I'd say that's IU... IU is the only artist with more digital points than BTS in 2021. (also she has more physical sales than Brave Girls).

But based on data she's the closest competitor for BTS. She's the only one who does better than BTS at anything.
People are also forgetting that Justin Bieber has been more successful in Korea this year than any idol group besides BTS and Brave Girls. He's under a Korean company now, so he could get some awards

Nah, I am 10000% sure IU won't win Artist of the Year at MAMA. I don't know how familiar you are with award show, but throughout their entire history, MAMA never gave Artist of the Year Daesang to a soloist (except for that one time with GDragon).

They had the biggest breakthrough. However, this award is not about that. It's about impact (BTS), popularity (BTS), sales (BTS). The only thing that's not 100% sure BTS are the judges but they also love BTS.

the largest and most organized fandom - which translates into physical sales and voting, will win any awards with those two parameters.
Kind of like political elections, the most organized party with largest number of adherents will win.
But the question is should music awards be like politics?
Is it fandoms that are candidates?
Anyway awards haven't adapted well to constantly evolving social dynamics.
we all know it's already sealed because of online voting and sales...
most of the awards lost any sense because they are mostly based on online voting + sales
and then if the group which has a big fanbase and amazing sales will also chart great then it's done
also, they should create a new category 'KPOP English song of the year' for all those songs catered for US/UK audience with full eng lyrics, and don't count this song in song of the year category

I think its more she doesnt release music that often and also doesnt match most of the criterias needed too actually win, except for mma and gda.
Then theres the timing with releases, love poem ep in 2019 wasnt even eligible for mma 2020 because november apparantly doesnt count for their award shows (not sure if they still skip november releases? it is/was dumb) .
In 2018 she only released bbibbi in october and was busy with concerts when most of the awards took place, same was true for 2019, and 2020 was with all the corona stuff.
GDA this year. afaik was all pre-recorded, for mama and mma i think she also did pre-recorded thank speeches for whatever she won there.

The title doesn't sit right with me. "give BTS" like it wouldn't be earned and they didn't fulfil the criteria. Hmm.
Anyway other groups have improved this year and that's great but if another artist dominates in 10 years time consistently for 6 years or however long it's been according to the award show criteria, then they for sure will deserve it each year. No?

Mnet is notorious for giving rookie of the year to its own groups lol (whether or not they deserve it is debatable lol)
