summer tune under the Moombahton genre, with elements of hip hop and trap. The song was co-written and produced by LDN Noise, frequent collaborators on SM songs who would go on to craft some of NCT's most popular songs.

The dramatic and intricate choreography of the title track, created by award-winning industry veteran Tony Testa, established the group's performance style: fast, bold and intricate with a blend of traditional and contemporary dance styles and show-stopping unique formations.

• The EP entered at #2 on the Korean Gaon Album Chart on July 16, 2016. In its third week, it topped the chart for one week, which was 127's first #1 on the chart.
• It was the third best selling issue of the Gaon Album Chart, selling 60,118 copies and the 32nd best selling album in 2016 with a total of 83,272 copies sold.
• It also peaked at #2 on the U.S. Billboard World Album chart and becoming their first entry on the French Digital Albums Chart and Japanese Oricon Albums Chart.
• "Fire Truck" reached #103 on Gaon and #2 on the U.S. Billboard World Song chart.

NCT 127 - "Taste The Feeling"

This CF with Coca-Cola appeared as part of the company's campaign for the Euro 2016 and Rio Summer Olympics. The song, originally written by Swedish DJ and producer Avicii was interpreted in multiple languages and used around the globe by Coke.

The members include: Taeil, Taeyong, Yuta, Jaehyun, Winwin, Mark and Haechan.

The song debuted as part of SM Station, a digital music project under SM Entertainment that involves solos or duets from members in existing SM groups, as well as opportunities for singers to experiment in other genres or collaborate with artists inside and outside of SM Entertainment. The project releases a number of singles digitally each year on digital platforms, including streaming audio like Spotify.

NCT Dream - "Chewing Gum"

The third NCT sub-unit, NCT Dream, debuted on August 24, 2016. NCT Dream was designed as a teenage boy group, with members graduating from the group once they reached adulthood (20 in Korean, 19 international age.) At the time of debut, members ranged in age from 14 to 17.

The members include: Mark, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Chenle and Jisung.

Where NCT U and 127 offered a bold, hip-hop forward sound, NCT Dream provided a more traditional bright and cheery pop sound to their songs. Like other NCT units, however, they emphasized a consistent blend of rap elements, strong and innovative dance performance and the exceptional vocals that are hallmarks of SM groups.

With two native Chinese speakers, NCT Dream also released many of its title tracks with Chinese versions. Unlike "Without You", all the members appear in both versions of the MVs.

Legendary SM songwriter and producer Kenzie wrote on this song.

Member Mark also has credits for co-writing the lyrics. He was 17 at the time.

The song was re-released on the group's first EP, The First.

• "Chewing Gum" reached #2 on the U.S. Billboard World Digital Songs Chart, #23 on the Spotify Viral 50 chart and #12 on Billboard China, as well as charting on Gaon Digital.
• All of these members were in SM Rookies together except for Renjun and Chenle, who joined the company not long before debut.
• Along with Shotaro and Sungchan, Renjun and Chenle are the only members of NCT who were not SM Rookies.
• Chenle has the second shortest training period in NCT and one of the shortest in the company: just 2 months! He had previously been a child star in China who had released several albums and performed around the world.
• Jisung is the youngest member in NCT. He was just 11 when he debuted with SM Rookies.

TW: There is cultural appropriation with hairstyles during this era, particularly with Winwin.

After winning best new artist at the MAMA Awards at the beginning of December 2016, NCT 127 announced at the end of the month that it would add two new members and release a new EP in the coming year.

The members include: Taeil, Johnny, Taeyong, Yuta, Doyoung, Jaehyun, Winwin, Mark and Haechan.

The group's second mini, Limitless introduced the final element of NCT 127's signature style, a strong R&B component with songs like "Back 2 U", produced by renowned American R&B producers The Stereotypes, and "Baby Don't Like It," co-written by popular KR&B singer G.Soul.

The tt, again co-written by Kenzie, is a great encapsulation of 127's sound: classic SM harmonies and power vocals layered with crunchy modern sonics and propelled by strong rap bars. The choreo, by Kevin Maher and Choi Hyoje, supported its unique structure with dramatic flair Kevin Maher.

The EP has six songs. Taeyong co-wrote four songs on the album, Mark three.

• All of the members of this group performed together in SM's pre-debut group SM Rookies.
• Doyoung had already debuted once with NCT U in 2016.
• Jungwoo will not join the group until 2018.
• The unique teasers became a meme and often referenced joke in the fandom.

