FOR THIS NEW SERIES OF THREADS, I WILL APPRECIATE THE THING THAT SHOULD BE THE MOST TALKED ABOUT BUT IT ISN'T, MUSIC ITSELF.
#2 Structure and Genre-Mix(Continued from #1)
There is another song by KPOP group, EXO which breaks the typical song structure rule by going to lengths no one in KPOP has ever gone and incorporates various genres in a single 3:45 minute song.
The song starts with rich synths and Chen's blazing voice. The song follows four-on-the-floor rhythm which is typically associated with disco and electronic music (Genre #1), with heavy R&B and funk touch ( Genre #2, #3 ), Hip hop influence (Genre #4) and ending the song with Acapella (I think Acapella is considered a genre so Genre #5).
I have never heard a song where it would have so much richness to it. Everything works perfectly well even the heavily EQ'd parts (Xiumin and Baekhyun).
The difference is perhaps the longest extended bridge I have heard in a while,
I mean you go from Chorus to half-time to a regular KPOP style bridge to a ACAPELLA section, who even thinks that? That's absolutely genius.
There is an interesting theory by Kevin and UMU from ReactToTheK (who are classical musicians) regarding the acapella section.
It's a must watch Reaction especially the way they break down the song after the reaction using that Felix Mendelsohn analogy.
This song has so many layers, it's so well produced and well sung. Definitely my favorite release of 2018. I hope they continue to make music as interesting or even more than this.
