Overall 2 skip songs for me but I enjoy the rest a lot^^

  • Nice review Rain.

  • Love Me Right

A sparkling piece of lite r&b funk that starts the album off so well.

    Tender Love

One of the weaker tracks to me. This is the type of throwaway bside that happens on every 90s r&b album. I often appreciate the retro throwback quality of EXO’s r&b stylings and that while they can remind me of a specific era, they can still feel classic and engaging, but this one to me feels dated. One of the skips on this album for me.

    Call Me Baby

This is the flip side of what I was just talking about. This is clearly 90s New Jack r&b nirvana (and not surprising because of Teddy Riley) but this is a gorgeous classic that never gets old. From Kyungsoo’s goosebumps-raising “baby girl” to the harmonies to the vocal flex as the music drops to high ad libs to the E-X-O, I love the hell out of this song.

    Transformer

This song still feels like it could drop into the market and be current, combining a darker, bass-driven beat iced with EXO harmonies. It really highlights that EXO does not only do one style. I’ve really fallen more into this song lately.

    What If

This is a quintessential r&b slow jam, delivered to perfection, especially Baek’s aching notes at the end.

    My Answer

I’m not against this type of r&b ballad (NCT’s “Make Your Day” is this same sort of piano-driven emotional r&b ballad and I LOVE it - it is one of my all-time faves), but this is another skip for me. I think it’s missing the power I’d expect on the close or more emotion throughout.

    Exodus

A more dramatic jazzy song with standout moments - I like the dramatic flourishes and the way it’s pointing towards the fact that EXO is not afraid to experiment with their sound.

    El Dorado

I always say this: I admire this technically - production and vocals are amazing. And again, shows they can do anything, tackling a bombastic rock opera type piece. But I don’t actually like this song. 🤷🏽‍♀️

    Playboy

Gorgeous and sultry and teasingly playful, this is EXO showing they can give you all sides of r&b. This is straight up grown folks music, and that “my baby” snatches my wig every time. And that little jazzy riff at the end. Stahp.

    First Love

This is another one that feels very 90s r&b b-side - I don’t dislike it, but I’m not terribly attached to it.

    Hurt

Another one that can feel a smidge dated but I’m not mad at it - I like this vibe, including the fast, cascading vocals and the change up on the chorus. Unlike First Love, I don’t skip it.

    Lady Luck

A great mid tempo power track - this has so many elements I love about EXO songs, tempo and shift changes, power vocals and a solid r&b groove. I don’t really need the horny female vocal but I get it in terms of the style they’re working in.

    Beautiful

I enjoy a great r&b slow jam but I’m not a big fan of ballads. Again, technically great as always, but I’m not a fan of this one at all. It’s a little too earnest and cheesy for me.

    Promise

I’ve commented before that rap is not EXO’s forte, but this is one of their better rap performances. Now that I’m listening with a critical ear, I think I like this song more for what it’s about and represents than liking the actual song...although there are some great vocal moments on it.

Going through this song by song has actually been a revelation for me. I always say “oh I love that album, it’s so great,” but realizing I have quite a few skips here.

  • It was a great read. Thanks for the review.

I wish Hurt by EXO was remastered. It's so good, Maybe the mixing quality could have been improved now.