NCT Dream - The First

The First is the debut single album by NCT Dream. The First includes the previously released song "Chewing Gum," as well as three new songs.

These early NCT Dream releases usually had the title track in both Korean and Chinese versions, and this EP includes Chinese versions of the lead single "My First and Last," as well as "Chewing Gum."

The members include: Mark, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Chenle and Jisung.

During promotions of this release, Jaemin did not participate due to medical hiatus.

The tt was co-written by frequent NCT collaborator Ryan S. Jhun. Mark also co-wrote lyrics for this song and "Chewing Gum". It is considered the first song in the group's "First Love" song series, followed by "Love Is A Bit Difficult (Bye My First...), "Love Again" and "Last Greeting (To My First)." The choreography was another eye-catching Tony Testa creation.

This single album has 5 songs and also features a cover of "Dunk Shot," which was performed as the bside with MFAL.

• The First entered the Korean Gaon Album Chart at #1. "My First and Last" reached #89 on Gaon, #9 on Chinese Billboard and #11 on the U.S. Billboard World Songs.
• The single album features Chinese versions of MFAL and "Chewing Gum."

NCT Dream - "Trigger the Fever"

NCT Dream was announced as the ambassadors of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2017 in Korea.

As a teen group, Dream was often involved in teen-focused promotions.

As part of their role, they recorded the official song of the tournament, "Trigger the Fever." The song was played at the opening ceremony, during games and at promotional events.

The members include: Mark, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Chenle and Jisung.

The song was co-written and produced by EDM producer Hitchhiker. Mark co-wrote lyrics on the song.

The single also appeared on the group's EP We Young in August 2017 and the group performed it as the b-side on music shows, although the tournament had ended in June. They also performed it during their concert tour, The Dream Show.

The choreography is by NCT's primary choreographer and trainer, PREPIX Ill Lee.

Trivia

• Group member Jaemin was on a medical hiatus so promotional releases at the time describe NCT Dream as a six-member group.

NCT / NCT U - "Stay In My Life"

This song was NCT's first OST. It is listed as alternately NCT or NCT U.

This is a very traditional OST-style pop song.

Members include: 127 main vocalists Taeil and Doyoung and main rapper Taeyong.

The song was featured on the fourth OST from the drama School 2017. The song was described as an R&B ballad that "aims to heal the pain that teenagers go through." Taeyong co-wrote lyrics to the song.

NCT Dream - We Young

We Young is the debut EP by NCT Dream. It includes five new songs, including Korean and Chinese versions of the tt, "We Young." It also includes the previously released single "Trigger the Fever," which was used as the b-side in music show promotions.

We Young continues the upbeat bright pop of NCT Dream's previously releases, enhanced by R&B style flourishes in some of the runs and ad libs.

The members include: Mark, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Chenle and Jisung.

Jaemin was still on his medical hiatus and does not appear on this EP or in promotions.

The tt is by Kenzie and LDN Noise with the joyful infectiousness of other early NCT Dream tt.

This EP has six songs. Mark has writing credits on three songs on this mini album.

NCT Dream - "Joy"

NCT Dream was the first sub-unit to release holiday singles. The song debuted as part of the SM Station digital music project in its second season.

Members include: Mark, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Chenle and Jisung.

Jaemin was still on medical hiatus.

The festive holiday song was described as a "more mature form" for the teenage group with a "bright and cheerful atmosphere." It is a reinterpretation of "Joy to the World," and several other Christmas songs.

NCT U -"Timeless (텐데...) "

Date: January 12, 2018

This R&B piano ballad featured in the second season of SM Station. This vocally driven song featured the main vocalists from NCT 127. It was described as "an emotional ballad with a lyrical piano melody with sad vocals about dreaming of a reunion with a loved one."

Members include: 127 main vocalists Taeil, Doyoung and Jaehyun.

The song was also performed by these three members in their pre-debut days as part of the SM Rookies group (video is in the spoiler.)

The song was also re-released on the NCT all-unit project and album, NCT 2018 Empathy.

NCT / NCT U - "Radio Romance"

Date: January 30, 2018

This is a very traditional OST-style pop song.

Members include: 127 main vocalists Taeil and Doyoung.

The song was featured on the first OST for the drama Radio Romance and described as a medium-tempo rock song with a "healing nature and mature vocals" that reflects the "drama's goal to use radio as a medium to bring a more analog feeling to a digital world."
