Non-Balkan folks, what do you guys know about the Balkans? And Slavs?

don't have any prejudices
I think most of people from Balkan peninsula are nice
but well you have problems in your own Yugo kingdom
too many people think that they are separate "nations"
then you have those small countries like Montenegro, Bosnia, Kosovo,
honestly in my opinion those should be just Voivodeships/Regions within one bigger country...
I'm from Poland - 4.6 million people live in my voivodeship which by land is similar size to Montenegro...

I don't know anything aside from what we had in history classes but I remember a few years ago I read somewhere something about how some of your people find it offensive when called balkan? Is that true? And why exactly?
Not sure because I don't mind it myself, probably because of weird prejudice against that term?
wow i didn`t expect anybody else to be from balkan on this forum lol
Pozdrav
Yes, I am from the former!

Peoole here fought for their freedoms too hard not to be recognized. They might be tiny but it makes sense that they are different countries.

I know more about historical fact than anything
-that it colonized for a long time by the ottoman empire, which would also kindap eldest children from native christian families to convert them to islam erase their identity and culture and force them to fight for the empire
-women would tatoo themselves and their children for protection (since tattoos made them too ugly for sex slavery and christian symbols protected them) or to affirm their idenity even if it got erased
- which created plenty of tensions in the regions even after they got independent leading to the balkans wars
- that the international intervention during the war was disliked because of the bombing
-and there is some cool cultural practices and the place has a lot of different cultures
-
and they make some really good artists and music

A lot of people don't know this but the word slave comes from the word Slav because we were enslaved so much historically.

ppl from former yugo countries don`t find it offensive at all lol.. i guess like somebody said some other countries from different areas do since they don`t feel like they are a balkan country
i`m from Slovenia and even tho we were in Yugoslavia sometimes we are considered balkan sometimes not, it`s mostly due to cultural differences i guess

Politics and political mess. Bosnia and herzegovina have 3 presidents (for each nation) who rotate every 8 months in a 4 year term. A mess is an understatement
-
that's just...
couldn't they be just region presidents or even city presidents
and have proper country president over them...?
it's strange as hell

It was the agreement that ended the war.
That way each side thinks they won and they share ownership.
It's a messed up shit. But war does that

If anyone wondered what kind of music ex-yugoslav gp (I'm excluding slovenia because I'm not familiar with them) plus bulgaria likes (azis is bulgarian, our languages are different) this is it

What Alex said, plus people of republika srpska don't feel B&H as their own country and their sportsmen always play in serbia national teams. Muslims from serbia often choose to play for B&H national teams.
Having one president would mean that all three nations would be able to ignore nation and religion (three nations and three religions) and that's not happening any time soon
When people on this forum say white people; well, here's your white people
