TBH most idols really prolly are dumb and ignorant

  • We forget many of them didn’t even have proper high school education. When people ask can idols be THAT dumb…I always feel like saying..yeah. Yeah I actually do think so.

We want them to be aware of world history and culture and basic ability to think…but like…. It’s a tall expectation all things considered lol.

Do you think your favs are dumb?

  • is school really the end all be all of intelligence tho

lacking common sense/general life knowledge maybe, it's hard to develop when you have little agency over your own life for most of your late teen/early adult years.

Don’t underestimate basic HS education. Literacy is very important. The world is fighting for it.

It’s not the be all end all. It’s not gonna help you succeed of itself. But basic HS education is certainly an important part of anyone’s life and you certainly learn a lot.

  • What is this about? Anyway what I’ve noticed is having textbook knowledge doesn’t correlate with being smart to know what to say/do or even give you that kind experience only living give you… there’s no way to know unless you actually get to witness how them react to situations

No we keep saying why are they so ignorant or do stupid things. I can believe they really are stupid.

i'm sure most idols know how to read/write/do basic math... lacking knowledge okay, but again to me that does not correlate to intelligence and i find it an unfair conclusion to call someone dumb based on their education level.

Not innate intelligence. That’s a separate thing I thought that was quite obvious. Things you learn in history class things you learn about other cultures opinions you hear about women… the things you study and debate and learn in an educational institution are important. Yeah people can be dumb in spite of that. But not having even the exposure can certainly be detrimental.

  • statistically speaking some of them are probably pretty dumb (and many have shown it too)

but everyone believes their faves are ofc well educated and gifted

  • I don't know BP personally, unfortunately,so I'm not exactly sure about how cultured they are :/ . I can see why some trainees can't study while being in an agency but at the same time luckily some of them keep studying in case their careers as idols fail so not all of them leave school, some of them even attend university and I really admire them because I can only imagine how difficult this can be.

Idols aren't just singers/dancers and speak to a wider audience now since a lot more people are interested in kpop (both really young people and adults) agencies should at least teach idols how to keep up with the latest news and some basic knowledge, because it's damaging to only focus on music and dance at a really young age. Training sistema should really change....

  • Some are not so clever, some are pretty clever, such as people.

Such as kpop fans that like to act all clever and intelligent and woke but only understand one/their own narrative. ^^

  • Don't most idols have to pass the CSAT to graduate high school? :pepestare:

I doubt they are illiterate. They may be tone deaf to the issues non-celebrities face, but that's usually the case to anyone who has grown up rich or in the public eye.

  • School is not a measure of intelligence in the slightest.

As far as being ''cultured'' goes, simply learning about world history and culture is not enough to prevent insensitive behavior and outright discrimination.

Even places like the US that place great emphasis on these topics still have severe issues with racism,anti-semitism etc.,let alone any other place.

Ofc that's no excuse for idols to be ignorant and they should be called out and get educated, but calling them ''illiterate'' because of is bit of a stretch to me.

  • most of them are street smart since they go through the dubious "training system " of the companies

tbh i dont think the exposure to education would help them to learn about cultures, women's rights etc since the average korean man who has completed his education also holds similar views

    This doesn't negate the fact.

if 9/10 ppl are dumb without education only 6/10 maybe with education. It doesn't mean everyone is gonna be spectacularly woke with education.

  • People are really arguing whether HS education is necessary are completely missing the point.

You are more likely to be ignorant without education than with it. This is not up for debate for me the fact that people are genuinely typing out those replies baffles me.

The existence of stupidity regardless of education doesn't negate the importance of education.

  • My colleague is an engineer and he once told the cleaning lady at the office that she must have brought it upon herself when she talked about her husband abusing her :pepepizza:

Some people are just right assholes no matter how high their education is.

That being said, idols starting training at a very young age and therefore leaving school early definitely contributes to general ignorance and tone deafness. I have always found it so sad. Many of these idols start training when they're in middle school, some never even graduate high school and then spend between 10 to 15 years between training and working and most of them don't even make it beyond nugudom or make enough money to set their lives up. Then they're out on their bums with no money, no fame to get them a successful solo career and no other qualifications to get a well paying job.

