SONGS ARE GETTING SHORTER...

Genuinely asking,
What does streaming have to do with it
-
-
Nah, it's nothing new. K-pop is just going the grindcore route. For the moment they have nothing on Napalm Death and its world record of the shortest song (1.316 seconds long).

Shorter song -> more streams per unit of time -> more money (and bigger numbers)

If I've just released a single, though, this only benefits me if people are inclined to repeat the song over and over, right? Which is unusual behaviour.
On an album, I can see the financial incentive of, like, making an album full of very short songs, for sure tho.
But then I'd probably do that anyway, I love those kinds of albums.

YG noting this idea as we speak...

Time for streaming sites to count by listening time not by number of streams.

But with Kpop its an added advantage that fans will definitely have streaming sessions and also the competition is high so will intrun make the fans stream even if the songs are absolute mediocre...

Imagine if this song was just one second longer.

One of my biggest complaints for sure. Songs literally cant breathe anymore.
I understand why Kpop keeps the songs short, it's hard af to put out interesting choreo for 3 minutes, let alone 4 or 5, shit could get boring real fast for the audience. Also much easier to dance for 3 minute intervals rather than 4 or 5 minutes, like in a concert.
But in general songs have gotten so short that they seem just like commercials and ads for the group. There was a time when pop music wasnt like this, it was about real musicality. I have so many favorite songs in the 5-10 minute range, here is just one example of one of the best power ballads of all time.

yall are acting like boomers lmao. short songs have been a thing since forever. listening to old songs, specially from 60s, i noticed the songs are like super short less than three minutes long some even less than two but i suppose at that time it was because of radio, now is about streaming.
the problem is not about a songs length but its quality, many current songs just feel unfinished

Coincidentely, its video is same length as a Motown-era classic I was introduced to. The difference is one song has more flavor than the other:
Stevie Wonder - I Was Made To Love Her (2:37)

Songs were short back in the day too though. Back in the 50s-60s, most songs were 3 minutes or less, presumably so radio stations could fit in more songs. I don't think longer songs came into fashion until rock really took hold and songs became more experimental (and meant to be listened to while you were high as a kite).
Some of the most beloved songs of all time are under 3 minutes. Yesterday, Respect, Ain't No Mountain High Enough, I Saw the Light, Ring of Fire, Tutti Frutti, Maybellene... all under 3 and many under 2:30.

Edit: Oh, I didn’t see that others were already mentioning that.
