Usually they are described as 4th gen, because they recieved rookie awards with those that debuted in 2018 (and are considered as 4th gen), since their debut was in december of 2017.
But that's a never-ending debate woth different interpretations, I don't care much about which generation they belong to, but I describe them as 4th gen, since this is how most people interpret it. Not that it matters much.

I just find it weird to consider a 2017 group as 4th gen when 2018 is already on the line (they feel more like 3.5 than 4th). 2012-2016/early 2017 as 3rd gen is a way to small time for a kpop generation when previous ones were 9/10 years but like you said it doesn't really matter.

I don't know, most people consider them as such, because of the reason I stated earlier. You can consider them as 3.5 if you feel like it.