  • While I do think most idols aren't the sharpest tools I don't really think lack of higher schooling is often the reason for them sometimes saying or doing stupid things. It can be the current environment or the type of people they hang out with.

Not knowing about big historical events or about your counties events can be lack of schooling but not knowing about other cultures or other countries history isn't always down to lack of education, often we simply aren't taught. I have very little to no knowledge about America history such as it's founding, civil war, civil rights and so on. The only time I was directly taught about America was their involvement during ww2. Everything else i picked up from media like movies.

Then you get into things like politics and prejudices, that stuff more than likely picked up when growing up by those around you. A young kid/idol who is constantly trying to get approval to debut or continue finding success is more than likely going to accept certain views just to appease others or fit in.

Plus of course I've seen educated people say dumb ass things too. One of my colleagues at work has a masters degree but we find out he had no idea how sound and light waves are different. He thought both worked by line of sight and never questioned how he could hear without his ears pointing directly at the source of sound or even how he could hear things though solid walls in another room. That's a basic ass thing we learn for science as kids. Of course we took every opportunity to make fun of him lmao, we would pretend to hear things he couldn't or ignore any actual sounds like a phone ringing.

Lack of proper education being a contributing factor to the general dumbness or ignorance is not a topic i thought would be something worthy of contradictory opinions but here we are :pepe-sad:

  • lol a potentially explosive topic but very clever. I'm jelly, i wish i had thought it up X( .

When i first got into Kpop, i thought most idols gave up on regular schooling and ended up with "tutors" provided by the label. But then i learned after watching Twice surprise Dahyun at her graduation that many idols continue to attend regular school while being part of the group. Later on i saw Somi graduating with Itzy members, Izone members going to school, etc. So maybe the majority, even the vast majority of idols, still attend and eventually graduate from regular high schools?

  • People are really arguing whether HS education is necessary are completely missing the point.

then you should change the op lol

you aren't talking about them being ignorant but being dumb or borderline illiterate - do they seem like they can't read or write to you???

many of them are very well spoken and smart , especially those who appear in variaty shows often, it's quite obvious

I'm not saying education isn't important , it really is, but if they have a few years less than others it doesn't automatically mean they're all dumb and borderline illiterate jeez

all of them finished elementary and middle school properly anyway

  • Yoshi started at an international secondary school and then transferred to a high school known for (jpop) idol alumni but didn't finish. However, he passed the Korean GED and likes to read books about psychology according to Junghwan.

Personally I think high school education is important but a lot of people around the world don't get quality education. So many people graduate high school without understanding how their government works, how their bodies work (food metabolism and reproductive health especially), and how to manage personal finances. I graduated high school as an honors student and my civics education sucked ass.

  • then you should change the op lol

ehh it's just a hyperbole and my OP and consequent responses are clear enough.

I thought it would be a topic where people would be like "haha yes idol dumb" and post some videos of idols being dumb or himbos but here we are :pepepizza:

  • ISaidISaid

Changed the title of the thread from “TBH most idols really prolly are dumb/borderline illiterate” to “TBH most idols really prolly are dumb and ignorant”.
  • I don't really think lack of higher schooling is often the reason for them sometimes saying or doing stupid things. It can be the current environment or the type of people they hang out with.

This is basically what I wanted to say except I absolutely suck at expressing myself.

  • Won't argue about that but this it's also on you and your clickbaity title and misleading op but whatever :dancer:

Tbh it wasn’t meant to be click bait I thought it was just funny and self explanatory. Didn’t know people took questioning idols intelligence in a general manner is something worth getting worked up about.

Even if I called them illiterate the way you understood it as it wouldn’t be something worth reacting to. So no the tile wasn’t click bait or misleading. Just people overreacting

  • Interesting point indeed! Education is valuable, but the real question is at what point does that education become redundant or specialized.

Personally, high school education for me was more so reinforcing material from middle school and doubling down for AP classes - building up that foundation. Obviously some forms of education is necessary depending on your field, such as Calculus and higher level Physics.

I’m assuming for idols, they get a basic gist of everything to be a functioning adult in society. However, that solely relies on their previous foundation of education.

Truly an interesting topic of discussion, thanks for bringing it up!!
