Is this the most damaging encore stage in K-Pop history?

It’s not the worse encore stage but I’m Ngl as soon I saw the title this popped into my head the backlash was crazy

Somehow they sound better in this encore than on studio version of This is For

There’s been worse encore stages but Twice is a popular group and this happened during the high of their careers so the backlash would be greater by default!

They also had 3 or 4 back to back bad encore stages during M&M which kept the backlash ongoing but there has been worse encore stages and a lot from bgs!

Not the worst encore in terms of singing, but the reaction was deffo the worst I've ever seen. The lashings they got FAR outweighed the singing quality.

From memory I think there was some kind of Twice hate group still active around that time and it only got busted and disbanded well over a year AFTER this. I also think the timing made it worse. Don't forget, them was covid times, people were bored at home with nothing else better to do so any scandals blew up way worse.

The encore was just the fulcrum. The slave room was in operation, so the backlash was not organically generated. But yes, no group has ever been so damaged by a single stage for such a long period of time. Curiously only in Korea though, where... the slave room was in effect.

Personally I think twice was just in a downward trajectory regardless of this scandal.

Their music was uninspiring and they leaned into a more western sound later on their careers. Imo Korea didn’t really like the shift in their sound rather saying it was about the encore

If only they can bring those vocals and those energy and excitement to their stages

In short, the first thing people do in a hate train is dig up more material to support the thing they're hating on. Twice and LSF had too much old, current and future material that people could turn to to support the idea that they couldn't sing. It's about 4-5 performances for LSF and at least a dozen that did Twice in, not 1

If LSF does get over it, it's because they handled it way better than Twice did afterwards despite their scandal being way bigger

It's interesting, isn't it? This was 5 years into their career, they'd probably done at least 50 encores by this point. Sang live plenty of times (their roulette wheel songs at their concerts have no backtrack at all iirc). Sang live on the radio with no backtrack... Often got praised for that. But apparently at least a dozen of these performances were bad, but nobody noticed, and then suddenly everybody noticed all at once. Like retroactively noticed! Fascinating stuff, real strange phenomena.

Maybe I wasn't paying attention, but I didn't remember the past being dredged up at all, I just recall this and one more encore a little later being used to characterise their entire history. And to also characterise the other JYPE groups like Itzy and Stray Kids (nobody came for Day 6 because Icy was insane even then). But maybe I'm remembering it wrong. I'm sure there's some 2015-2020 vocal fail compilation out there somewhere.

I'm more sympathetic to the idea that they were on the way out in Korea anyway, but it can't have been the western shift to their sound, right? Because they stayed dominant in Japan and across SEA. To this day, they continue to do well everywhere except Korea. The disparity is visible not just in streams but in touring. Is Korea uniquely averse to more westernised music? Genuine question.

I mean yeah aren’t they? Very few western acts make it there and like the generally popular western acts like say Taylor Swift or some others don’t even chart it’s usually only very particular western artists they care about.

Anyway look at BTS, Jimin’s encore never ruined them. And not only that he continues to be one of the most popular members in SoKor. Now we can argue that they are a BG with a fandom but imo the bigger point is twice probably never had a big Korean fandom unlike some others who can fuck up and still thrive.

Combination of Twice not having a big fandom along with their changing sound that stopped appealing to Koreans was probably the real nail in the coffin.

This is in contrast to worldwide imo where they do indeed have a large “fandom”. A fandom that will support them regardless of their skill level or fuck ups.
