Does overall success doesn't matter in Kpop?

  • i have noticed that when a group starts having success immediately is compared to top groups that have been successful for years and their overall accolades are much bigger....

i have noticed this with almost every group...

  • im not sure who this is about specifically but honestly speaking there are top 3rd gen groups that do have much more career success than 2nd gen groups that were in those ranks in the past. if we're talking 4th gen compared to 3rd gen tho, then yeah, no one has career success thats more than the top 3rd gen groups yet. so.

    who's your favorite artist?

  • Overall success is what really matters, AKP fans focus too much on peaks over longevity.

There seems to be this mentality too that only top 1 matters. 2nd and 3rd is considering flopping...I'd argue top 5 and top 10 is still considered successful.
There are so many groups/soloist with one hit wonder songs that out charts everyone one time and then fail to translate that to success. It would be silly to argue they are more than another due to that.

Success should be measured by the sum all achievements

  • Depends on the discussion. If we’re talking about overall careers it matters if we’re talking about who is more trendy/popular at this moment then no.

Like Celine Dion has a bigger career and more overall success than say…Ariana Grande. But no one would say that Celine Dion is currently bigger and more relevant than Ariana Grande.

  • It's because a disturbingly large portion of the kpop community only cares about being #1 or being better than xyz or their groups having the bestest and brightest label possible.

This, is not like everyone mention S.E.S, Fink.L and Snsd in popularity discussions, even if their overall career is bigger than some currently popular groups.

is an example.... or EXO.... SNSD.. SEVENTEEN, BIGBANG

  • it matters in the future, like how snsd are still considered legends to this day.

Now, especially when they are active, not so much.

In this forum it has always been that ppl like to look at current korean rankings and think of who is on top. But soon as kpop become more and more globally focused Im pretty sure opinions will change and the 'Twice is declining', 'Twice not doing as well as others' motion will be gone

  • comparisons are important in any situation kpop or otherwise and if a group gains success of course they are going to be compared to the top groups because success breeds success but to know if a group is successful we need something to compare them by

for example: saying you scored 90% in a test might sound impressive until you add that the class average was 95% in which case the 90% is below average...

or selling 50K albums might sound not as impressive until you state the group previously sold 5K, 10K, 25K and the lastest album sold 50K...

everything has to be measured relatively

  • the new gen is coming into power, it's going to happen as 3rd gen groups come to close and 4th gen groups start rising. it doesn't diminish anyone's careers or make them flops, it's just the cycle of kpop.

a group has a huge hit, they skyrocket (or have a very slow rise but still reach the top eventually) they have a few years of unimaginable success, maybe a couple years of not so unimaginable success. new groups debut, interest shifts to what's shiny and new, old group slowly declines. new group then has a huge hit, etc etc etc etc.

comparisons are just kinda inevitable, but it's okay. don't worry too much op!

  • I think it depends

In the western world, Olivia Rodrigo dropped her first ever project this year & it's already in the top 25 most streamed projects of all time on Spotify, also by far the most streamed album of 2021

In K-pop the equivalent will be selling 1M albums with a debut project & simultaneously sending multiple songs to #1 on Gaon I suppose

The thing about AKP is that people always focus on the 'now'

Like who is the top groups or who is leading people always look at the now, and post stats or achievements from twitter like literally only few days ago.

Overall longevity and legacy matters more than your 'current success'

Not all groups make music even after their contracts are over. Like only those who are really passionate about music (which seems like those who really contribute a lot and write their music) are the ones that still continue making music. You need to make a name for yourself in the long run which takes years, rather than forever harping about what is happening now.

  • Nako is the product of Twice's legacy. She is our proud Once president.

  • this is right actually, having success in a consistent(even if it's slow) manner can allow a group to last long and release songs for years

it's like the opposite of the saying, easy come easy go, (hard come hard go???idk lol my english cmi) who cares what people on akp think anyway
