I. Introduction
Jay Park is a rapper, singer-songwriter, record producer, dancer, and entrepreneur. He is a member of b-boy crew Art of Movement (AOM), and the founder and CEO of hip hop labels AOMG and H1ghr Music.
He was also a former member of the boy group 2PM.
II. Career
Jay Park auditioned for JYP around his hometown Edmonds, Washington. He did very well, which gave him a contract to be a part of a boy group as an idol. He went to South Korea in 2005 to train in dancing, rapping, singing, and learning Korean.
Jay Park's first entertainment appearance was through Mnet's show Hot Blood Men. A documentary reality program that showed the members of "One Day" (which is both 2AM and 2PM). Jay Park received the most fan votes from this show, which won him the leader spot of 2PM.
2PM debuted with their mini album Hottest Time of the day on August 29, 2008.
Outside of his work with 2PM, he made the song Jeong with Yeeun of Wonder Girls for the OST of the TV drama Conspiracy in the Court. He also did special stage performances like Navi's Heart Damage on May 3, 2009 and K. Will's One Drop per Second on June 20, 2009. Jay Park was also a regular cast member in some variety shows like Star King and Introducing a Star's Friend. He and Kara's Nicole Jung were also hosts for the cultural variety show Nodaji.
On September 4, 2009, unfavorable comments about Korea were discovered on Jay Park's Myspace account from around 2005. These comments were translated from English to Korean and became widely covered by Korean media. Jay Park put out an apology. Despite the active attacks from detractors, JYP's CEO Park Jin-young announced that he would still stay in 2PM as a member. However, the next Jay Park posted a message on his official fancafe that he would leave the group to allow the situation to settle, and return back to his hometown Seattle, Washington. He apologized to the other 2PM members, and promised to return as "a better person". Park Jin-young stated later that 2PM would return to activities as a six-member group. Due to the high tension behind Jay Park's leave, the 2PM members took a break from variety show appearances. Jay Park's vocals were not removed from the older 2PM songs, but he was no longer featured on newer releases from that point onward.
The 2PM members payed homage to Jay Park's absence through the title of their first album 1:59PM and their acceptance speeches for end-of-year award shows for Again & Again by thanking Jay Park and wishing for his return. At Mnet Asian Music Awards, for their performance of Again & Again, a spotlight was shown over his normal position where he would dance.
After he returned to the U.S, the public opinion changed when it was revealed that his Myspace messages were very mistranslated and taken out of context. During his time at Seattle, he participated in b-boy battles with Art of Movement members. Jay Parks contract with JYP was terminated on February 25 stated in was because of a "personal mistake" he made in 2009. The termination had the approval of the remaining six 2PM members, which started fan boycotts of 2PM endorsed products.
Jay Park launched his own personal YouTube channel on March 15, 2010 as jayparkaom. He uploaded a version of Nothin' on You after its' creation. The video gain immense popularity very quickly with over 2,000,000 views in under 24 hours. In Korea, the original version by B.o.B and Bruno Mars reached the peark of the Cyworld music chart hours after the video's release. B.o.B released a new version of Nothin' on You which featured Jay Park in liu of Bruno Mar's vocals on June 15, 2018.
Jay Park and the other Art of Movement members attended Project Korea III: KSA Cinderella Story at Rutgers University New Jersey on April 3 with Ailee anc Clara C. Videos of Jay Park bein an MC and dancing to Beyoncé's Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) gained viral attention.
Ned Sherman, CEO of Digital Media Wire, became Jay Park's legal resprentive on May 28, 2010. They worked on projects such as the movie deal for Hype Nation.
Jay Park went back to Korea for the first time on June 18 to film Hype Nation. His return was met with much interest on social media.
He signed a contract with SidusHQ for his domestic Korean activities (singing and acting). He released his EP Count n Me on July 13. The EP had English and Korean lyrics written by Jay Park himself.
Jay Park started working with AOM member Cha cha Malone, and released Bestie and the duet Speechless. He also collaborated with other rappers Dok2 and The Quiettl.
He was titled as the most searched solo singer of the year by Naver.
On January 6, 2011, Jay Park won the Best Web Video category for Nothin' on You at the Mashable Awards. He released his first Korean mini-album Take a Deeper Look on April 27, 2011. It debuted at #26 on Billboard Heatseekers Album Chart and #3 on Billboard World Album Charts. He also performed for the first time in years on Korean music shows like Music Bank, M! Countdown, Music Core, and Inkigayo. He won on Music Bank on May 6 (which marks him as the first artist who won at a debut stage) and later on May 13.
On August 6, he participated for the first time on KBS Immortal Songs 2. He performed Candy by H.O.T with Moon Hee-joon. He went on to make a few more performances on the show.
Jay Park won the Disk Bonsang for Take a Deeper Look on January 11, 2012. He later received the Popular Artist Award of the Asia Model Awards on January 18. Jay Park released his first Korean studio album New Breed on February 7. It reached #1 twice on the Gaon Weekly album chart and #1 on Hanteo Weekly chart with more than 80,000 copies sold in 10 days. It also debuted at #4 on Billboard World Album Charts and #16 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums Chart. He promoted the Asian version release and visited Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Japan.
He had his first solo concert New Breed Live in Seoul on March 3 at the Olympic Hall of Seoul Olympic Park.
On May 16, Jay Park dropped his first mixtape Fresh a!r. Breathe !t. It was certified Gold by Datpiff within a month of release because it was downloaded over 100,000 times. He became the first Asian artist to achieve this.
On August 22, Park was revealed as a fixed panel member on MBC's Comte to Play with Kim Eung-soo and Kwon Oh-joong as a new corner on the show Trueman Show, but the show was abruptly canceled several months later.
On February 6, 2013, Jay Park was revealed to be entering the cast for Saturday Night Live Korea. He founded his hip hop label AOMG this year as well. Jay Park was later a judge on Mnet's rap competition program Show Me the Money 4 in 2015.
Jay Park joined Jay-Z's Roc Nation label on July 20, 2017. Making him the first ever Asian American on the label. He later replaced Melanie C and Vanness Wu as a judge for the second season of Asia's Got Talent.
He started record label H1ghr Music with Cha Cha Malone with the goal to bring both Seattle and South Korean talent to the hip hop scene. Jay Park became the first non-chinese guest judge on the fourth season of The Rap China, which aired on August 14, 2020. The guesting received mixed feelings.
