Individual idols more popular among international fandoms vs Korean fandoms?

  • Who are some member of groups that are more popular among international fans than Korean fans? Which individual/group of countries seem to like a member more than other countries? Note that international means anywhere outside of Korea. Based mostly on my observations, I have a few (correct me if I'm wrong):

f(x): Victoria has China, Amber has the West (pre-JK News incident), Sulli has Korea and the rest of Asian countries, similar situation to Sulli for Krystal (except she seems to have a decent fandom among Western and Chinese fans as well). Luna is less popular everywhere but Western fans seem to like her more

SNSD: Taeyeon is popular everywhere. YoonA is mostly popular in Asia (especially Korea and China). Ex-member Jessica has a significant fandom among SONEs in China and parts of the west, etc. Hyoyeon seems to the most popular in European SONEs

Big Bang: Daesung seems to be more popular among Japanese fans than anywhere. G-Dragon is still most popular in most places and seems to be popular in China, based on what I've heard and the fact that I saw a lot of Chinese-speaking people at his concert in the USA back in 2017. Taeyang does have a sizable fandom in the USA but probably less than GD given that Taeyang's concert (same area, same year) occurred at ~3,000 person venue (sold out) while GD had a ~11,000 person venue with 9,000 in attendance

  • I 100% agree with what you said about BIGBANG especially since Daesung sold out his solo concert in Japan.

I think SKZ might be more known internationally rather than in Korea. iKON also seems have a lot of IFans rather than Kfans. This only based on what I see and feel. Correct me anytime Stays and iKonics if I'm wrong :pepeflushed:

I meant to ask which individual members/idols are more popular among K-fans vs I-fans and popularity in different countries. How is the situation like in the groups you mentioned (if you know)?

Sorry, I don't know about individual idols especially in this new-gen. For both groups I always look that they are trending on social media that indicate more on Ifans since Kchart is always used as the measurement for their popularity domestically. I'm sure how SKZ recently release charting in Kchart, but their result looks better in the internationally based results.

Maybe, BP's Lisa?? Since I have seen much hype and story about her in international outlets rather than in Korea?

  • Probably A.C.E

As they toured around the globe 2 times in a row they decided to hold 1 (!) concert in Korea and Jun said "I didn't even thought that people would come, because nobody knows us in Korea". He was surprised that about 1K people came. Besides that they won some random awards the most other recognotion they got was only international as for example they ranked in the top 200 global charts on Billboard and it was said that one of their songs would've been the 9th most importaint KPop-song of 2020. You wouldn't have heard stuff like this if you would ask inside Korea if they know them.

    A.C.E | ATEEZ | DRIPPIN| MCND | NU'EST | ONF | SF9 | Stray Kids | TFN

Changed the title of the thread from “Idols more popular among international fandoms vs Korean fandoms?” to “Individual idols more popular among international fandoms vs Korean fandoms?”.
  • Probably those that are from other countries and/or those who also speak other languages fluently. Lisa, Rose, I.M., BamBam, Mark, Jackson, Felix to name a few.

  • No one in Twice except Jihyo has such stark difference in popularity between inside and outside Korea. (We all remembered the iconic era in which her fancam outviewed everyone in Twice)

Nayeon is still popular internationally probably just as much as in Korea but in Japan and China, probably still behind other more popular members

Whereas Mina has much bigger fanfare in China and Japan than in Korea

Momo while having more popularity in Korea than Mina, still has significantly bigger fanbase in Japan than inside Korea

  • individual idols have their different roots and qualities that might be more conducive to gaining fans from a particular demographic.

Jackson Wang, and Wang Yiren both first caught my eye because they are chinese -- I'm a Chinese American.

I'd imagine Minnie from g-idle and Lisa from BP have lots of fans in Thailand and among overseas Thai, for example.

Not just by race either-- Dancers from different disciplines can appreciate stars that also have some great skills too, again Lisa has insane skill while dancing and lots of reactions videos to her lilifilm dances come from former or current dancers as well.

Chungha and AleXa both have stirred a bit in Latin music because of their experience and pieces that go for that demographic

(Chungha did live in texas, and released Demente with Guaynaa with impeccable pronounciation<< according to comments )

(AleXa lived in oklahoma, and covered Tusa also with impeccable pronounciation<< that's also according to the comment section, idk spanish)

    {they solos though so idk if that applies here.}

  • I think that Lisa and Hyoyeon are more popular among international fans than Korean fans.

Not sure if there's a structure behind the differences of ifans' and Kfans' favorites.

Maybe ifans, especially western fans, like the idols that have a 'swag' vibe more, while Kfans like other types more, like those that do well in Korean variety shows, or that adhere to Korean visual standards, or that are sweet/cute/charming? :whatb:

I would say that is the case most of the time. In f(x) for example, Amber (popular among western fans) had more of a 'swag' vibe while Krystal and Sulli (both popular among Korean fans) adhered to Korean visual standards. Additionally, Sulli was also known to be the 'cute' member and was treated as the maknae despite being older than f(x)'s real maknae (Krystal) by a few months.

  • I can only measure chinese fandoms as they document very well how many albums they are buying

And maybe Korea based on digital charting of solo releases, but even then it's depends on the song, for instance both Chen, DO and Suho songs charted better than Baekhyun solos, yet Baekhyun can sell much more albums even if we ignore chinese fandom buying

No idea how people are measuring popularity outside China and Korea
